Stocking fillers

Hi all
I never usually bother with stocking fillers as I never know what to get. Thought I would do one for my girls this year.
What do you tend to get?
Thanks
Lou

I’m thinking f the same. I don’t usually do them as the contents often cost the same as a big present. I want to do them this year. I just don’t know what to get. Shower gel and chocolate won’t cut it with my lot.

mumoftwogirls2017 · 21/11/2022 17:22

I have a 9 and 6 year old girls. And was thinking of doing one for their cousin who is 10 year old boy. Haven’t a clue where to start

We do socks, bubble bath, selection pack and small things such as my dd is getting Bluey stuff so the cheaper packs upto £10 are going in there too, new toothbrush, blanket, colouring stuff ect

Longwhiskers · 21/11/2022 17:35

Oh I love stockings! They’re my fave part of Christmas watching the kids open them while I have a cup of tea. So usually do some consumables like choc reindeer and a tube of sweets like smarties or buttons. Might do mini Pringles as we don’t often have those. This year I’ve bought those chocolate spoon things as they both love hot chocolate. And a can each of that coloured squirty foam soap, they think it’s the best thing ever. A packet each of the crackle baff stuff for the bath. That’s as far as I’ve got but I’ll do a few fun toys like a slinky or plane to fly etc. I saw some drinking straws shaped like glasses the other day (so the drink goes in tubes around the eye area) and will get those as it’s the kind of thing mine will love. Prob some glow sticks for discos at home! Etc! Some people put socks and pants. For an older child you could get a small book of crosswords/word search if they like that sort of thing.

Longwhiskers · 21/11/2022 17:36

Ps I usually put a magazine right at the top too as I am a tight arse who usually says no to magazine requests in the supermarket (hate the plastic tat!)

upfucked · 21/11/2022 17:41

Hair slides
chocolate coins
Baths bombs/jellybaff
book marks
clip on earrings
exciting stationery

Leeds2 · 21/11/2022 17:41

Novelty chocolate/sweets, maybe a Chocolate Orange.
Tube of Pringles.
Sticker/colouring/puzzle books, plus felt tips, pencils etc.
Small stuffed toy.
Hair slides/bobbles.
Tube of bubbles for the 6 year old.
Character knickers/vests.
Novelty bubble bath, or soap on a rope if they have a shower.
Christmas cookie eg the individual ones you get from Costa.
Rolled up comic.
Hat and scarf.
Baseball cap.
Roll of sellotape or packet of blu tack (mumsnet swears by these, and I can confirm that 20 years ago my nephew and niece used to love their own sellotape!).
Fancy shaped post it notes.
Book mark.

Mine (4 girls age 10-2) have a little puzzle, some chocolate coins, thick socks for riding, glow sticks (as we’re having a NYE party this year), a book, nail files, shower gel and lip balm, hair clips, fake tattoos, older two want some lucozade (no idea why!) so little ones will get a fruit shoot or something, blue tac and some Pringles! So even tho they are different ages will all get the same things in their stockings!

NCFT0922 · 21/11/2022 17:53

DD 9 has
Chocolates
Silk pillowcase
artist pencils
powerbank
Clip-on ringlight for her phone
Bath bomb from lush
Nice hair clips / slides

"Shower gel and chocolate won’t cut it with my lot."

Then I wouldn't be starting stockings for them. Surely stockings are all about fun things you wouldn't have everyday like pop tarts or chocolate oranges?

We’ll shower gel and chocolate are things you have every day!

Daisydukes79 · 21/11/2022 18:34

A new book
Cute/funny socks
Some sweets
(For daughter) lip balm - Primark does ones in cute flavours and packaging
(For son) Lego mini figure

I pick stuff up during the year in the sales etc and some of that might end up in too

Longwhiskers · 21/11/2022 19:14

Re shower gel being everyday yes mine use everyday but it’s boring old Sanex or similar. If I was going to put some in their stocking I’d choose a fun fruity bottle etc so it can still be something that’s used everyday but just more fun and special.

mam0918 · 21/11/2022 19:28

Well traditionally a stocking has to have money, most people use chocolate coins but some do real coins

Another tradition is an orange, I have no idea how or why it started as a tradition (nothing to do with the real st nick) but I would suggest a chocolate orange because squished rotten fruit in the toe of a stocking is AWFUL if you forget it.

Other ideas:
American sweets or cerial
Fun drinks (milkshake straws, bottles of coke, glittery J2O)
A small game (like a card game)
A small teddy
Fun pens/stationary
Stickers/plasters/blu tack/tape
Lipbalm/makeup/nail polish
Keyring/bottle opener

supercatlady · 21/11/2022 19:32

We used to have a tangerine, a small plastic toy, some Quality Streets, socks, hand cream, chocolate coins and always a Christmas Cracker poking out the top! We used to open them in our room before waking our parents to show them what we’d got lol

PeeJayDay · 21/11/2022 20:26

You get different shower gel, or different chocolate. Maybe American or Japanese chocolate. Or after eights, whatever. Not your normal penguin bars 🤣

Still wouldn't cut it I’m afraid…

DelurkingAJ · 21/11/2022 20:41

Stockings are the best bit (even for adults!)

