We have had Aunt Bessie's veg sausage toad in the hole, it's lovely.

monsteronahill · 26/11/2022 17:33

We've ordered the parsnipship vegetarian bakes (cheddar and leek and Stilton and potato) and a nut loaf both from Booths. All the veggies and side dishes will be veggie apart from pigs in blankets, we do a separate veggie gravy / roast potatoes without goose fat too.

Plump82 · 26/11/2022 17:34

I'm the vegetarian and I'm cooking a nut roast. I was originally planning on ordering vegetarian pies from Pieminster but delivery etc wasn't going to work out for me.

I'm making this Hairy Biker one which I've already made to make sure it was nice and can absolutely recommend it www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/nut_roast_38249/amp it's really tasty, not dry at all. I added cranberries into it as I didn't realise the cranberries in the recipe were actually for the cranberry sauce and it was a nice addition.

Former vegetarian here (now vegan). I was a vegetarian for around 13 Christmases and in the past I’ve had:

  • slow cooker chicken casserole / stew: quorn vegan pieces, any veg of your choosing (just go with carrots, onions, peas, stock & gravy granules if you’re worried about the veg in this and the veg for the Christmas dinner being too similar). Only put the pieces in for the last hour of cooking as any longer and they lose their texture. This is good as it frees up hob and oven space.
  • sausages on their own or made into a toad in the hole (would recommend Richmond vegan sausages as the nicest)
  • quorn roast (these are actually really nice and brilliant for leftovers the next day)

Quorn also have some new tempura fillets out which would go quite well.

jambalover · 26/11/2022 17:36

My two DDs are vegetarian and they have the veg - sprouts with shallots and garlic, cauli cheese.m, carrot & swede mash, broccoli, roasties and I make Jamie's mixed mushroom stuffing and his vegan gravy -both can be made ahead of the day. It's become the Christmas tradition!

Just fyi the veggies take longer to cook than his gravy recipe say so persevere!

PhantomErik · 26/11/2022 17:38

I'm doing nut roast (cashew nut dry mix by Artisan) & a quorn roast.

I always do Yorkshire puddings & cauliflower cheese with all the usual veg etc.

We're a vegetarian & vegan household as are most of my extended family.

My DSis makes a mushroom wellington which is lovely.

ThreeFeetTall · 26/11/2022 17:44

My husband made this one year, was delicious.

Huge plate of lovely veg!
Not keen on nut type things nor the meat substitutes so I am really really happy ( mouth watering as I type) with a pile of roasted and steamed veg, spoonful of sage & onion stuffing and vege gravy.

Wrongsideofpennines · 26/11/2022 17:49

Nut roast. Layered with stuffing and cranberries. And some chestnuts thrown in. Make it early and freeze then pop in the oven to reheat on the day. And just make sure you have veggie gravy and haven't done your potatoes in goose fat.

I'm a meat eater but all of my husband's family and daughter are veggie. I would avoid quorn joints unless you know they enjoy them. Lots of long standing vegetarians aren't keen.

My MIL cooked fake beef and ham joints for us meat eaters last year and it was just weird. The veggies didn't like it much and the meat eaters knew it was nothing like the real thing.

biscuitcat · 26/11/2022 17:54

This is absolutely delicious! www.deliaonline.com/recipes/type-of-dish/vegetarian-recipes/cheese-and-parsnip-roulade-with-sage-and-onion-stuffing?amp

I've made it for meat eaters before and not bothered with turkey (though I did pop some pigs in blankets on the side!). It freezes beautifully too if you have leftovers, it makes quite a generous portion.

mam0918 · 26/11/2022 17:54

Cheesy pasta with veg in.

Hardbackwriter · 26/11/2022 17:55

We're the veggies and last time we hosted for Christmas we did a butternut squash, blue cheese and walnut wellington which was lovely, so I'm going to do that again this year. There will also be meat (duck, I believe) but one of the guests is cooking that, not me!

Ihavedogs · 26/11/2022 17:58

Nut roast or a mushroom wellington. Suitable gravy and no goose fat or sausage meat stuffing. Otherwise they can probably eat everting else.

