Aibu to buy gifts for next Christmas in this sale?

I have picked up a few gifts to give people next year. Nothing special, just the reduced homeware and such.

DH thinks I'm being a tight grinch 😅 I probably am, but I have a big family and lots of people to buy for and it stresses me out. He has 3 to buy for and I have 12 (adults and children) so he doesn't 'get' it.

am I being a grinch getting stuff now intended for next years Christmas?
I thought it was more money savvy but he thinks I'm stingy and I'm surfing the fun out of gift giving.

I must admit, I had fun and I still picked things I think people will like (silly card game for the ones who like them, an apron for the one who bakes etc, candles for the one who like candles) I'm just saving about 70% of the money and I don't have to panic next year!

anyone else do it or would you be offended

  • offended to know your approx £20 gift was actually £7 in last years sale?

I bought 6 presents for next Christmas in the boots boxing day sale and 1 from LUSH 🤷‍♀️

Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals · 31/12/2022 13:11

Absolutely wouldn’t mind at all!

JackieDaws · 31/12/2022 13:11

No one will know unless they return it or your husband blabs to shame you.

Theimpossiblegirl · 31/12/2022 13:13

Get yourself onto the Christmas bargain thread. You'll find your people.

Chocandcheese5 · 31/12/2022 13:14

I don't think it's stingy at all - some gifts (such as boots, next etc) are so overpriced imo anyway, why pay full price for something when you don't have to. The only reasons I don't do it earlier is because I don't have the space to store everything and because I enjoy buying gifts nearer the time, but it certainly doesn't make you stingy to buy them now.

romdowa · 31/12/2022 13:14

Sounds very sensible to me.

sweatyshower · 31/12/2022 13:16

What's a Christmas bargain thread? I want one? (elf)

:-O what have you got?
I looked at lush online, is it still worth a trip into town to go to the shop?

Any other shops I need?

(PS DH will be getting a severe talking to! he almost convinced me to return some!)

I wouldn't be offended at all to receive such a gift , i look for bargains all year round , i bought a gift today for my daughter for next christmas .
I buy from homesense, independent shops and websites for something you wouldn't find in every high street store.
Its a good feeling knowing you have a good stash of lovely gifts that have cost a fraction of the original price.

chipsandpeas · 31/12/2022 13:18

depends on what your buying imo

sweatyshower · 31/12/2022 13:19

it is a good feeling. I've always had the idea but never the space, now we've moved and I have and there's no reason to rush around paying extra in December ever again.

I buy all year round , so no issues but check the dates on Lush items ?
They may have a BB

Just the same stuff I've bought this year last year and what I'd be getting next year.

NoDairyNoProblem · 31/12/2022 13:21

I think it’s sensible.
I regularly pick up stocking fillers, decorations and pyjamas/slippers in the January sales.

The key is ensuring you buy the correct style/size etc. Unlike MIL who gave me summer pyjamas, two sizes too small with the tags removed, for Christmas this year 🙄.

Ohnotheydidnt · 31/12/2022 13:22

I did this last year and 3 of the people I bought for passed away!

That's why from now on, I'm going to leave it until September and no earlier. 😭

Always4Brenner · 31/12/2022 13:24

You carry 0n I’m buying socks soon a couple 0f pairs wrapped up and put away for next Christmas. It’s fun to buy throughout the year. I’ll be doing my friends presents as well.

1stTimeMama · 31/12/2022 13:42

I only buy for my children, husband and parents, but I have every intention of buying in the sales, and throughout the year, and may even wrap as I buy! I'm determined to be more organised than ever before!

CrapBucket · 31/12/2022 13:46

Its a half way house of saving money. Better still just agree not to do presents with people, saves all the money, and wastefulness. Christmas is a bit of a merry go round of socks, candles and toiletries if you aren't careful. Often in wasteful packaging.

Prettypennies · 31/12/2022 13:51

I normally pick up nice bits in the Winter Emma Bridgewater sale, loads of bargains!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 31/12/2022 14:11

As long as everything will still be in date and usable I don’t see why anybody would have an issue with this. I would check the Lush products as some can degrade over time or have use be dates and they will tend to have the ‘made on’ date so it may be obvious it was from last years sale (or look like a regift) but I think it would be fine with card games and candles etc.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 31/12/2022 14:13

I’d avoid buying anything they might try to exchange, like clothing, as you can’t give a gift receipt. Non perishables, knock yourself out.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 31/12/2022 14:14

I’m jealous, not been able to get to the shops myself, I would absolutely buy Christmas presents for next year, I do it as much as I can in the Christmas sales. Nothing grinch about it at all, my DCs would not get the gifts they get if I bought everything all at once just before Christmas, they and others get what they get because I spread the cost through the year and bargain hunt in the sales.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 31/12/2022 14:29

Won't the stuff from Lush be past its expiry date if you buy now?

OP, you aren't being stingy, you're being practical.

Athenen0ctua · 31/12/2022 14:33

Too early. You don't know who might ask in October to do no presents, a spend limit, only buy for children etc. Or who might really want a more expensive present that several people would pool together for.

AxolotlEars · 31/12/2022 14:42

The first thing I do after Christmas is look for presents for next Christmas. Buying this end of the year is financially savvy. I am careful about what I buy. Have come to the point where all presents I am buying are really a token as opposed to providing for needs/wants with the exception of my kids.
