My husband has binned the Christmas decorations

…yes really.

We’ve still got the tree thank goodness, but was putting it up with the children, when I asked him to go and fetch the rest of the decorations. He then disappeared to the garage and the loft for a very long time, before coming back and very sheepishly saying he has a vague memory of accidentally taking them to the tip.

Since I’m now starting totally afresh, would anyone like to share where they have bought nice ones from?! Especially since DH will be paying!!

OMG. I’m hyperventilating just reading that!

I think I would head to a decent garden centre and buy some nice things and pad them out with a few boxes of basic baubles from Tesco or similar. M&S have some nice things too. Or John Lewis.

my DH would never manage to do that without hiring a truck mind you as we have so much! I’m a tad obsessed!

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 29/11/2022 19:51

Another recommendation for good garden centres, which seem to have everything. If you’re in or near a cathedral city, then cathedral gifts shops often have really lovely traditional things if you’re into that style. National Trust/English Heritage shops also have good things.

But my goodness, your post has made me sad for you! My collection includes items from my grandparents’ and parents’ trees, and things I have collected and DH and I have chosen together over the last 25 years. I’d be so sad to lose them.

olivehater · 29/11/2022 19:58

Get a bunch of filler baubles from B and q, supermarket. Garden center for a few nicer ones. Start a new collection with a couple of really special ones every year. My preference would always be red, gold and green. For the base colors with a bit of deviation allowed for the special ones.

Sunnydaysahead2 · 29/11/2022 20:00

Ouch. That better have been accidental! Agree with Peridot1, get some nice things then pad them out. Try to find some ethically produced/fair trade decorations - some gorgeous ones available.

Zuma76 · 29/11/2022 20:06

I got some really lovely ones from a pound shop a couple of years ago. They fill holes nicely.

ConsuelaHammock · 29/11/2022 20:08

A bumper pack in the colours you’d like and then add a couple every year . I like the Newbridge silverware ones and my children get one each every year in their stockings. Belleek pottery do some beautiful ones too.

Pbbananabagel · 29/11/2022 20:08

Ikea have some lovely scandi style bits good prices. Wilko for lights and base baubles

TootsAtOwls · 29/11/2022 20:09

Have you got a Range near you? They have tons with a good range of prices

ConsuelaHammock · 29/11/2022 20:09

I was ready to say LTB.
Glad he’s paying!
I have old ones, belonged to my gran, along with some new ones. I will keep them forever though. Do you want a theme? Look on Instagram! Happy shopping!

Jamiesontonight · 29/11/2022 20:12

The first year I got a tree I had to decorate with cheap multi-packs from B&Q/Homebase/Argos and just add every year after that.

What is your budget?

What size is the tree?

What is your preferred style?

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/11/2022 20:14

My daughter did that. I put everything in bin bags and put them at the bottom of the stairs. It's the only time in her life she's taken anything out to the wheelie bin.

Daisymay2 · 29/11/2022 20:16

Oxfam have some lovely ones this year. I have banned myself from the purchase of more tree decorations Others M&S, IKEA, wilko but be fussy. If you have a QD or Cherry Lane garden centre they have some great lights .

Changechangychange · 29/11/2022 20:18

IKEA always have far nicer stuff than you’d expect. Or John Lewis.

Liberty if money is no object.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 29/11/2022 20:21

I bought new this year from my garden centre.

IDontDrinkTea · 29/11/2022 20:22

I do believe it was a genuine mistake. They were in a cardboard box in the garage, he was doing a sort out and had a pile of cardboard boxes to take to the tip. Got back from the tip, found a pile of boxes he thought he’d already taken. Looking back, he says he realises he’d taken the Xmas decs the first trip instead of taking the boxes he meant to take. He is rather apologetic and has promised to pay for whatever I choose to replace my collection with.

Would it be strange to reorder baubles that say ‘baby’s first Xmas’ with a previous year on it?! It’s a bit sad those ones are gone.

Not strange at all.

M & S have a few nice ones.

Flaunch · 29/11/2022 20:24

I’d be absolutely heartbroken 😳😩

John Lewis have some lovely stuff, M&S too. Happy shopping!

AlwaysLatte · 29/11/2022 20:24

I think (after taking the husband to the tip - obviously lighthearted!) I would get the family together and have a crisis meeting in a garden centre whereby you all choose things for the tree, have a hot chocolate in the cafe and laugh it away. But I'm not suggesting he's not reminded of it forever once or twice.

IDontDrinkTea · 29/11/2022 20:24

Now I’m browsing baubles, have they always been so… weird? Do people really hang sardines in a tin baubles, or avocado baubles, or any of these weird and wonderful creations on their tree?!

I'd get digging a hole out the back. My Dec's are so precious. 😭

try pound shops and home bargains etc.. mostly tat but you can find the odd nice ones. my husband absolutely hates Christmas. one year I was struggling to put the tree up and came home and he had decorated it all and bought star wars Dec's he added. I genuinely cried my eyes out knowing how much he hates Christmas, but did it to make me happy.. I'll never forget that.

Your husband is a total ass. how is he making this up to you? 🎄

JennyForeigner · 29/11/2022 20:25

Do whatever you want to do. It's your Christmas.

Habitat at Argos are good and v affordable for basics.

Jamiesontonight · 29/11/2022 20:26

It's easy done. I took £200 worth of christmas stuff to the charity shop by accident two years ago - I had the corner of stuff I was keeping and the corner of stuff I was donating.... It still hurts a bit if I am honest!

This wasn't tree decorations though - thank goodness! - They were in their own distinctive christmas bags!

MrsCarson · 29/11/2022 20:28

OMG I'd go ballistic if Dh did that. Married 37 years, all the ornaments the kids made in school when little, all the photo musical ornaments with the kids photos in I did each year and the ornaments each child picked out every year they spent ages in the shop getting the one they loved most. Ones my own friends have crocheted for me over the years. We even put Princess Laya in a gold bikini and Terminator on the tree each year as they were picked when the boys were teens. My tree looks a mess, but we love it.

7Worfs · 29/11/2022 20:30

I highly recommend buying dedicated Christmas decorations bags to avoid such incidents in the future.
IKEA used to do red&white stripy ones - durable, cheap and festive.
