Christmas/Fairy lights with that old fashioned twinkle and glow?

I'm one of those who prefer the 'old school' indoor Christmas lights, therefore the filament/incandescent mini bulbs which look like tiny candles , each just over an inch long and maybe 3mm to 4mm in diameter. These give off a wonderful glow and often have a gentle twinkle function. I also prefer multi-coloured instead of just plain white. I'm very fussy about my lights. :-)

Trouble is that the old bulbs use a lot of energy, on the other hand LED bulbs are extremely cheap to run (just a few pence a week even at today's energy prices) BUT they are often harsh and overly bright and any 'twinkle' function is more like a maddening flashing sequence. They are also more often that not in the 'wrong' colours - they should be Red, Green, Blue and Yellow but these days they often throw in Orange, Purple, Pink and other colours.

Are there any indoor LED bulb strings which effectively mimic the soft glow of the older filament/incandescent mini lights? Either battery or mains powered? They don't need to by the mini candle shape Must be in the Red, Green, Blue and Yellow colours and also have a good twinkle function if possible.

Thanks in eager anticipation of loads of suggestions. :-)

Just want to thank you for this!

Have just spent the last couple of hours colouring in a cheap ‘tester’ set of battery operated lights. (I had about 25 colours to play with) and they have turned out amazing. They really do take on the soft glow of the traditional fairy lights. I’m blown away.

This is an absolute game changer.

So Thankyou!🥰

Glad it turned out well!

We definitely had pink in our old traditional fairy lights when I were a nipper.

Definitely and it’s the pink one that changes the whole tone of the colours. I have some 1980s ones (I don’t use them as they’ll probably burn the house down) and they are red, orange, pink, green and blue.
I bought some traditional toned LED ones from b&q last year but they don’t have the old fashioned glow, and they don’t have pink

Thanks for the replies. Regarding the colours, one option I guess would be to buy the 'warm white' LED bulbs and perhaps paint them? Or maybe add some suitably coloured 'caps'?

You can get the coloured ones in led

This is genius!

I might give it a go this year

I am definitely doing this, did you just use normal LED lights and sharpies? Genius!

Just spent the afternoon doing this, I got the warm white (battery) leds just as a tester for now and a multi pack of normal sharpies. Turned out better than I imagined!

I found these today (in a certain German store.....)

I went to the range today and bought a set of warm white and a pack of sharpies! Think I know what I’m doing for the next few evenings!

Great, You won’t regret it!
Even though I did these ones as a tester to see which colours sharpies look best I can say I tried every colour I had and they all look great!

Im going to get a larger set of lights later on this week and make a start on them. Dd also wants to do some for her room.
its quite therapeutic and also satisfying when they’re done.

Have Fun!

Can someone who has done the Sharpie thing please post a photograph? Can't find any examples on Google and need proof to justify buying a big pack of Sharpies!

TheDouglasChater · 23/11/2022 07:16

^ yes and also can someone clarify what colours the 'vintage' lights were? From Google I'm guessing it's turquoise blue, green, pink, orange and...red? Not sure about the red.

I have several sets. Most sets comprised of :
Red, pink, turquoise, dark blue, forest green, light green, yellow

I don’t think you’ll get LED ones that look soft and give the kind of effect you’re after - I think you have to choose what you’re prioritizing.

We only have the soft, old fashioned coloured filament bulb kind. Got them years ago in Argos, B&Q and online. Hope they still make them as I’ll be lost without them if ever they break!

Search
Vintage gold
LEDs

You won't need a sharpie they really are vintage gold not bright white or warm white

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/11/2022 17:16

I started my sharpie lights today…. Perhaps slightly overstretched myself with 750 🤦‍♀️ however I have done every 5th one red and will sit tonight and do the orange

Ah the memory of Christmas lights from my pre school years - Christmas tree warm glow, cozy sitting room with a coal fire, best cuddles with my grandad…

I might cry a little in a minute🥹

SpentDandelion · 23/11/2022 17:47

Sunset 2 lights on Amazon , also Premier Red and Vintage Gold, also available on Amazon.
I have both sets, they are both warm, old fashioned and beautiful. The premier ones are my favourite, l have them on a soft glow function. I use them inside and out and have lots of comp!iments.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 23/11/2022 18:38

I saw in Aldi today they are selling vintage Christmas lights looked very pretty just like the old days.

TheDouglasChater · 23/11/2022 21:40

A box of warm white LED lights and a packet of Sharpies will cost approximately the same as the authentic vintage lights I have my eye on, on EBay. Not including the labour costs for my colouring-in Grin

I'm trying to convince myself that they're a better investment as they'll last longer and as op mentioned, use less energy.

I'm thinking waaaaay too much about this!

Authentic vintage lights will use more energy than LEDs and aren't as safe either.

I’m nowhere near finished but here they are so far….

SnotRag22 · 24/11/2022 18:49

Aldi. £14.99 for 100. Exactly like the noma ones listed above but LED. They're beautiful, and nostalgia inducing.

Sounds great. Would you mind taking a look at Aldi's website please and pointing out which ones they are:

Nostalgic fairy lights? Try Christmas world.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/11/2022 20:56

14.99 for 100 lights is very expensive! I’ve seen some that appear to have the pink and turquoise in, £49 for 240 bulbs. That won’t go far on a 6 ft tree
