We enjoy watching a lot of the bog standard Christmas classics- Its a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, Elf, The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, The Nativity, The Snowman etc.

But my absolute favourite is Beatrix Potter's The Tailor of Gloucester even though it's only 20mins and just watched via YouTube. It's so Christmassy and lovely and made me wonder if any one else has any less obvious gems? I also love 'Santa Claus The Movie' but couldn't decide if that fell into the bog standard or lesser watched category!

All the nativity films - and now there are 4 of them, the last two are awful but so bad they are brilliant!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 07/12/2022 19:41

Final destination. Usually the second one but any of them will do.

They are family favourite films

Chimna · 07/12/2022 19:42

Always about a boy every boxing day.

I can thoroughly recommend the new Netflix film, your Christmas or mine.

Jailapeche · 07/12/2022 19:42

The Last Holiday, not to be confused with The Holiday. It's a gorgeous uplifting film starring Queen Latifah. My tweens love it too.

Vanessashanessajenkins2 · 07/12/2022 19:42

We always watch Little Women on Christmas Eve. The 1994 version with Winona Ryder is my absolute favourite.
My DSS (11) loves to watch 101 Dalmations on Christmas. I've started to enjoy this little tradition too. Hoping DS (3) will enjoy that this year

RenardeRenarde · 07/12/2022 19:42

I always watch Blackadders Christmas Carol whilst I do the wrapping and the muppet version whilst we have Christmas Eve nibbles.
I love the Vicar of Dibley Christmas specials too, there’s something so homely and comforting about them.

Pirrin · 07/12/2022 19:44

Never seen the Hogfather so will look out for that.

While you were sleeping! That's a blast from the past and has made me think of three rom-com Christmassy films that I like - Serendipity, Family Man (has Nicholas Cage in though), and Man Up with Simon Pegg.

I'd forgotten about the Martin Freeman Nativity films. They seem to be on TV endlessly at Christmas!

This year I started to watch the Royle Family on Britbox and its another one I'm planning to watch on christmas day !

The Tailor of Gloucester is what we used to watch every Christmas when I was growing up. Recorded off the TV on VHS!

As well as the usual Christmas movies, DDs and I watch Cool Runnings.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 07/12/2022 19:52

The new Scrooge film on Netflix is brilliant btw. As is Spirited.

I love Scrooged too with Bill Murray. Makes me weepy at the end

WarmSausageTea · 07/12/2022 19:53

Yes to the Last Holiday. Watched it for the first time last week, and loved it. It’s completely preposterous, but that just added to its charm for me. The Holiday, on the other hand, i loathed.

Yutes · 07/12/2022 19:55

I’m with you OP.
I like to watch the Tailor of Gloucester too.

no more twist!

i like to watch The Christmas Toy on YouTube as well. We had it on video when I was growing up.

HappydaysArehere · 07/12/2022 20:00

Jingle All The Way and Little Women ( the 1940’s version with June Allyson, Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter Lawford - perfect, simply perfect).

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 07/12/2022 20:02

We try to watch as many versions of A Christmas Carol as possible, with particular favourites being the Muppet version and the Ross Kemp modern version. And we always decorate the room and tree to Scrooged, that's become a family tradition!

SingingSands · 07/12/2022 20:03

Die Hard 2

Yutes · 07/12/2022 20:04

Oh! The 1994 Little Women as well.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/12/2022 20:08

Not a Christmas one - but our whole family from grandparents down to little kids adore Mouse Hunt. It has echoes of Home Alone about it because the little guy (the mouse) runs rings around the baddies. We have watched it SO many times and it doesn't get tired.

Moomoo2o22 · 07/12/2022 20:09

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue where do you watch the ross Kemp version I used to watch it every Christmas but couldn't find it last year.

HomeRabbit · 07/12/2022 20:10

Gremlins
Father Ted Christmas special, DH can't go in the ladies underwear Section ever
Bad Santa but not with the kids
Porridge Xmas special, a couple of years ago was surprisingly ahead of its time in terms of not being offensive.

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/12/2022 20:10

Klaus is a lovely animation, but you don’t need children to enjoy it, we don’t have any. It even makes DP and I cry.

dementedma · 07/12/2022 20:10

My friend watches Bernard and The Genie every Christmas. Its a family tradition

10in10 · 07/12/2022 20:11

Lion the witch and wardrobe on Boxing Day

lbnblbnb · 07/12/2022 20:12

A Christmassy Ted (Father Ted)
Planes Trains and Automobiles (I know it is Thanksgiving, but still love it)
Muppets Christmas Carol

Will try Little Women, great idea.

Detectorists' Christmas special is Boxing Day at 9pm this year.

PleaseGoToSleeep · 07/12/2022 20:13

I like to watch gavin and stacey Christmas special when I decorate the tree 🌲
and on Christmas Day morning there is a film - only could find on YouTube about the Christmas Day truce they called in the trenches and played football! Can’t remember what it’s called, a cartoon only about 10 mins but one of my childhood memories!

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 20:15

Pirrin I love those Beatrix Potter adaptations. After 9/11 I got to the stage where I just couldn't watch the news any more. Every morning at about 6.30, DH would get up, make tea and toast for us, come back to bed and we'd watch one of the Tales of Beatrix Potter.
A lovely, calm start to the day. I love DH for many reasons, but this is a favourite memory.
