Do you tip supermarket delivery drivers?

I have a delivery coming from Sainsbury’s on the 23rd. I was chatting with my friend tonight at a night out and she brought up lifting out some cash as she had to tip the Tesco driver for her big Christmas shop coming today . It’s not something I’ve ever done in the past. Does everyone else do this ?

I do. I give them £5 which they always seem to appreciate.

Brechdanjamcaws · 17/12/2022 00:23

When I worked for a supermarket it we weren’t allowed to accept tips/gifts from customers… misers!

WallaceinAnderland · 17/12/2022 00:26

No. I also don't tip cashiers in supermarkets, staff who stock the shelves or any other person doing their job which they are already paid to do.

No one tips me either when I work in the office and answer the phones. It's not necessary and I find it strange that some people want to do this. But if it makes you happy...

Themisthefacts · 17/12/2022 00:27

@ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear do you tip them week in week out or just Christmas. I never thought about this before. It didn’t occur to me to tip the butchers, Amazon etc when they deliver too.

@Brechdanjamcaws this is what my other friend said. She said in her workplace they can’t take money off customers . As they deliver to lots of elderly and vulnerable people it could be seen to be taking advantage. Best not to take anything she said so there is no comeback if you get accused of anything .

@WallaceinAnderland this is what I thought also. I’m not saying they don’t deserve a tip but it should also go to the person doing the picking as they are the one walking about the supermarket choosing it all .

Yes I do. Just the Christmas one. In with a card. Just trying to make someone happy/feel valued.

We also leave a present for the bin men and the postie and the Evri driver if we see him (just a selection box).

I understand they get paid a wage and not everyone along the supply chain gets something but I do sometimes hope the people receiving pay it forward in some way. I’m ok if they don’t.

AriettyHomily · 17/12/2022 00:34

No. I don't tip.

Shol · 17/12/2022 00:36

Only at Christmas when I tip Ocadoman, binmen, and postman.

QuietOne121 · 17/12/2022 00:38

Yeah I’ll be tipping a fiver for the Christmas delivery. It’s not much and even though I’m paying for the service they’re saving me a lot of time and stress by not having to go to the supermarket.

And it’s Christmas, nice to do something nice sometimes innit.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 17/12/2022 00:58

Only for big Christmas shop . A tenner .

Beenaboutabit · 17/12/2022 01:01

Yes. I live on 3rd floor and they carry it up. I appreciate that.

ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear · 17/12/2022 01:04

@Themisthefacts No, I only tip them for the big Christmas week shop. I was unsure whether they were allowed to accept it, but they always have.

Themisthefacts · 17/12/2022 02:04

Yes. We have a delivery coming on Christmas Eve & Mr Ocado will be getting a tip.

It's just a nice thing to do imo and Christmas Eve is my favourite day of the year so if I can help someone feel the same in some small way that's great.

We only do it at Christmas though Xmas Smile

mondaytosunday · 17/12/2022 02:10

No I've never tipped, and assumed they were not allowed to accept them - and I grew up in America where you tip everyone! This Christmas I'm having to collect anyway 😒.

Morestrangethings · 17/12/2022 02:11

No, not anymore. I used to but I no longer have any cash in the house, not even my wallet when I go out - it’s all done via cards, online banking etc... I think a lot of delivery people, taxi drivers etc would be receiving fewer tips than before the pandemic.

However, I don’t use the delivery companies whom I know pay shit ‘wages’.

On a hot day, (I live in Australia) I will make sure to offer a bottle of water to anyone who delivers something to me and I have to sign for it.