DSs are likely to get:

  • second hand book
  • shower gel (very exciting to have your own at 6 and 10 it appears)
  • magic flannels
  • stationery
  • chocolate and sweets for the one who eats them, crisps for the one who doesn’t
  • seeds for the garden
  • magazine
  • mini Lego kit
  • Xmas socks (everyone gets those)

As a child I often got embroidery thread and needles, bath stuff, satsuma, dolls house stuff, travel toiletries. Now as an adult there’s usually booze, books, bath stuff and posh chocs. Bliss!

PuttingDownRoots · 21/11/2022 20:44

This year mine have...

Harry potter sweets
HP keyring
HP socks
Funky shower gel
Selection box
Chocolate net
Electric toothbrush
Small beanie boo

Dd11 has
Carrot seeds
Mini boo (ceramic beanie boo)
Pastel highlighters
Big bag on milky way buttons

DD9 has
Hair bands
Mini science kit
Glitter felt pens
Reeses Trees

Might add post it notes or paper clips if I see funky ones

I usually putt a book in, but we are on holiday the week before Christmas so we are all getting a book on the first day of holiday instead (might give selection boxes then too)

BirdyWoof · 21/11/2022 20:45

As a teen I’m pretty sure my stocking contents werre something along the lines of a tube of chocolate/sweets (you know the big £1 ones of smarties etc), socks, a bottle of perfume and a few small makeup bits wrapped up. I think my mums mentality was sticking a few things in there that look small under the tree and then stick some chocolate and socks in to fill it up.

I wouldn’t be going mad on gifts just for a stocking. I think I’ll stick to the same sort of idea- anything small I’m getting anyway can go in there and then whatever room is left I’ll fire some sweeties in and leave it at that.

mam0918 · 21/11/2022 20:53

RosettaStormer · 21/11/2022 20:35

Ok so you decided to start doing stockings which you usually can't be 'bothered' with, asked what goes in stocking and people told you and you say thats not good enough.

I don't really know what magic answers you wan't... maybe stockings just aren't for you.

thegreylady · 21/11/2022 21:43

Something to wear…socks or tights and knickers or gloves and woolly hat
Something to read…paperback or magazine
Something to eat…sweets, fancy nuts, chocolate
Something useful…shampoo, shower gel, toothbrush, sponge
Something to play with… playing cards, magic trick, small Lego box, toy, little game
Something extra…perfume, a piece of jewellery, a purse/ wallet with a coin in it,
Always some kind of small toy at the top. This year I have bought squishy llamas!

TwinsAndTiramisu · 21/11/2022 22:22

I found some great stocking fillers, in these rather interesting wind up toys, which we have as a family tradition. I did a big post about it on the bargain thread, with all the clicky link things, and it took me forever, and it won't let me copy and paste, so the text of the post is below, then if you go to the Christmas Bargain thread 12, ( link below should take you straigh to page 4), you'll see the original post with the proper clicky links to it all....

www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/4678973-thread-12-the-one-with-frosted-tits?page=4

Brilliant stocking fillers...

Had a separate thread about this, but said I would share on here (never done clicky links successfully before, so please humour me if this goes wrong)
I have looked high and low for these particular wind up toys (all quite different/multifunction/intricate) and they're really hard to find, or daft prices on Amazon, however, have found a seller on eBay with a good selection, and well priced (usually about a tenner each). Have ordered and received my 5, and chuffed with all of them. I put one each year in DC's stockings and at the end of Christmas, they go cumulatively in the Christmas Eve box, so next Christmas Eve, we get out all the ones from years gone by, it's a really nice tradition for us.
Here goes....
Elephant with Ball
Blue Dancing Chap
Green Caterpillar
Pecking Duck
Pink Butterfly
Pink Dancing Girl
Erratic Purple Snail (This is one of the ones that I bought and it goes like the clappers Grin )
Purple Dancing Girl that does the Splits
Green Dancing Chap that does the Splits
UFO that can't fall off a table
And if I haven't made a mistake there, I'll be astonished!! Grin

PeeJayDay · 21/11/2022 22:44

"Still wouldn't cut it I’m afraid…"

I really don't understand. What would they do? Reject the gifts, sneer at them? How ungrateful.

A stocking doesn't need to "cut it". The whole point is cheap but fun treats, a tube of pink smarties or a limited edition flavour of chocolate orange or whatever. A bottle of matey for little ones or a scratchcard for older ones. Novelty socks.

If your kids will have issues with that then they seriously don't deserve stockings especially since you've never bothered before!

Stompythedinosaur · 22/11/2022 00:35

RosettaStormer · 21/11/2022 20:35

Still wouldn't cut it I’m afraid…

Unless you are willing to invest serious money, a stocking is always going to be full of little things. It seems really unusual to be that anyone could be that adverse to a chocolate reindeer or whatever. What about stationary? Bluetack, nice pencils? Swimming bag or toys? A paperback book will fit in most stockings. Maybe top trumps or a pack of cards?

Stocking gifts are definitely not trying to repeat the wow of a main gift.
