Can I gift my 12 year old my old phone?

my daughters phone got smashed at school, it was broken anyway but someone knocked it out of her hand and it is now completely broken.

I am due an upgrade on my iPhone 12 Pro. I don’t really mind having the latest phone but it’s cheaper for me to get the 14. My phone is in good condition and still in the box.

would I be a cheapskate to gift her my old phone? She has an urban outfitters voucher as her main present. Should I just give her the phone as it’s needed

Not at all, she's old enough to know how expensive phones are & it's not her only present

MintJulia · 23/11/2022 15:25

it makes perfect sense. It also means she can have some extra nice small presents around it. 🙂

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 23/11/2022 15:25

Personally I would see how much it's worth second hand and offer her either a new phone to the same value or your old phone. It's important for teens to understand that a second hand phone is still an expensive and valuable gift and not 'free' because you had it already!

nickelbabe · 23/11/2022 15:28

Yes you can.

Of course you can.
phones are bloody expensive!

PuttingDownRoots · 23/11/2022 15:29

I would with a good protective case and screen protector.

Suprima · 23/11/2022 15:31

Get her a cool case from skinnydip and a good screen protector to go with it, and yes- that’s a lovely present

Crunchycooki · 23/11/2022 15:31

thanks everyone for your responses🙂 she does appreciate how expensive they are and she’s just decided she will be saving any money she gets for Christmas towards a new phone so she’ll be very happy Christmas Day

I’ve done this more than once 😁
Nice new case, usually in the box as DH is obsessed with keeping them all, and then all wrapped up.
I actually don’t think ds has even realised it was once mine!

Crunchycooki · 23/11/2022 15:36

Yes I’ve still got the box so a bit more ‘wow’

Now I’m on the hunt for a heavy duty case and screen protector

Yeah but I'd style it out a bit and get a really nice cover for it. Maybe add some nice headphones or something.

PinkyU · 23/11/2022 15:39

If you don’t mind having the latest phone and are getting the 14 anyway I’d probably gift the 14 (which will be under a warranty) to my dd and keep the 12pro. It’ll be an amazing and unexpected gift.

sheepdogdelight · 23/11/2022 15:40

We sell this as "this is the phone you could get for new" versus "or you could have this [better] phone second hand"

Just add that you could also get decent accident cover for the new phone on top of the warranty more easily than a used, older model.

That's how we have done things too.

(I really don't understand how it could be cheaper for the OP to upgrade to a new phone rather than go onto a SIM only deal on the phone she has presumably paid off though? But there is probably something I'm missing as we buy phones outright and then keep them.)

custardbear · 23/11/2022 15:45

Absolutely! I've done this before and just bought her a nice cover and glass cover for the screen! It was an iPhone 8 a few years ago so a decent phone, as is the 12 ... she'll get a few more presents if you're not paying hundreds for a Phone

Ijustdontwantto · 23/11/2022 15:46

I see I’m in the minority but I think I’d give her the new phone, tbh.

Crunchycooki · 23/11/2022 15:46

basically my phone is split into two different payments
one for the airtime and one for actual phone

I get a discount on upgrading and could pay for only one airtime and 2 phones if that makes sense? It’s weird but it’s actually £15 cheaper per month with discount and a special offer they were running. I’ve probably not explained it clearly I’m sick and can’t think all the way

She does have all her presents, a voucher for urban outfitters, fenty skin care, pottery set, Nike trainers, nice silky pjs, an oodie ( could be a fake lol)

I’ve thought about giving her the 14 and would get insurance out on this too, I’ll order now and decide when it’s get here.

sheepdogdelight · 23/11/2022 15:56

So sounds like she has plenty even without the phone. She's at the age where (if you haven't done it already) you need to move to a smaller number of more expensive presents rather than a lot of cheaper ones that you might have bought when she was younger. Otherwise it will get very expensive!

Crunchycooki · 23/11/2022 15:58

YeH I feel like usually this is what I would normally get her. I’m really lucky I got all except the voucher on offer or discounted.
I do miss the days of cheap presents but I do like having less to wrap.
