What do you do Boxing Day?

Boxing Day as a child was always spent with my Dad and that side of the family. No contact with Dad now and I have husband and kids of my own.

Past few years we have spent Boxing Day with DH's family, this year they've said we will see them 'over Christmas' at some point ( Christmas Day spent with my mom & step dad )

Which has left me thinking what shall me, DH and two children do Boxing Day? Don't fancy the sales, I'm thinking a big walk with the dog ( weather dependant ) and then do us a buffet tea late afternoon.

What do you all do?

We usually see family we didn’t see Christmas Day. This year we are going to the football as it happens to land on a home game. Normally do a big walk as well, can’t be bothered with sales as just spent enough on Christmas

FartOutLoudDay · 19/12/2022 11:34

Nothing, it’s absolutely glorious. Other than walking the dog we don’t leave the house, eat leftovers all day, start the Christmas puzzle, watch football and films and play games and crack open the tin of Roses. It’s my favourite day of the Christmas period.

NuffSaidSam · 19/12/2022 11:36

Lounge around at home.
Watch TV.
Actually get a chance to properly look at/play with presents.
Family board game.
Pick at leftovers/buffet food.
A walk/trip to the park at some point if the kids are young and need the fresh air.

i love all the days of christmas for different reasons

Xmas eve for all the anticipation
Xmas day for the roast dinner and the presents and the family fun

But boxing day is more relaxed - i do a buffet but other than that it is eating and drinking and board games and films. We have a dog now so that will factor in with a walk.

gogohmm · 19/12/2022 11:59

Leftovers, games, drinks, and walk the dog - some years been for a quick dip in the sea!

Giggorata · 19/12/2022 12:01

We have a cold poached salmon with leftover cold meats and salad, as a respite from the huge and heavy Christmas dinner.

We always go on a long walk with the dogs, either beach or woods.

That's about it, really.

DelorisVC · 19/12/2022 12:01

We wake up late and eat things like pigs in blankets and chocolate for breakfast.
We go for a walk then watch a football match with friends.
Home for more food and booze whilst playing games, napping and watching Christmas specials on TV.

TabithaTittlemouse · 19/12/2022 12:02

Usually eat and drink lots but I’m working this year.

bettbburg · 19/12/2022 12:04

Take the tree down and get the house back to normal.

Mommabear20 · 19/12/2022 12:13

We go to in laws house and do presents with them.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 19/12/2022 12:22

Same as Christmas Day but more of a cold buffet, movies food, drink

LindaEllen · 19/12/2022 12:25

Absolutely nothing! Used to visit family when I was a child but don't do that anymore as my family have all fallen out with each other.. joy.

But instead me and DP will sit and watch movies and eat chocolate and leftovers. Bliss.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 19/12/2022 12:26

After spending Christmas with family, Boxing Day is just me and teen DD at home chilling and we absolutely love it. We eat tonnes of leftovers, catch up on all the Christmas tv we’ve missed, have long baths using all our new products then get into new pyjamas and probably an afternoon nap. It’s perfect!

CoffeandTiaMaria · 19/12/2022 12:29

Head for the nearest beach with flasks of tomato soup, coffee and cooked onions and sausages. Have a great walk, blow away the cobwebs and have a picnic with hotdogs.
My favourite bit of Christmas!

maddiemookins16mum · 19/12/2022 12:44

Tidying up, bubble and squeak and try to go out to the cinema or panto. We also make sure we have a walk somewhere and the pub.

CornishGem1975 · 19/12/2022 12:51

Divorced, so we alternate Christmas. This year it's my turn to have them Boxing Day.

BestIsWest · 19/12/2022 12:55

My favourite day of the year. We do nothing but eat leftovers and chocolate , play with our new gadgets and games, read our new books.

Even better this year, there is a new feature length Detectorists on - I can’t wait for that.

Ramble0n · 19/12/2022 12:57

Boxing day buffet with anyone who wants to dropping in for a sausage roll and all the cheese and crackers.

MoonahSton · 19/12/2022 13:10

I'd absolutely love to do nothing but we always have to go to my PIL every year.

Since DH's niece was born (she's nearly 13) my SIL has steadfastly refused to see anyone on Christmas Day, she never invites us or her parents and will not accept any invitations anywhere else. Which is fine, she's not obligated to but then DH gets the emotional blackmail from PIL about them spending Christmas alone, we're hosting them this year which we're happy to do but it would be nice if she'd invite them for Christmas occasionally. The years we see my family on Christmas Day, DH never enjoys himself because he's made to feel guilty about "abandoning" (their word) his parents. I wouldn't mind but the rest of the year they make it SO obvious that SIL is their favourite.
SIL will go to PIL's house on Boxing Day and we get the emotional blackmail again ("we'd just like the family together once - we don't ask for much") if we don't go.
I just want to sit in my pyjamas, eating cheese and quality street, watching films and drinking loads of wine on Boxing Day.
It'll never happen. 🙁

MrsMontyD · 19/12/2022 13:11

DD will be with her Dad's family, hasn't seen him since spring so that should be interesting.

It'll just be me and DP, might go to for pub at lunchtime, otherwise it'll be leftovers and telly. We're eating out Christmas Day, so I might roast a chicken on Boxing Day.

2000lightyearsaway123 · 19/12/2022 13:14

Nice leisurely walk with the dogs in the morning, relaxed afternoon (planning a harry potter marathon) and then Christmas dinner 2.0 using leftovers.

thismeansnothing · 19/12/2022 13:14

Work

The benefits of being divorced, I've been able to reclaim Christmas.

DD will spend some time, usually Boxing Day, with her Dad's family but otherwise we have no obligations to be anywhere. ExH's family are very demanding and would still have me there all Christmas if I didn't stand my ground.

CanIusethisnameplease · 19/12/2022 13:22

This year my bestie and kids and her mum are coming over for a buffet nibbles and gift giving. A silly game and a dog walk .

just for a few hours of chaos, then relaxing!

Womencanlift · 19/12/2022 13:53

Spend it with my dad and step mum. Luckily we have always had that set up since we were kids, never did the alternate Christmas Day thing which I am very glad about

They tend to have a buffet rather than full Christmas dinner again and us kids (including my half siblings) just tend to spend the day playing silly games and making cocktails while my dad is trying to watch some football game in the background

My siblings partners will tend to pop in at some point but my partner will be with his family in Wales while I am in Scotland. We meet back again at our place just before New Year
