Animal tracking bracelets - are they real?

I have four kids aged 13 up and they're all massive nature lovers.

I came across a website named Fahlo which claims to 6 track animals. However if this works and is above board why aren't the wwf doing it? It was a comment made by DH and suddenly I wondered if this was a scam. Has anyone ever purchased a tracking bracelet - do they work?

Dunno... ordered one for Dd so will find out 😁

SueVineer · 22/11/2022 19:24

I got one for dd. It does track the animal if you put the code in (so actually I suppose the bracelet just looks pretty). But dd loved it and thinks it’s her turtle so all good.

ShinyPikachu · 22/11/2022 19:28

I got a necklace one for DD last year. We used the code once when she got it to track her animal and I think she's since lost the info about it. She still wears the necklace though.

If it was me looking into this, I would review the organisations on this page: myfahlo.com/en-gb/pages/about-us and see if they were legit.

I bought one a year ago. The turtle we got information for lost contact with the tracking site after 4 or 5 months. I bought it quite a few months in advance, so that's probably to be expected, and makes me think it is genuine. It was interesting to see how far it travelled.

Thanks all

this is probably a way for members of the public to sponsor research projects.

the researchers want to track the turtles to understand how they travel / feed etc. They can send some data to an app for kids to see and get engaged in the research. And the funding will help with conservation work too.

the same turtle may be tracked by 100 kids. But as long as you don't mind that, then the rest seems pretty legit.

Sprogonthetyne · 23/11/2022 09:17

Just a guess but I imagine there is an animal being tracked (that probably would have been anyway for research/conservation work) and they share that data with people who buy the jewellery. But there's probably hundreds of people all following the same animal and I doubt they track extra animals just because they sold some jewellery.

Finchgold · 01/10/2023 21:35

Did anyone actually get one of these last year? Were they genuine? I followed the conversation last year and couldn’t decide whether to get one or not.

SgtJuneAckland · 07/11/2023 22:12

I've also been looking at these, I looked at club ocean but they have some dodgy trust pilot reviews, Fahlo seems to be better, did anyone get one last year?

FaintlyMacabre · 07/11/2023 22:16

Seems legit I think, we have the Fahlo turtle one and she’s covered a fair distance!

I would just be very worried that at some unpredictable point the turtle will die and I will have a heartbroken child :(.

Spinet · 08/11/2023 07:33

I got one last year and did a bit of research for the same reason, and came to the conclusion that they are legit. Unfortunately I've forgotten why I came to this conclusion except that I remember finding a wildlife research/protection organisation website that said so (but that fahlo was the only one allowed to use their data). Can't remember who it was though sorry.

DD's turtle has stayed in the same place since about March but we have decided the tag fell off rather than that it died.

sunsetsurfer · 08/11/2023 10:28

Great post thank you! I've been debating one of these too as my daughter is a bit turtle obsessed!!

You just say that the tracker stops working after a while, not that the turtle is dead!

EllaMenopee · 08/11/2023 11:04

Ds got a club ocean one last year and is still following his (and a million other people's) whale around the North Atlantic.

CesareBorgia · 08/11/2023 11:10

Not heard of these but I know someone who'd like it. For a novice, how do they work? Do you have to wear the bracelet?

Wills · 08/11/2023 14:13

They are brilliant but I had two penguins drop their trackers. My teens and young adults LOVED them. BUT, you're given the elephant tracking details 3 months in the past as they don't want poachers using the data.

No you don't have to wear them!

I bought myself a bracelet a few years ago and tracked a turtle for about a year I think. Definitely think their legit.

Nonplusultra · 08/11/2023 16:40

I got one for dd a couple of years ago. She checked where “her” turtle was a couple of times but lost interest quickly.

I sponsored a penguin for ds with http://seabirds.org/ and their updates and photos are brilliant. We’ve renewed it year on year and really enjoyed the stories and information.

Adopt a penguin and choose the name of your very own penguin. As seen on BBC TV.

Adopt a Penguin is the ONLY genuine penguin adoption that gives each adoptee their very own penguin. Praised by the Britsh government, BBC TV and Animal Planet.

Do you track on a website or an app please?
