Cannot work out for the life of me why Winter Wonderland is so popular

I’ve never been before and my DS and his friends asked me to to take them this weekend, didn’t really know what to expect but I didn’t expect it just to be a huge version of a funfair you’d get in any local town anywhere and that’s it really.

We went on a couple of rides, queued for ages, bought some overpriced food, queued again for ages and DS wanted to win a teddy, tried but obvs didn’t (although at least no queue so there’s that).

I mean more fool me for paying for any of this crap but it was so overcrowded and didn’t even look that Christmassy. Maybe I’m missing something or maybe it’s just a huge pile overpriced, overhyped shite and I’ll go to crappy funfair up the road from me next time . 😉

We went a few years ago and it was pretty underwhelming!

Winter Wonderland is a total rip off we took our dd when she was small and said never again
over priced rides with long queues and once on the ride it’s over in seconds
They never used to charge for entry this is new and last week the bunjee type ride snapped one of the cables totally came away

I know that this can happen at any fair thankfully the people on it weren’t killed

I’m not convinced that the bungee cable
should ever snap on any fairground ride anywhere. Regular maintenance checks and such like should mean that the cable is never in any danger of snapping.

I absolutely agree it’s frightening to think of what could have happened
tbh I’ve never liked fun fairs there has been accidents at various theme parks
my dd is 16 and loves the high scary rides kids don’t see the dangers

I hated it. Nasty event.

@MassiveSalad22 Ah enjoy lovely Copenhagen- !! We moved back to uk in May and I really miss gorgeous Tivoli, lovely Xmas markets, the snowy beach at Amager strand and the joy that is Magasin department store this time of year.

Ohhh was thinking how could we wangle a move there… 😄 we landed home this afternoon and instantly noticed how miserable we brits are - just hearing couples talk to each other and staff talk to customers just so grumpy and missing the chill helpful Danes!. Boo. Instant holiday blues!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 20/12/2022 16:17

I see it in the distance when I get off the bus in Park Lane - I've always thought it just looks like a funfair, and I don't like funfairs. Love Christmas though! I've never had anyone tell me that they love it 😂

Ineedtocleanmywoodenblinds · 20/12/2022 17:05

I think if I was a teen with my friends without parents and a pocket full of cash I’d probably love it. Sadly none of the above applies to me 😉

i went a few years ago and it was horrible - really grimy, nasty food, tacky stalls. I think the problem is that the uk does not have a tradition of Christmas markers so trying to recreate then just doesn’t work.

Motorcycleemptyness · 20/12/2022 20:25

Winter wonderland in Hyde Park is hell on earth. A depressing muddy shit hole, and so rammed you can barely move. The thought of it gives me anxiety.

That said, not sure why PP are on about Tivoli in Copenhagen because that is also a tacky dump.

Can't be worse than the so called Birmingham Christmas market, dear God, that was awful.

I avoid like the plague not that I do birmingham much now find it too exhausting.

Ineedtocleanmywoodenblinds · 20/12/2022 21:52

Is Tivoli tacky too then?

The circus is always absolutely amazing. Same for the winter wonderland ice sculpture. Both are always breathtaking.

We have been 4-5 times but this was first year back after a 3 year break. You used to get some really nice craft stuff there eg one year we bought a beautiful wool scarf from somewhere up north of England and i got a pair of glove which were perfect for DS with SN but that i have never seen since. The food also used to be varied, interesting and decent quality nit the cheapest but a real highlight non the less.

This year it was just the same stuff on repeat, both food and goods, And really poor quality. No real non alcoholic options (like mulled apple juice) which was rubbish as I was on antibiotics. The bought ride vouchers were a disaster as we arrived later than usual and I have never seen queues like it

I'm not sure what we'll do next year, It just isnt Christmas without winter wonderland. I suspect we'll go for the circus and ice wonderland still but eat and shop elsewhere
