Stocking fillers

mumoftwogirls2017 · 21/11/2022 16:58

Hi all
I never usually bother with stocking fillers as I never know what to get. Thought I would do one for my girls this year.
What do you tend to get?
Thanks
Lou

Unless you are willing to invest serious money, a stocking is always going to be full of little things. It seems really unusual to be that anyone could be that adverse to a chocolate reindeer or whatever. What about stationary? Bluetack, nice pencils? Swimming bag or toys? A paperback book will fit in most stockings. Maybe top trumps or a pack of cards?

Stocking gifts are definitely not trying to repeat the wow of a main gift.

It would be fine for children but mine are adults and a bit more fussy. (Too fussy). Don’t need to be expensive, just something they actually want.

PuttingDownRoots · 22/11/2022 09:21

@RosettaStormer in DHs stocking I have...

  • dark chocolate orange
  • Christmas socks
  • maple syrup
  • book
  • cocktail can
  • cheese
  • chocolate coins

He usually gets me Fudge, prosecco or a cocktail, socks, silly game and a book

Even for adults, its small things.

PeeJayDay · 22/11/2022 09:24

Adult stockings are also full of small things. If adults can't graciously accept a gift and would make you feel like it "wouldn't cut it" then sod them. They don't deserve anything

buckeejit · 22/11/2022 09:27

Mine love the stocking maybe more than the big gifts.

Always a satsuma & chocolate coins & a mini tin of coke. You could stick in a potato if you need to fluff it out.

I'm thinking of getting a little acrylic music box, stick on earrings, maybe a pack of plasters & blu tac for dd. Maybe Japanese or American sweets to split between my 2 who are 9 & 13.

We're away at in laws this year so can't have too much big stuff

Yes. You have a point.

Eleusa · 22/11/2022 09:44

We do a mix of traditional stocking filler type gifts and some more expensive items- so DD is getting a nice pair of earrings, good mascara, lipstick, pyjamas, a football shirt, along with the usual chocolate coins, lego minifigure etc etc. For adults you could also add alcohol miniatures.

For OP's daughter's age I'd add things like washi tape, gel pens, bath bombs, moon ball, mini notebook.

ok but we have never met your kids, how are we suppose to know what they want?

geraniumsandsunshine · 22/11/2022 09:54

Perfect!

RewildingAmbridge · 22/11/2022 10:00

DS' stocking is from father Christmas the rest is from whoever actually bought it.
This year it contains bluey socks, some hotel Chocolat mini penguins, a lush bubble bar, a single story yoto card, a book, a Lego duck in a bath motorbike thing, a schleich animal, a hot wheels car and a Clementine. He'll be 4 by Christmas.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 22/11/2022 10:04

Children love little things to unwrap, doesn’t matter if they are not all ‘wow’ gifts.

Divebar2021 · 22/11/2022 10:06

Well DH and I do stockings and tend to get slightly more higher end items from the day to day. So we’d buy consumables from Fortnums for example ( marmalade, chocolates, etc) I’d also enjoy special soap, shower gel, hand cream ( Liberty’s or if you’re lucky one of their brands in TK Maxx), a nice nail polish, paperback book ( something like a Penguin classic with a cool cover). Socks ( Paul Smith for him Cos / Arket for me ). cashmere Fingerless gloves, ground coffee from a independent roastery, a nice candle. We probably do 9 or 10 items.

RewildingAmbridge · 22/11/2022 10:08

DHs is
A book, some hot sauce from a local market, bluey socks to match DS, l'occitane hand cream to stop him stealing mine, a lip balm , a graphic novel, chocolate, a lush CBD bubble bar, a nice notebook and pen, Bailey's hot chocolate bomb things and when the Christmas market comes I'll go to the cheesemonger and get him what they call a bauble but it's a big round wax covered lump of cheese, DH likes the one with smoked chillies, for the toe

Divebar2021 · 22/11/2022 10:10

I’d start off with looking at the shops they buy from and see what smaller offerings they have. Museums and art galleries often have really cool bits that you don’t find everywhere on the High street - so the Tate or Design Museum etc. difficult of course to be more specific without knowing what they’re interested in.

