Is my turkey too small? 🤔

Have just had the receipt from Tesco (all there bar 3 subs, but each for a different brand of the same item so all good).

Could only order a medium turkey, size range 4.5 to 6kg. Put in noted as big as poss please.

The one coming is 4.6kg.

We will have 14 people, which includes 3 kids and one vegan. Plus two very large men and two very hungry late teens.

So I reckon on averaging at 12-13 people. Which a 6kg bird would do.

I'm not sure on 4.6kg though? Some online resources say that would do 10, others not?

Not sure whether to pop in somewhere else today and try for a bigger one and reject the small Tesco one or just wing it and hope for the best? 😬

It'll be plenty for Xmas day, I suppose it depends how important boxing day sandwiches are to you?

If you're really worried maybe buy a joint of ham to go along side.

StopGo · 22/12/2022 10:01

Too small, sorry.

VestaTilley · 22/12/2022 10:06

Are you doing a ham? If yes, plus lots of stuffing, pigs in blankets and other trimmings it should be fine.

Remember to serve the legs and turn the bird over after carving - lots of meat on the underside

Cucumberbund · 22/12/2022 10:15

I would say that's fine especially if you are doing a ham as well. I am doing a turkey crown of 1.4kg for 4 people and a ham as well. We'll have enough for dinner again next day. It says on the turkey packaging serves 6-8 which it will.

mondaytosunday · 22/12/2022 10:18

I'd say too small. Add another meat (like a ham as suggested). Those 'large men' and teenagers eat about three to four servings each as supermarket serving sizes can be stingy. Or get a crown.

PaperDoves · 22/12/2022 10:19

@Cucumberbund I think we might have the same turkey crown, ours is also 1.4 and says serves 6-8. I was skeptical but when it arrived it was much bigger than I expected! With lots of sides it will be more than enough.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 22/12/2022 10:19

This is why I always grab some pork or ham instead to pad out everyone's meat portions! I'd nip to M&S and grab a crown or something. They had hundreds in on Tuesday.

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/12/2022 10:21

I think it’s too small I’m afraid

GoldenCagedBird · 22/12/2022 10:21

Too small. Get a crown as well.

or freeze and find a bigger bird

greenacrylicpaint · 22/12/2022 10:22

too small as sole sourse of 'main' meat.

tbh I would get a chicken in addition or another crown. possibly a ham.

ouch321 · 22/12/2022 10:37

Put a gammon in your slow cooker.

IhearyouClemFandango · 22/12/2022 10:42

Thanks all, have grabbed a crown as well as haven't done ham etc. Have got lots of sides too so 🤞

I doubt anyone will go hungry. I find the meat to be the least important thing on the plate. Plenty of potatoes, parsnips and stuffing will fill them up. Plus if you dish up, they get what you give them!

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 22/12/2022 11:03

It’s good you got a crown, there is no way that bird would do more than about 5 or 6 people.

im guessing some folks must just give very thin slices of turkey if they can make that size of bird feed that many people.

Benjispruce4 · 22/12/2022 11:10

Ah you’re well catered now op. Good shout about using the slow cooker though @ouch321 .
