Can I cook a whole beef joint in the slow cooker?

If so, do I need to do anything to it first or can I just put it in the slow cooker and leave it to its own devices? I often do gammon in there and just bung it in on its own, stick the lid on and leave to to cook for 6hrs. DH thought beef better for Xmas day (in addition to turkey) and now I'm doubting myself about what to do with it. I really don't want to be faffing about with having to brown it first or anything!

I do. Tastes better if you seal it in a pan first though

I just chuck mine straight in with plenty of water to make gravy later!

I just bung it in and check it after a night cooking gently. It doesn't need water.

Ok, that's reassuring as Google was suggesting it would be tough and dry if I don't do anything to it first. It's 2.7kg ... how long on high / low will it need?

Straight in, tiny bit of oil, lots of salt and black pepper, garlic and a hefty glug or 3 of red wine. It takes care of itsekf and 5 mins at end to finish off the gravy

Yes, I add red wine, a dollop of mustard, stock cube, cloves of garlic & seasoning. Set o low for 6 hours. Wonderful.
