I have picked up a few gifts to give people next year. Nothing special, just the reduced homeware and such.

DH thinks I'm being a tight grinch 😅 I probably am, but I have a big family and lots of people to buy for and it stresses me out. He has 3 to buy for and I have 12 (adults and children) so he doesn't 'get' it.

am I being a grinch getting stuff now intended for next years Christmas?
I thought it was more money savvy but he thinks I'm stingy and I'm surfing the fun out of gift giving.

I must admit, I had fun and I still picked things I think people will like (silly card game for the ones who like them, an apron for the one who bakes etc, candles for the one who like candles) I'm just saving about 70% of the money and I don't have to panic next year!

anyone else do it or would you be offended

We have a present cupboard which we add to all throughout the year so that any bargains can be added and used for birthdays, Christmas or thank you’s etc.

Its especially handy for pet presents (our own pets) as pet coats and collars and leads can be expensive when full price!

Moonlightsonatas · 31/12/2022 19:20

I wouldn’t buy toiletries or candles, as they will likely deteriorate over the year, definitely not Lush as they are packaged loose within the box (and will have a prepared on date which will show you bought them the year before).

One of the PP has a good idea buying nice knitwear items or sleepwear, but those are a bit more personal.

TulipsfromAmsterdam · 31/12/2022 19:43

I have bought pj's, slippers and clothes for next Christmas already. I have a lot of people to buy for so hoping to be better organised this year.
I need to try and keep it up though cos find i feel enthusiastic straight after Christmas but as the year goes on I forget and it's usual November/December rushed shopping.

ShornTheSheeep · 31/12/2022 19:55

Op you couldn't sound more like a journo if you tried 😀

JellyTeapot · 31/12/2022 19:55

I think it's fine as long as you're buying things because you have someone in mind, rather than just buying things because they're cheap. One of my dm's friends does this and most of what she sends my dc ends up being donated. It feels so ungrateful but my house is only so big.

CorpusCallosum · 31/12/2022 20:00

Whenever I buy presents in advance I end up losing them and/or buying more in December anyway 🙊

sweatyshower · 31/12/2022 13:20

Just the same stuff I've bought this year last year and what I'd be getting next year.

well put it this way, if you were to say buy me a toiletry gift set in the sales, chances are id be pissed off as each range is different every year
a set of PJs probably not

Yoyooo · 31/12/2022 20:10

I don't think it's stingy but I find these sort of presents are very generic without much thought to them? I find things like candles or smellies annoying as I have to find a home for them and it creates more clutter.

limitededitionbarbie · 31/12/2022 20:46

No I always do it.

I just my daughter these little keepsake charms that I will put away for a big birthday

Be a lovely gift when she's older

InfinityOrUndefined · 31/12/2022 20:49

I only buy crackers or so. This year I only bought LUSH bath bombs from sales. They are for dd to enjoy straight away. I buy presents throughout the year from Amazon prime days and Black Friday. We have enough Xmas tat and might buy some decorations from Xmas markets etc

CrapBucket · 31/12/2022 13:46

Its a half way house of saving money. Better still just agree not to do presents with people, saves all the money, and wastefulness. Christmas is a bit of a merry go round of socks, candles and toiletries if you aren't careful. Often in wasteful packaging.

This. How many of the presents are really necessary? The only adults I buy for are my parents and husband

Verbena17 · 31/12/2022 21:01

100% savvy!

MegaClutterSlut · 01/01/2023 15:50

I buy throughout the year, most in the sales and bootsales but just things as and when I see things people will like. I managed to get down the bootsales for Xmas just gone, dd a BAB jack skellington bear for £4 that's currently £44 on their website which she loves. It really does take the stress out of it imo to shop all year round if you can afford too.

I normally buy things like pjs, got mum some nighties and dd fluffy socks. Also got dd a sew your own grinch and a light up tree gonk reduced to 1.25 for her stocking. ds a boxer short set from boohoo and Xmas pjs reduced to £2 in primark.

MrsMontyD · 01/01/2023 17:17

I don't tend to buy toiletries gift sets and those sorts of things that places like Boots sell off in January anyway. Even if I did have someone to buy something like that for I'd be conscious of it being obviously last year's if they're a fan of say Soap and Glory they would know it's not current stock next year.