Baconand · 22/11/2022 10:18

DD is 3 and has:

A mini set of Fireman Sam books
A magnifying glass
Squirty coloured foam soap x2
Bubble bath in a snow globe
Bubble wand
Peppa Pig Hair clips
New hairbrush
Chocolate coins
A clementine

We don’t do them for each other as on a cost saving drive but as an adult I’d like:

Chocolate
Hand cream
Nice soap
Lip balm
Book
Socks

buckeejit · 25/11/2022 13:30

@TwinsAndTiramisu can you please link the wind ups again? I looked earlier & decided against them but now changed my mind & can't find the link! Many thanks

buckeejit · 25/11/2022 21:57

Don't worry I found it. Then realised that I may as well get the box of 50 instead of 4 as it was cheaper! Grin

I have plenty of people I can gift them to pass onto their dc!

RosettaStormer · 21/11/2022 20:35

Still wouldn't cut it I’m afraid…

Lump of coal then...

Haycorns4Piglet · 26/11/2022 05:06

My mother is the most impossible person ever invented, so her stocking is basically the same every year. It includes:
A scented candle (always Gisela Graham for her)
A Christmas Tree ornament (again, nearly always Gisela Graham)
A foreign language magazine
A pack of patterned tissues
A DVD, usually foreign
A Christmas themed scratchcard
Chocolate - a Freddo and a fudge bar for nostalgia
A fancy soap bar
I always try and include a surprise or 2 though. In the past these have included hand painted drinks coasters, patterned nailfiles, a nice glasses case, a mini torch and gloves. This year it will have a £20 Costa voucher - I can't think of anything else!

You do a stocking for your mother? Really?

XelaM · 26/11/2022 09:36

This totally weird but my daughter has been asking for "fake braces" which I kept refusing as it's a stupid TikTok trend. Thought I'd give in and get some as a stocking present. Who knew braces could be so cool 🤷‍♀️

pigwood · 26/11/2022 09:38

How about the pre-filled ones from Hawkins bazaar? I used to get them every year for mine and the contents are great

Bubbles222 · 26/11/2022 09:45

mam0918 · 21/11/2022 19:28

Well traditionally a stocking has to have money, most people use chocolate coins but some do real coins

Another tradition is an orange, I have no idea how or why it started as a tradition (nothing to do with the real st nick) but I would suggest a chocolate orange because squished rotten fruit in the toe of a stocking is AWFUL if you forget it.

Other ideas:
American sweets or cerial
Fun drinks (milkshake straws, bottles of coke, glittery J2O)
A small game (like a card game)
A small teddy
Fun pens/stationary
Stickers/plasters/blu tack/tape
Lipbalm/makeup/nail polish
Keyring/bottle opener

My mother done that for us money and a orange and some other little bits she still does it now when I do the dc stockings don't forget the orange Blush

You do a stocking for your mother? Really?

Yes, I do. 🙃We didn't have stockings when we were little, but one year my dad was dealing with a major work crisis and was meant to be going away over Christmas, so she bought us stockings and packed them with little things from her, so Father Christmas could come another time when my dad was around, but we'd have something to open on Christmas Day. But they became a part of Christmas and we had them every year. When I reached adulthood I thought I'd be nice and start doing them for her too. Sometimes it makes a person feel good to be nice, you know?

RosettaStormer · 21/11/2022 17:06

I’m thinking f the same. I don’t usually do them as the contents often cost the same as a big present. I want to do them this year. I just don’t know what to get. Shower gel and chocolate won’t cut it with my lot.

That’s because you’re not approaching them right! I grew up they stockings are little bits, chocolate, little game, consumables. Just a bit of fun. Not main presents, they’re separate
