I have picked up a few gifts to give people next year. Nothing special, just the reduced homeware and such.

DH thinks I'm being a tight grinch 😅 I probably am, but I have a big family and lots of people to buy for and it stresses me out. He has 3 to buy for and I have 12 (adults and children) so he doesn't 'get' it.

am I being a grinch getting stuff now intended for next years Christmas?
I thought it was more money savvy but he thinks I'm stingy and I'm surfing the fun out of gift giving.

I must admit, I had fun and I still picked things I think people will like (silly card game for the ones who like them, an apron for the one who bakes etc, candles for the one who like candles) I'm just saving about 70% of the money and I don't have to panic next year!

anyone else do it or would you be offended

Lush products have a short shelf life. I tried to use some bath bombs a year after I received them and they’re discoloured and gone a bit crumbly.

Look at the Amazon feedback on their cheap Bomb Cosmetics bundles. They’re obviously old stock and look awful!!

MrBlobbyWasTrulyAwful · 31/12/2022 15:00

I do this every year, instead of being stingy I see it of being able to buy more than I would otherwise be able to. It’s all about more bang per buck.

WithIcePlease · 31/12/2022 15:02

Yes it's fine
Got some fab stuff in January sales for DD's in the past

MrsT84 · 31/12/2022 15:02

I tend to do this more for Birthdays than for Christmas. I make a note of Birthdays coming up in the next 6 months and keep an eye out for gifts in the Christmas sales. As long as its nothing too festive, it means my family at friends get something nice for their Birthday. I would forget where I had put stuff if I bought for next December. It's my mums Birthday today, and everything I have got for her was half price or less. She wouldn't mind though and would be pleased with me for getting a bargain!

Reugny · 31/12/2022 15:08

It's fine but just be aware shops/online retailers now have random sales throughout the year.

StrawberryWater · 31/12/2022 15:40

I bought something for oh today (a book), it’s fine.

UWhatNow · 31/12/2022 15:43

Silly card game is not really a present - more of a sticking filler.
Person into baking will probably have an apron.
People into candles like to buy their own candles unless it’s particularly posh.

Yeah you wasted money.

Xmasbaby11 · 31/12/2022 15:49

I think it's OK for bits and pieces but not big items which are too much of a gamble a year ahead.

I'd be wary of things like Lush that won't last, also any clothing items, no chance of returning them

I'm a baker and I hate it when people buy me aprons. I already have a good one that I chose, and now I have 3 spares. I just gave 2 to charity shops.

I have bought some nice cards that were half price, as I know my taste in Xmas cards isn't going to change! Apart from that, it feels a bit depressing to start shopping before this Xmas is even finished! There are sales throughout the year and I am not sure the Jan sales are so much better than those.

labazslovesliving · 31/12/2022 16:27

I buy throughout the year call me mean but during the car boot sale i pick up great gift sets jewellery etc new in packet unopened for pennies

thriftyhen · 31/12/2022 17:06

@labazslovesliving This is exactly what I do! Car boots are full of new, unwanted gifts.

PurpleEmpress · 31/12/2022 17:24

Usually get a couple of packs of Christmas cards. I was told once it is bad luck but so be it still get them. I have one friend I usually meet up with the new year so always get her Christmas present in the sales.

I bought 6 presents for next Christmas in the boots boxing day sale and 1 from LUSH 🤷‍♀️

Wouldn't be pissed off normally but would be by the LUSH gift being bought in a sale

LUSH are fresh cosmetics and most of their products only stay their best for 3 months top. They wouldn't be great by next Xmas ><

On the whole though buying in the sale is great, I have just bought my daughters Xmas clothes for next year at a massive discount so very happy about that

Vicliz24 · 31/12/2022 17:30

I always buy things in the sale for next year just be aware I work in retail and every single year we have multiple people returning things that now have no value whatsoever on our till system so we do spend a lot of time explaining that sorry but Auntie/ Mum / Granny bought it in January. It can be disappointing to realise that fact .

DelurkingAJ · 31/12/2022 17:33

We moved house late this year and I was very put out as this meant I couldn’t buy stocking fillers from about August onwards. I would never buy a main present this early but little bits (I did once have to produce the Xmas PJs in the middle of the year when DS1 grew rapidly and suddenly had none, but they weren’t Xmas themed just perfect for him and Father Xmas always brings PJs!).

Bagzzz · 31/12/2022 17:36

I wouldn’t be offended unless it meant I needed to use the item quickly. Also worry about the adults no presents or here is an Amazon list around Sept or Oct.

TangoAcid · 31/12/2022 17:37

I don't think it's stingy if you buy stuff that is nice/won't date/good quality. My in laws do this and we always end up with left over tat/dated stuff from NEXT & Tu every year that ends up in the charity bag come January.

SparkyBlue · 31/12/2022 17:38

Not a bit stingy. It's practical. Actually sil gave some lovely gifts this year and was extra generous and I suspect this is what she did. I've bought some gorgeous hats/scarf/gloves sets that were crazy prices originally at the for DC in the sales to put away for next year. Also tights for DD for next winter and other bits in the next size up.

Squiblet · 31/12/2022 17:39

Seems risky to me - how do you know the recipients ' tastes or needs won't have changed?

Thinking of last December, neither my DP not my DCs were into the stuff they're into now. So anything I might have bought a year in advance would have been a waste of money.

Sparkletastic · 31/12/2022 17:44

I wouldn't buy toiletries or candles as they will be either OOD or losing their scent if kept for a year. Ok if you buy generic household type gifts I guess.

PhantomErik · 31/12/2022 17:51

I often do this.

Dressing gowns, duvet sets, pyjamas, slippers, blankets, decorations & jumpers given this year were all bought in the January sales.

Saves a lot of money & I like knowing my stash is growing.

Make sure you keep a note of what you've bought.

MarthaBlue · 31/12/2022 17:55

No not at all as long as stuff doesn't go off. I did once get a Bliss set that I knew had been out the previous year and not that year and when I went to use it the creams were all split and watery. I wasn't mad at all as it is the thought that counts and I assume it was stored somewhere very cold or hot!

Rightsraptor · 31/12/2022 18:01

Excellent plan. You do have to be a bit careful as toy trends will change, fashions will too but there are still loads of things you can safely buy now.

I usually get Christmas cards & decorations on sale after Christmas and random things for emergency presents.

Happy hunting.

thirdfiddle · 31/12/2022 18:02

Slightly jealous of you being so organised!
You're taking a risk of people's tastes changing or them asking for a particular thing. But good chance you'll both save money and be able to get things that would be over budget in December. Win win.

Psychonabike · 31/12/2022 19:13

I don't do a lot of gift buying in advance as I'd just forget or change my mind, but I do get the regular Xmas stuff in the Jan sales -Christmas family pyjamas, crackers etc.