Unless you know that they will eat fake meats, I wouldn’t go down that route. I have been veggie/vegan for almost 35 years and I wouldn’t eat fake meat and I don’t know that many who enjoy them.

IamEarthymama · 26/11/2022 18:19

Oh thank you for asking I love sharing this recipe!

DW and I have had this Red Wine and Mushroom En Croute for Christmas dinner every year since we first got together in 1999.
I bought the cook book! and we love it so much ☺️

I don't have gluten now so I make 2, one full wheat flour and breadcrumbs and the other gluten free. The pastry on mine isn't as easy to roll out etc but it tastes really good.

It isn't complicated and carnivore guests enjoy it too.
I am looking forward to making it already!Tthough as we are out with the family on Christmas Eve, I might make it a week earlier and freeze it.

If you don't want to make from scratch there are some lovely nut roasts around too in all the supermarkets.

BeastOfBODMAS · 26/11/2022 18:30

I’m having a mushroom wellington on the day and will do a batch of cranberry & chestnut nut roasts for the freezer to have throughout December. I’m sworn off the bought options as they’re never as nice as they sound

Yeah in general I will eat normal white quorn (usually marketed as 'chicken' but its more like mushroom and comes in any shape) or veggie sausages but I have zero urge to eat any of the things straight up pretending to be meat.

I have seen the plant based steaks recently that look so real dripping with what looks like fake blood that it vicerally makes me sick, who are the marketing that at? because I dont know any veggie or vegan interested in that.

As a kid there was less option but I remember thinking the quorn lamb chops I was once served was the worst most bland cardoardy thing ever.

RaininSummer · 26/11/2022 18:37

Making a veggie wellington as definitely don't want fake meat.

LakeFlyPie · 26/11/2022 18:48

This will be my first veggie Christmas; am going to try out some of these over the next few weeks to see which I might do on the day

DahliaMacNamara · 26/11/2022 18:51

I usually make a mushroom nut roast. It's lovely and moist, and goes well with all the traditional veg. I'd probably cry* if I was presented with a Quorn roast by a well-meaning host, so I always volunteer to bring my own if I'm invited anywhere, to 'save them the trouble'.

*probably not literally. But maybe.

GimmeBiscuits · 26/11/2022 18:52

Roast potaotes and parsnips (done in Trex), all the veg, gravy made with veg oxo, quorn slices (or a quorn roast, if I can find one), veggie stuffing.
Xmas pudding made with veg suet, and custard made with oat milk.

TheChosenTwo · 26/11/2022 18:57

We had a veggie come to Christmas dinner once, dh made her a mushroom Wellington with red wine gravy.
my dd doesn’t eat much meat, only chicken, but we have beef and a ham on Christmas Day. She just eats everything else, which is a meal in itself. Cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, sprouts (dh makes her some without the pancetta), parmesan parsnips, carrots, braised red cabbage, she does like pigs in blankets (although doesn’t normally eat sausages or bacon, she’s an odd sort 😂), can’t remember what else goes on the table at Christmas dinner but she doesn’t ever want anything specifically veggie making for her and Christmas dinner is her second favourite meal of the year!

Washyourfaceinmysink · 26/11/2022 19:04

Mushroom, celeriac & ale pie. I’ve been veggie for nearly 40 years. - have tried a lot of bad recipes and bought in food . This recipe is the only one I have made repeatedly. Can be prepped in advance and easy to adapt for vegans.

dreamcatchmee · 26/11/2022 19:21

There are some lovely vegan wellingtons available in the supermarkets which I enjoy. This year I'm making myself nut roast

noscoobydoodle · 26/11/2022 19:23

My DD had cauliflower cheese tart last year which went down well. I always do a nut roast as well as turkey because I love nut roast but vegetarian DD doesn't like it!

Stompythedinosaur · 26/11/2022 19:29

Delia's roasted veg, pecan and mozzarella strudel.

It is really nice, reheats well on boxing day, and you can make it up the day before ready to be popped in the oven on Christmas day.