Buying gifts sets and things cheap in the sales for use I have done. Sets with a shower product or a hand cream or whatever that we use regularly I've bought and had some good bargains.

Wexone · 01/01/2023 17:43

if it suits you to do it rock on. for me no. I only buy Xmas cards wrapping paper etc in the sales for next year. we do kris kindle in both sides of families abd only give money or vouchers to nieces and newphews. if go to people house buy flowers wine or something small we know they like. if anyone gives me pyjamas dressing gowns or duvet sets they go straight to charity. I am particular about bedding due to allergies aswell as nightware and dint wear dressing gowns. if I see toiletre sets reduced I buy them for myself

mac1974 · 01/01/2023 17:49

I always buy from the boots sale for my DDs stocking. Especially my eldest as she's quite into cosmetics now. I've also ordered some lovely Xmas mug & coaster sets from portmerian, Xmas pjs and Xmas crackers. I won't do anymore until October time now.

BlastedPimples · 01/01/2023 18:03

It's a wise move to buy in the sales if you have the spare cash to do so.

BadgerLovesMash · 01/01/2023 18:44

I've bought some stuff in the sales ready for next year.

I got some lush bath bombs (for Easter instead of an egg and some for dd2s birthday in June). I've got an airtight plastic tub to keep them in.

Stocked up on Christmas novelty earrings, socks and headbands 75% off in claires. Got some cute earrings, fluffy socks, drinks bottle, hair Clips, beanie boo teddy all 5 for £10 in claires.

Miniso had themed Christmas craft bits heavily reduced. I picked up jewellery set, paint your own canvas, colour in decoration, sticker pack, tree decoration, banner pack. All between 23p and 60p each. Pin badges for £2.

Primark I got a princess shower cap, gel eye mask and reusuable cleansing pads for £1 each. I got dd1 some stranger things tshirts reduced to £6 for her birthday.

Accessorize a tree decoration for their stocking each for £2.12. Scarves for my mum and mil reduced from £20 to £5.70.

Guiness world records 2023 for dd birthday for £3.

Nothing main gift wise but all those little bits that quickly add up.

I got 75% off money wallets, wrapping paper and gift boxes in card factory and poundland.

I've got a big plastic tub that I've stored my presents in and put in the loft so I know where it is. And all written on my gift list app so I can keep track of what I've bought and how much I've spent.

lovescats3 · 02/01/2023 19:04

It's a great idea ,I normally do it but haven't been able to get to the sales this year

Cococomellon · 02/01/2023 19:15

What kinds of items is it?

I have a few family members who are bargain hunters and I know not one item they buy is full price. It's obvious.

Also depending on what it is, if it's something the other people will recognise, then they may know eg boots gifts or brand Christmas items.

You don't have to buy full price and you don't have to give gifts at all but personally I think it is a bit stingy to hold onto things for a year for the sake of saving a few £££

catsnthat · 02/01/2023 19:16

Blimey, my mil, sil and best friend do all their shopping for the year in the sales! My friend has a present box full of random sale -shite- stuff and it's just a lucky dip what you might get for your bday or Xmas 😂

Athenen0ctua · 02/01/2023 20:00

If people are getting things at a discount, are you buying the same things as you would at full price or buying more but spending the same? I wouldn't want to look like I'd spent over budget and put pressure on family to match that.

Cococomellon · 02/01/2023 20:14

@Athenen0ctua this is a good point. One of my relatives who discount shops buys quite a few items, clearly discounted imho, for what it might have cost for one item full price. I'd rather have one thing than loads of shite though.

LookingforMaryPoppins · 22/01/2023 21:30

I don't think there is anything wrong with this! I have bought Christmas PJ's in the sale for my husband and 3 children's Christmas Eve boxes - £10 a pair rather than £30! I also bought some stocking fillers (Christmas socks) and some decorations - Christmas garland type, reduced from @£90 yo @ £30.

Provided things don't go off and are the right size what's the issue🤷‍♀️

I do find that I forget what I have bought so end up buying too much though 🤦‍♀️
