Caught red handed moving the elves

Yes, I know it's early, but the elves came out last week. In our house they just move around and occasionally write a cheeky note. They only set up elaborate scenes when I've had too much wine and think it's funny ...on the odd occasion. Anyway, DD was awake but lying quietly last night when I came to move them round her room. She's 8. She clocked it and asked whether it's me all along so I didn't lie and said yes - grownups want to create some magic at Christmas so this is one of the things we do. She's still devastated this morning. Please help with your advice on how to make it better etc.....

Oh no :( Could you write her a letter from santa explaining that all the elves are really busy this year and he asked all the mummies and daddies to help out in keeping the magic(

Could just carry on doing it? Make them do some really funny things or put a little treat with them. That would work for my DD.

Ive got to admit I dont 'understand' the elf thing so not sure how its done but why is it in the bedroom?

Surely thats a recipe for disaster... I thought they where just in the livingroom, kitchen, bathroom etc...

This is the holy grail. You didn't have to initiate a difficult conversation and you don't have to carry on thinking up crazy things for the elves to do!

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 19/11/2022 14:22

She will question it all now....all the Christmas'magic' and know it's adults

So you may as well come clean a few years early!

Yeah too late OP for hoping anything other than her being upset.
Sorry it doesn’t help - but I bet Santa is next.
Maybe best to plan for that one…
Im sorry this happened!

It's in the open now, just carry on as you have been, she knows it is you, but you can still keep it specially for her if you want to...

AlwaysLatte · 19/11/2022 14:31

Does she have a younger sibling? When my oldest twigged that you dinosaurs don't really trash the kitchen on their own at night he was a bit disappointed but cheered up when I said part of the magic was creating the surprise so he got involved with it and really enjoyed coming up with ideas.

I would say that you had to move the elves yourself as they had got a bit arsey and were threatening to glue themselves to the shelf, as is the current trend for any disgruntlement these days.

I would add that DD should consider herself lucky that the elves didn't chuck a tin of soup over her.

Thank you everyone these are lovely suggestions. Yes, I think that Santa may be next... though I think after the trauma of yesterday were both more prepared for this.
