Last minute catering re-jig! Canapés?

Guest of honour is not well enough to stay for the main meal but is ok for nibbles.

So I’m going to add some canapés into the plan for the day. Any ideas for some that my fussy arsed children might eat too?

What sort of things DO they like normally?

SheWoreYellow · 17/12/2022 12:24

Anything which is kind of conservative. So not capers and goats cheese.

pigs in blankets

If you have smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on bite size circles of toast, you could leave the salmon off for the kids if needed.

Because of my picky eaters, I’m serving Melba toast with a selection of help-yourself toppings. Goats cheese, quince jelly, pate, whatever chutney I’m gifted, and probably some inoffensive mild cheddar for the dc.

Cheese and/or Marmite straws.

I've made the Stilton biscuits, spiced paneer, and the tiny Yorkshire Puddings (different fillings) from here and they were all very good. The grissini with pesto dip look simple and decent.

You need a cheese and pineapple hedgehog for the children!

Other ideas...
Devilled eggs
Ritz crackers are good for things like smoked salmon or crab pâté, liver or duck pâté, cream cheese, then add a garnish of olives, slice of fresh fig, etc
Bruschetta are easy to do, add salami, ham, cheese, cooked mushrooms etc
Cubes of frittata
Mini quiches

I had a Xmas party yesterday with kids and parents - nibbles that went down well:

  • homemade mini sausage and apple sauce rolls
  • salmon blinis with creme fraiche and lemon juice
  • pigs in blankets tossed in homemade honey mustard sauce
  • cheese and tomato pinwheels

Itsu also have a pretty good frozen range of gyoza and bao buns - easier if more expensive!
