Christmas/Fairy lights with that old fashioned twinkle and glow?

I'm one of those who prefer the 'old school' indoor Christmas lights, therefore the filament/incandescent mini bulbs which look like tiny candles , each just over an inch long and maybe 3mm to 4mm in diameter. These give off a wonderful glow and often have a gentle twinkle function. I also prefer multi-coloured instead of just plain white. I'm very fussy about my lights. :-)

Trouble is that the old bulbs use a lot of energy, on the other hand LED bulbs are extremely cheap to run (just a few pence a week even at today's energy prices) BUT they are often harsh and overly bright and any 'twinkle' function is more like a maddening flashing sequence. They are also more often that not in the 'wrong' colours - they should be Red, Green, Blue and Yellow but these days they often throw in Orange, Purple, Pink and other colours.

Are there any indoor LED bulb strings which effectively mimic the soft glow of the older filament/incandescent mini lights? Either battery or mains powered? They don't need to by the mini candle shape Must be in the Red, Green, Blue and Yellow colours and also have a good twinkle function if possible.

Thanks in eager anticipation of loads of suggestions. :-)

Actually, ignore that - they're filament.

Yes, I’m fairly sure they are the old style bulbs with removable ‘skirts’.

I've not found them.

I can't abide led lights for various reasons one being they set off migraines.

I have a few sets of traditional fairy lights and got some with the old plastic shades on eBay last yr.

I'm currently looking at firefly ones in warm white for Robert Days but they say they twinkle.

I'm probably going to have to bite the bullet and order, just to find out if the twinkling bit can be turned off🤣

I'm ok to absorb the cost of them being more to power. Then again it's better for me.

I have the warm white Firefly lights that twinkle gently, and the twinkling can't be turned off.

Not found coloured ones but have firefly lights and they are fab, they twinkle in a seemingly random pattern and do remind me of old Christmas lights not the regimented twinkle of newer led lights

Hiya do the firefly ones have a non twinkling setting.
They do look beautiful. I saw them on a tree in a garden centre, but thought hmm maybe they'll be too much in my small living room.

Also do you know which ones you have.
Thanks

Ah ok that's answered my question thanks. I should have scrolled down further!

Squiblet · 18/11/2022 15:07

These M&S ones are in more traditional colours.

frozendaisy · 18/11/2022 17:30

We definitely had pink in our old traditional fairy lights when I were a nipper.

Dogsgottabone · 18/11/2022 17:40

I got the kind you are after on amazon a couple of years ago. But you are wrong, in the 80s and 90s those old coloured lights had pink in too and the blue was turquoise. These days there is no pink and the blue is horrific.

I can't believe it's beyond the wit of man to make led lights in old fashioned colours.

Based on threads on here every year it would make a fortune.

I have my parents lights from the 80s but they don't work anymore so I can assure you I am correct about the colours!

DuchessDandelion · 18/11/2022 18:33

@Dogsgottabone that's true.i loved the pinks and blues, and soft yellows in the 90s. Pleased this year to see those colours making a reappearance.

I have these. Currently out of stock but they are very pretty.

Most LED lights come with different settings, and there is usually a nice twinkle setting. This is what I prefer rather than flashing in the corner of my eye!
I normally go for warm white colour but I'm sure the same applies to coloured ones.
Or try some solar ones with the copper wire?We have some in the garden that are twinkly. Like these:

I have these - a set on a little obelisk at the the back of the house. They last very well and wok with minimal sunshine and are twinkly I would ay, but obviously do not have shades...... I also have some lovely clar (warm) on another little obelisk at the front, although there are timed battery-powered (so can be used inside), from local small home and hardware shop, cost only £5 but need batteries (even Duracell) 3 x AA quite often, are on static from 5pm to midlight. I love them. They are in the cauldron in this picture.

Amber coloured and a gentle twinkle

You are correct.

I've had success in painting LEDs with sharpies to create the old colours. As you say the blue was turquoise rather than emergency services blue.
I did red, orange, pink, turquoise and soft green.

Mrstwiddle · 19/11/2022 01:05

I bought the Noma lights last year. Within 4 weeks all the lights had gone, such a shame as they were lovely for the very short time they lasted :(

Freeasabird76 · 19/11/2022 01:46

These say LED.

StellaGibson2022 · 19/11/2022 01:58

Ah the memory of Christmas lights from my pre school years - Christmas tree warm glow, cozy sitting room with a coal fire, best cuddles with my grandad…

Pixiedust1234 · 19/11/2022 03:12

I cant stand the disco flashing either. Plonking myself here in case somebody finds the twinkles

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 19/11/2022 03:36

Following with interest. Like PP said, I'd love to find ones with that 80s turquoise and warm pink among the colours (but still led) rather than the harsh newer ones.

evilharpy · 18/11/2022 10:01

If they exist, I haven't found them. I bought some coloured lights with little shades on them from Aldi last year but the bulbs are just coloured LEDs and the blues in particular are quite harsh.

I pine for the beautiful landern-shaped Pifco London lights we had when I was a child. My dad spent half of December trying to find which bulb had gone this time Grin but it was so worth it.

Me too!

I have the old style coloured fairy lights and have been looking for an led equivalent for several years now. Not sure they exist. I also bought the Aldi ones as on the website they didn’t look too garish but when they arrived was disappointed they got relegated back to the loft and didn’t use them!

I did manage to find a set of pastel leds in Tesco that kind of blend in with my traditional lights they only have pink turquoise purple and yellow, no red or green though.

This is genius!

I might give it a go this year

Just want to thank you for this!

Have just spent the last couple of hours colouring in a cheap ‘tester’ set of battery operated lights. (I had about 25 colours to play with) and they have turned out amazing. They really do take on the soft glow of the traditional fairy lights. I’m blown away.

This is an absolute game changer.

So Thankyou!🥰

I'm with you except on the colours. Vintage bulb lights have pink and orange, which makes them warmer. Modern colour LED have no pink orange, but blue which makes them cold. I have forked out on bulb lights for years but they always break, so I'm giving in this year and just using warm white. Which is better than cold led colours!
