Next year I'm going to ponce like my life depends on it

I have a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old, came down with covid just before Xmas and have had a lot of other stuff on, so this year I was pleased just to get presents and dinner done.

Next year I have ambitions to ponce like I've never ponced before. The kids should be somewhat easier ages for it. That's what I'm telling myself, anyway.

Can I see photos of your best Christmas pouncing from this year? Fancy tables, DIY wreaths, elaborate cakes, magazine-worthy wrapping, tastefully perfect trees (the decorations have gradually migrated to the top of mine as every time the baby takes one off we put in back on higher). I want to live vicariously through you.

The descriptions in online dictionaries I've seen are

'pretentious or affected'
'Intended to impress others, particularly in an excessively refined or ostentatious manner'
'Someone, something or somewhere which is overpriced, over styled, over rated, or thinks more highly of itself than it deserves.'

So exactly as OP meant it, a bit tongue in cheek but putting a bit more effort into making Christmas beautiful.

So many lovely photos on the thread.

Not mine, but PIL’s neighbours. This is reasonably typical for suburban Michigan and I fucking love it. A stroll around the sub of a Christmas Eve is a total joy. Living in a small terrace in London we’ll never replicate it but I so love to see all the festive effort here.

The standard of living is the US blows the UK out of the water. It’s like the dark ages here!

Right, as every house in the US looks like this and absolute none here do…….

gawditswindy · 26/12/2022 17:06

Well at least if everyone's house looks like that it's not as identifiable as a PP was concerned it would be.

crimsonpeak · 26/12/2022 17:08

What on earth is ‘poncing’?

CaramelizedNuts · 26/12/2022 17:15

Ponce off some one from around my way means taking advantage / freeloader.

I thought OP was saying she'd not do any work next year and ponce off every one else - much better idea that going to town with the decor!

Ps I think you are kidding yourself that it will be easier next year!! Give it -another 3 or 4 perhaps 😃

There is significant poverty in the USA. Plenty live very well but for those who don't it's far worse than here - it really is the dark ages.

Two GPs living and working in London can barely afford to buy a 3 bed family home. Two doctors in the USA would be living like kings. Same for nurses, lawyers, many other professions. You get properly paid for your time in the US.

I always understood it to be either a homophobic slur or living off a prostitutes earnings but apparent now it's showing off on a glamorous and glittery way.

London isn't the UK.

Can’t believe nobody remembers the mumsnet poncetastic Christmas threads - you need to thread search

It is absolutely NOT a handmade type Christmas

Its a classic, home interiors, snobby type Christmas.

NO TINsel
no “fun” wrapping paper
Classy drinks and food
Trees and decorations beautifully curated (some homemade)
Food and drink Waitrose/Ocadoesq

Ponce = poncey

slithytoveisascientist · 26/12/2022 22:07

I don't know if my tree or table are classed as poncey! I did refuse to have a bottle of HP
Sauce on the table and decanted it, but someone snuck a bottle of Shloer on 😂🎄

Bottle of HP absolutely not allowed if you’re poncing

slithytoveisascientist · 26/12/2022 22:53

@Durango that's why I decanted it into a ramekin with a teeny tiny spoon 😆
