We enjoy watching a lot of the bog standard Christmas classics- Its a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, Elf, The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, The Nativity, The Snowman etc.

But my absolute favourite is Beatrix Potter's The Tailor of Gloucester even though it's only 20mins and just watched via YouTube. It's so Christmassy and lovely and made me wonder if any one else has any less obvious gems? I also love 'Santa Claus The Movie' but couldn't decide if that fell into the bog standard or lesser watched category!

Bernard and the Genie - is worth digging out - a lesser known Richard Curtis film

I’ve never met anyone else who has ever heard of this film! I was begining to think I made it up! 🤣 such a great film. Can’t find it anywhere to watch though

my picks are:
uncle buck
the family stone
trading places

Needaholidaypronto · 07/12/2022 20:18

Jason & The Argonauts, no Christmas connection but can’t beat it with a box of quality street and the fire on

MakingNBaking · 07/12/2022 20:24

Clue.

"Flames, flames"

MenaiMna · 07/12/2022 20:26

Rare Exports, Iron Sky, Iron Sky the Coming Race. (Smart-arse young teen, too cool for Christmas movies)

EllieQ · 07/12/2022 20:27

While You Were Sleeping
Klaus (on Netflix) - though this may make you cry 😭
The Christmas Chronicles with Kurt Russell.

Aww I love the Tailor of Gloucester! My cat is named after Simpkin.

Hook is a really Christmassy film for me, no idea why. I guess they travel to London and it’s snowing when they get there?

DuckonaBike · 07/12/2022 20:33

Klaus is lovely EllieQ!

We love A Christmassy Ted as well.

We also have a Tailor of Gloucester tradition on Christmas Eve but I read it aloud from the book! (DC are teens but still listen).

Sallyh87 · 07/12/2022 20:33

All the call the mid wife Christmas Specials.

We always watch Bugsy Malone at Christmas. I do find it a bit weird and inappropriate these days but the music is brilliant.

I always associate Bugsy Malone with Christmas! It was my favourite as a child (and I have to admit I still love it now).

RaRaRaspoutine · 07/12/2022 20:35

What a lovely memory @Coxspurplepippin

The beautiful song used as the theme is so haunting.

I had completely forgotten that my DDad always insisted we watch this when it was on at Christmas! The skeleton scene makes me laugh now!

Needaholidaypronto · 07/12/2022 20:41

@giddyasakipper its such a classic 🤣

Christmas with the Kranks, The Night Before and the Christmas in Evergreen films (made for tv). Every year. Without fail.

Gremlins. Da da da da da da

We always have to same arguments. It is/it's not.

This makes me think of Christmas too- I love the 'special effects' of the Ray Harryhausen films-like the Voyage of Sinbad.

Also, growing up, Christmas was not Christmas without 'Zulu' being on the tv. Usually on the 30th of December (which happens to be my birthday Grin).

OrangePomander · 07/12/2022 20:50

Fantasia

And not exactly a film, but we do enjoy a Pingu marathon!

LostaraYil · 07/12/2022 20:52

Rare exports and Die Hard

LemonDrizzles · 07/12/2022 20:52

Go from 1999 is a Christmas movie.

Clue is brilliant! I'm due a watch. Thanks for reminding me.

FloresApparuerunt · 07/12/2022 20:58

An ancient Cosgrove Hall called 'The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship' - its perfect wintry viewing! Weird but very good!

MadeInChorley · 07/12/2022 21:20

We all sit down watch Arthur Christmas together on Christmas Eve in the afternoon. It’s the signal to relax with a glass of fizz and Christmas really starting. I’m also a fan of Trading Places (watched without kids. It’s really risqué but we watched it as under 10s I’m sure!).

Blackadder Christmas Carol we watched every year growing up on an old VHS tape recorded from the TV (fast-forwarded past Blackadder 3rd Series) and I can still recite it all. My rugby playing, hard drinking DF used to sob his heart out every Christmas Eve watching It’s A Wonderful Life.

If you’re Scottish, then old episodes of Scotch & Wry are absolute classics. We still howl at them.
