Fun games/board games to play with older kids

DD13 is just a teen, DS is 8.5.

Planning on getting Rummikub as a joint gift. My sister and I played it loads as kids and love it. Would like ideally one or two more age-suitable games that don't take an age to play (looking at you, Game of Life☠) because none of us have the patience. We have all the usuals; Cluedo, Monopoly etc.

I saw Nice Buns which looks ok and DS could probably play. Was also thinking maybe Blokus. Has anyone got other recommendations? I've looked on other threads but some recommendations are aimed at older kids/teens.

Can be a card game but ideally something that's quick to learn with no over-complicated rules. Probably not an action game so no Throw Throw Burrito and suchlike.

My two (almost 11 and 8.5) liked Carcassonne over the summer. Cauldron Quest is actually brilliant, so easy to play but also enjoyable as an adult.

The game Sequence is a fun board game 😃

My niece and nephew like Bananagrams.

Labyrinth is good for those ages, and Dobble if they don’t have it already. OK Play is a good one as they can play just the two of them or up to 4 people.

I like ‘just one’ but it works better in a larger group.

River Dragons is quite a short game but fun and competitive without having too many complex rules.

They might like Rhino Hero - basically you’re building a tower of cards and moving a little rhino up without it falling down.

I don’t have it myself but I’ve heard good things about Qwirkle too.

Yy to Carcassonne
King of Tokyo

Mapominoes - you need a large table though
Skip Bo
Azul

We play Rummikub all the time, we have the wooden version and a travel one. I grew up playing Rummy as a card game but DH hates that, hence the Rummikub one.

We play carcassonne, ticket to ride, catan, dinosaur Island, sushi go, takenoko, through the desert, happy little dinosaurs, azul, fake artist, deep sea adventure, telestrations, pandemic, there are loads. If you've got a good indie game store then go ask for suggestions.

Scrawl (family edition)

MrsBellamy · 26/11/2022 03:46

Family edition of cards against humanity
Family edition of what do you meme are both my kid's favourites.

Watchthesunrise · 26/11/2022 03:53

Exploding kittens or Bananagrams would be my picks for short, fun games.

plinkplinkfizzer · 26/11/2022 05:17

Uno is a really popular game with kids . Never played it myself but my husband plays with the boys .

PhotoDad · 26/11/2022 05:22

Forbidden Island. First game might seem a little complex but it only takes about 30 mins and the instructions walk you through it. It's a "co-operative" game; the players are a team trying to beat the game.

Fab recommendations - thank you, everyone 🙏
