What do you do Boxing Day?

Boxing Day as a child was always spent with my Dad and that side of the family. No contact with Dad now and I have husband and kids of my own.

Past few years we have spent Boxing Day with DH's family, this year they've said we will see them 'over Christmas' at some point ( Christmas Day spent with my mom & step dad )

Which has left me thinking what shall me, DH and two children do Boxing Day? Don't fancy the sales, I'm thinking a big walk with the dog ( weather dependant ) and then do us a buffet tea late afternoon.

What do you all do?

Growing up we sometimes did an open house on Boxing Day, with a buffet and people dropping in throughout the day. I liked that. Other years we would go for a countryside walk, also liked that.

Usually we just do nothing, eat leftovers and relax. Last year we went to MIL's and had a second Christmas and we're doing that again this year.

Tdcp · 19/12/2022 14:01

I'm not doing anything apart from eat, drink, play games and inevitably build some Lego :)

Theoldwoman · 19/12/2022 14:04

Boxing Day is my most favourite day of the year!

Watch Cricket all day
Pack up the Christmas tree
Big clean up
Afternoon nap
Eat leftovers
Read
Usually walk the dog but she’s been diagnosed with kennel cough today so on rest.

dottiedodah · 19/12/2022 14:07

My Nan always used to say"This is where my holiday really begins!" and take advantage of the fact she could put her feet up! I havent cooked Christmas Dinner for a few years now,but still enjoy the "rest" Long walk with dog, watch TV eat celebrations and cold turkey buffet.

FatOaf · 19/12/2022 14:18

Get up late. Have stupendous lunch of leftover cold meat, bubble & squeak, baked beans and pickles. Read books/watch DVDs received as Christmas presents. My favourite day of the year.

RosieLemonadeAndSugar · 19/12/2022 14:35

All of your plans sound lovely.

I was worried we would need to 'do' something. I think as we're out majority of the day Christmas Day, Boxing day at home will be welcomed by us all!

Watch football normally, either live if it's a home game or on the TV if not.
However it's DD first Christmas so things are different this year. We will be at my partners parents. Thankfully the football is an away game so I don't have to try to work that out, will follow it on my phone instead.

mondaytosunday · 19/12/2022 14:40

Relatives of mine always go to the races! Can be very cold but exciting!
We will just walk dogs and laze - I'm cooking a nice lunch (ham) for us as my son has to leave mid afternoon as he's working the next day. I use it as a day to recover, and tidy up as inevitably there's stuff left over from day before.

familyissues12345 · 19/12/2022 14:48

We usually see DH's side of the family. Until Covid we all met at one of the family members houses, exchanged gifts and had a little buffet, really lovely.

We sadly lost FIL to bastard Covid so things have been different since. This year as the children are all now older teens we've decided to go out for a meal. Really looking forward to it, and nice that someone doesn't have to host!

glasshole · 19/12/2022 14:49

We have a huge open house/party on Boxing Day. Anybody and everybody is welcome from 2pm. Tons of food, lots of drinks and it's great fun. We have my DH work mates dropping in, family, friends, kids friends. Probably about 40 people over 6-8 hours.

Head for the nearest beach with flasks of tomato soup, coffee and cooked onions and sausages. Have a great walk, blow away the cobwebs and have a picnic with hotdogs.
My favourite bit of Christmas!

Oh that sounds lovely

ReneBumsWombats · 19/12/2022 14:58

Make bubble and squeak (I deliberately overcook so I can do this the next day), watch more TV and refuse to leave the house. My family are always banging on about going for a walk...it's wet and cold, middle of winter, you go have your walk. I'm staying home with wine and mince pies. And I'll make you bubble and squeak.

hattie43 · 19/12/2022 15:08

Pretty much the same as everyone else . Long dog walk on the beach or woods . Home to new PJ's , Xmas telly , Lego , puzzles , leftovers, picky bits and chops washed down with something lovely .

hattie43 · 19/12/2022 15:11

Chocs

ivykaty44 · 19/12/2022 15:13

I shall be driving to see my eldest dd and dgs op north, family time - probably row and play games along with eating. The. Trafford centre the following day before coming home

what happens if they all turn up at the same time? Or do you tell different people different times to arrive?

Soccermumamir · 19/12/2022 15:15

We do what we want on Boxing Day. Usually get up late, stay in PJs, watch films, eat what we want and I love to watch the NBA later on 🙂

FartOutLoudDay · 19/12/2022 11:34

Nothing, it’s absolutely glorious. Other than walking the dog we don’t leave the house, eat leftovers all day, start the Christmas puzzle, watch football and films and play games and crack open the tin of Roses. It’s my favourite day of the Christmas period.

Mine too 😊 Xmas Eve and Xmas day are manic. Love Boxing Day. My dad kept saying that Xmas Day is for kids and Boxing Day is for adults. I totally get what he meant now lol

Stellaris22 · 19/12/2022 15:19

Boxing Day walk is our tradition, even better now we have a dog.

Babdoc · 19/12/2022 15:19

I’m in Perthshire with my adult DDs and one of their partners. If the weather is reasonable, we go up into the hills and have a nice walk in the forest, round a loch or up a waterfall. Food is a fancy lunch buffet of gourmet goodies, then, when we get home, an Indonesian style curry of leftover turkey, followed by handmade chocolate orange cheesecakes from the farmers’ market. And lots of wine and silly board games! Bliss.

thelobsterquadrille · 19/12/2022 15:33

Sleep in, take the dog for a walk, and spend the day on the sofa watching Christmas films and eating leftovers, maybe with a few board games thrown in for a good measure.

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 19/12/2022 15:39

Stay in PJs/comfy clothing and relax at home, watch TV and play board games with no visitors and do not leave the house to visit others
DS spends the day building the Lego sets he got for Christmas (so that there isn't any wrapping paper or other things getting in the way)

Totally brilliant day

Andsoforth · 19/12/2022 17:15

From the last forkful of dinner on Christmas Day until the morning of the 27th, I do not lift a finger. Dh takes care of the dishes and keeps my drinks topped up and the cups of tea coming. The dc go feral with screens and selection boxes. It’s my day.

EileenAdler · 19/12/2022 17:18

Visit family and friends.

QueenWenceslas · 19/12/2022 17:21

We’re going to the Panto in the afternoon (oh no we’re not) and then the in laws are coming round for nibbles in the evening.
