Unusual chess presents (not novelties)

DS17 used to play chess as a kid and has got back into playing it in the common room at school recently, as well as online. Just wondered if there was anything chessy that might make a good smallish gift? He probably wouldn't sit and read a standard chess book from cover to cover- he's just playing for fun so no interest in learning loads of openings or whatever. Already has a set. Wouldn't want a normal item with a chess theme eg mug or tshirt.

It may be that no such thing exists but I don't know much about the world of chess so thought I would ask.

What about one of the clocks with a stop button? I don't know what they are for but they have them in the Queen's Gambit programme so they must be good!

Yep ds is getting a chess clock! But would be great to see any other ideas.

Maybe a checkers/draughts set?

like this?

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden it’s to ensure you both get equal share of a time limit.

OP, a practical gift might be a subscription to the chess.com app. the free content is good, but the paid for version unlocks lessons, opponents and analysis.

otherwise, a big bag of noisy, smelly crisps to crunch through when playing and a huge cup with a straw to slurp loudly from (both of these being a favoured distraction technique of my school chess club)

Thanks, all- have gone for the clock x
