Is this a thing? Have your kids been invited to these every year?

No! Christmas parties tend to be organised by school, sports clubs and youth groups.

I think it would be quite awkward to have a private Christmas party. Do you buy the host a gift like a birthday present? Do kids walk in empty handed? Do you send them with a bottle of cola like the equivalent of an adult walking into a party with a bottle of wine?

I was put off the idea of doing a birthday party just before Christmas because of the uncertainty in numbers.

I wouldn't want my kids to socialise before Christmas any more than they absolutely have to due to all the hideous viruses they'd be bound to bring back for Christmas.

I'd assum there would be a santa giving each kid a present, not that the kids would have to give one. It's a Christmas party, not a birthday party.

My DC always had a party in the last week of school, last session of Brownies etc. It didn't involve Santa. They wore their own clothes & took a plate of food to share.
I also used to invite half a dozen or so of each DC's friends over for a Christmas themed play date with Christmas crafts, pin the nose on the snowman and so on.
