Pantos of yesteryear

What childhood Pantos can you remember seeing? Mine are Aladdin (I think) with Terry Scott doing a striptease as the Panto dame when I was very little. Also remember seeing Cannon & Ball in Babes in the Wood. We had to shout "Rock on Tommy" every time they came on stage (which got a bit wearing towards the end!).

Honestly can't remember but I am off to see Beauty & the Beast Panto tonight

MammaWeasel · 13/12/2022 16:39

I have never seen a panto. I've performed in one but never watched.

Have fun @MajorCarolDanvers - any big celebs in it?

I went to one every year as a child. Can't remember specific titles just a lot of he's behind you! I used to love them.

We went with school to see Babes in the wood , absolutely loved it - loads of audience participation. It was sponsored by Cadburys so the actors would throw loads of roses and dairy milk from baskets . Must've been early 80's .

Can't remember a favourite show but Berwick Kaler (York's pantomime Dame) always used to throw Wagon Wheels into the audience at the end - had a good arm, they would get up to The Gods! That was 30+ years ago...

My 8 year old went to see it this week and Berwick is still throwing the Wagon Wheels! Pantos are Christmas magic and it's so nice that all the kids are still enjoying them!

I saw Dick Emery in something in the '70s, and Bernard Breslaw, Tommy Steele and Anita Harris in other ones. Would have been Manchester and Liverpool.

@ShadowKitty that's funny, you would think health and safety would have something to say about chucking wagon wheels about these days 😆

@NooNakedJacuzziness exactly what I thought but apparently the Wagon wheels are still flying!

I'm sure someone will come along and spoil the fun at some point...!

My childhood ones were York with Berwick Kaler too! Magnificent. My brother caught a wagon wheel once.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 13/12/2022 19:56

Off topic but I really fancy a wagon wheel now, haven't had one in years!

The amazing Stanley Baxter in Edinburgh!

We used to go every year. The best one I saw as a child had the Crankies in. It was at the Birmingham Hippodrome and was so funny I remember not being able to breathe properly from laughing so much.

A-list Fife celebrities but totally unknown outside Scotland. 2 out of 3 members of the cast of The Singing Kettle / Funbox.

I saw Su Pollard. Anneka Rice and Matthew Kelly in Aladdin in Manchester in the 80s. That was the only time we went into the city to see the panto, otherwise it was the local Am Dram production in our small town.
