How much can postmen receive in tips? Any rules?

We have a regular postman who is lovely. We get a lot of post, so see him a lot. We would like to give him a Christmas tip especially with the impact of strikes on his pay.

What amount of tip is acceptable? Is there any rules in terms of a max they can accept?

Was thinking £30-50. Can he accept it??

I can’t answer your question tbh but I have seen people leave out a box with drinks and snacks for all delivery people (royal mail, dpd, yodel, Evri and Amazon etc) to help themselves too and thought it was a lovely idea

I usually stick a tenner in an envelope for them but there is always the risk it won't be your regular one who gets it at this time of year, we are rarely at home when she delivers so have to leave it outside.

I think there's a good chance we won't see any posties again before Christmas, we've only had mail delivered once in the last fortnight, so I went to the delivery office this morning, picked up all our mail and left a box of biscuits for them all instead.

Managed to catch ours the other day and gave him a tenner. I don't think there's any limit on tips.

My DH is a postal worker. Gifts and cash are very much happily received. His average cash tip is £10-20. He's lost a lot of money during the strikes so customer appreciation really boosts his morale. People have given him wine, biscuits and chocolates too.

£10 here. That sounds an awful lot!

custardbear · 21/12/2022 09:19

Max £10 I'd say ... I'm struggling to cope with all the extra spend! 6 teachers/TA, work staff, cleaners, tonnes of family ... maybe I'm a grinch! 😉

£20 here. Lovely postman who’s been coming for ages.

My whole street did a whip round last year and it was £350

mondaytosunday · 21/12/2022 09:59

When I had a regular postwoman and got regular post I gave her £10 in a card.
Now a postie is a rare sight indeed and the mail service here is pathetic (SW London, and it has been like this for a few years I've been told). So no tip.
If you have a really good one then £20, but I think that's generous.

We give our postie £50. He's an absolute superstar and has been our regular for years, we missed him terribly when they changed the rounds during Covid.

hiredandsqueak · 21/12/2022 10:22

We have two regulars who do the round together. I gave them £10 each, they said they pool all tips and share between the two of them. They do a great service around here and I'm always happy to tip them as we have regular parcel deliveries. I gave the regular Evri person a tub of chocolates as she is reliable too.
