Skincare for 10 year old

Is this what 10 year old are into these days? We've been given a list and it's just got a load of skin care on it. I feel a bit weird buying serum for a 10 year old but maybe I'm out of touch. Any ideas of good brands for preteens? It's for my neice. I'm tempted to just ignore it and get something else.

Why ignore it? I don’t think it’s a new thing for 10yos to care about skincare. I teach my 8 & 10yos about skincare. A 10yo will be heading to high school next year and could well be into puberty where taking care of her skin is important.

I couldn’t tell you whats popular though as I only ever use products on my DDs that i used when younger and feel safe with, because one of my DDs is like me and has sensitive skin. I only use Nivea, they have face wipes, face wash, eye makeup remover and moisturiser ( body & face). They also have deodorant ( well my 10yo dose) and body sprays. For body sprays I use impulse and Ted Baker ones, both love the one in the dark pink bottle.

My DD with sensitive skin has never done a face mask but my other one has. I’ve let her use the 7th heaven ones. Same with bath bombs, my sensitive child dosnt use them but the other dose.

My lifelong love of skincare began aged 10. That was 1993. I really don’t see a problem? I definitely wouldn’t ignore a specific request if that’s what your niece wants - why buy something different to what she’s asking for?

SashaAlabaster · 16/11/2022 09:16

It always seems young to me, too, OP! Pretty sure I was only using a flannel and soap myself when aged 10.

Puberty sooner now?

Tricky, as the 'babyish' products get a thumbs down nowadays, but the 'teen' market is often targeted at specific skin issues.

I guess the focus is best being on establishing good habits with simple products they'll actually use, rather than hyped and gimmicky stuff.
And definitely not allowing them to get sucked into believing they have to follow complicated 11 step routines...

High quality ingredients, containing nothing harsh etc.
All good but reflected in some steep prices, be warned!

This line was specifically developed for pre-teens by a concerned Mum:

Or maybe a fun cleanser like this?

My 10yo isn't really into skincare yet...not facial skincare anyway. She just washes with a gentle face wash and that's it! But she hasn't quite hit puberty yet so no skin issues. She does love receiving nice cosmetics generally though...like nice bath stuff, body lotion, body spray. She wouldn't know what serum is! But I wouldn't ignore your niece's list though. If that's what she wants and it's within budget I'd get it. Job done.

brighterthanthemoon · 16/11/2022 10:03

She wants serum and a jade roller.

I don't feel comfort buying a jade roller for a 10 year old.

I'll look into some moisturiser. She doesn't have acne yet. Maybe the body shop? But that wouldn't be cool enough. Is that Florence by Mills stuff cool?

@SashaAlabaster Spots and stripes looks good thank you

Jade roller pretty tame. Amazon sell them cheaply.

Spots & Stripes or the Stranger things woman's stuff seem OK. Aimed at her age.

Ok so it seems this is what some 10 year olds like. Thanks every one feel more reassured.

Would a 10 year old boy want serum and a jade roller? If not, why not?

Summertime16 · 16/11/2022 10:10

witcheslab is natural and amazing for sensitive skin. Glowhub is aimed at teens also

I don't know? I'm a bit weirded out she even knows about a jade roller. And a guasha which looks like a flat rock no idea. But aparantly it's normal.

My DD is 9 and has a skincare routine (I am 37 and wash my face in the shower!). She likes the Simple skincare range and sheet masks. She'll be asking for more for Xmas - I'm looking at Florence by Mills or OY! (Organic young). She hasn't asked for a jade roller but I would get her one if she did. She watches some beauty YouTubers which is where she gets her information from.

brighterthanthemoon · 16/11/2022 10:31

Function of beauty shampoo- thats on the list too. It looks to be £25 quid though!

PinkPrettyAndPointed · 16/11/2022 10:34

Thank God my 11 yo is not into this. As if we don't have a long enough road to tread bloody shaving/waxing/dying etc 🙄

AriettyHomily · 16/11/2022 10:37

It's a tiktok / youtube thing. My 11 year olds have a better skin routine than I do.

Primark has loads of serums / face masks / jade rollers etc that are decent and won't make them break out in allergies just check the ones you chose don't have retinol / hyularonic (sp?!) acid in them, I think that is too harsh. Mine love the SPF serum. Cerave is really popular.

Mine have Drunken Elephant on their lists - not a chance it is £££

brighterthanthemoon · 16/11/2022 10:40

I just feel a bit sad. Fancy shower gel fine, maybe even some moisturiser but why is she worried about serum and rolling things on her face at 10?

I could get her some bits and a book voucher.

I was literally going to post the same thing.
You also don't see parents on here teaching their DS how to "look after" their skin with elaborate regimes.
It only seems to be girls. Funny that...

They'll be making manly rollers soon enough I'm sure.

My DD was into skincare age 10 (now 12). She's costs me a fortune in F50 Sunscreen and I'm struggling to get her to see that what is useful for a 30yo influence is not the right skincare for a hormonal 12yo!

She likes Body Shop, and ELF and bought her own jade roller. My deal with her is I buy the things I feel she needs, so cleanser, moisturiser, Sunscreen and spot treatment and she buys anything else. I have right of veto over specific products to stop her going too heavy. On the bright side, she is no longer into make up because it's all about perfect skin and natural beauty 😀

I don't think it's unusual for 10yos to like skincare and there's worse things on a Christmas list.

brighterthanthemoon · 16/11/2022 10:54

@NotEvenSlightlyReasonable OK good shout. I might get moisturiser and maybe some good sunscreen. I'll leave the serum and weird stones for other people to get.

My DS us starting to take care of his skin. I'm not going to discourage a routine that keeps him clean and his skin healthy.
I had an ex with awful skin (that bothered him) that was easily cleared up with some simple steps but he'd never been in a routine so found it hard to remember.

Doesn't need to be a 15 step The Ordinary Acid foxtrot shebang! Just looking after an organ that takes a battering and affects how you feel about yourself!

Dinoteeth · 16/11/2022 11:40

I think Boots No7 has a skin care range aimed at young skin.

Dinoteeth · 16/11/2022 11:41

@Gr33ngr33ngr4ss what age is your DS and what is he using?

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 16/11/2022 12:46

He's 11. He's on a Simple Moisturiser and an orange coloured Neutrogena face wash. Both just functional and mild. And cheap! He also uses my anthelios which I can't really complain about but I'd like to find something less ££

Quite. Putting lots of different products on the skin on your face isn't necessarily looking after it. And doesn't the skin on the rest of your body also need serums etc to look after it?
