Skincare for 10 year old

Is this what 10 year old are into these days? We've been given a list and it's just got a load of skin care on it. I feel a bit weird buying serum for a 10 year old but maybe I'm out of touch. Any ideas of good brands for preteens? It's for my neice. I'm tempted to just ignore it and get something else.

Quite. Putting lots of different products on the skin on your face isn't necessarily looking after it. And doesn't the skin on the rest of your body also need serums etc to look after it?

Good idea I'll get some body lotion. I'm far more comfortable with that than serum.

I got some basics from the Inky List for my 11 year old DS - a gentle cleanser, toner and the water cream.

Dinoteeth · 16/11/2022 13:30

@Gr33ngr33ngr4ss thank-you. My 11yo boy is is just starting to get a couple of spots. I'll have a look at the face washes. Might be a worthwhile stocking filler.

Mine & DS2's bodies don't need serums as such but we are both dry & KPd so we do use some creams. Or we are itchy!

DS1 just needs a routine so it becomes habit to be clean before / if it becomes an issue. His body is OK with a decent shower gel for now.

None of us are obsessive.

My dd (11) loves Simple products like face wash & moisturiser. I can’t see what’s bad in doing good skincare now I wish I’d looked after my skin as good.
She also bought herself a jade roller, I have one and all we use them for is relaxation as it feels so lovely so might use it as a mindfulness session or to chill before bed.

mam0918 · 16/11/2022 16:43

I see no reason on earth why a 10 year old cant have a jade roller... OP you sound seriously out of touch and judgemental.

As for serums, Im not buying a 10 year old £50 wrinkle cream but lets be honest I highly doubt she wants anything like that.

Why bother asking what she wants then buying her random crap she doesnt want? like if you asked me what specifically to get and I asked for glow essence and a roller and got SPF50 sunscrean instead I would think you where dense honestly because its not remotely the same thing.

If your not going to get what she wants then just get her a teddy or something, dont buy her something so wildly unrelated in the same catagoty its an insult (I mean sunscrean instead of serum is equal to buying toothpaste instead of lipstick).

brighterthanthemoon · 16/11/2022 16:45

@mam0918 I know I'm out of touch that's why I asked! Jeez

At that age she has plenty of collagen so Is being exploited by marketeers along with her friends.

I understand peer pressure, but as long as her face is clean she doesn't need anything else - perhaps some moisturiser if she's outside in the cold & wind & appropriate uv protection in the sun. There will be plenty of time for skin care shit in future.

At that age I had plenty of collagen and a nose full of blackheads!

readingismycardio · 17/11/2022 13:22

I would gift her a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and a good spf. Never too early for good skincare. What type of serum is it?

NashvilleQueen · 17/11/2022 13:26

I thought the same but I have to admit many teenage girls have beautiful skin and far fewer blemishes than they did in my day when we were told to just use soap and water.

Smartiepants79 · 17/11/2022 13:34

It’s playing dress up isn’t it? Playing a role.
My 10 and 12 year olds love this stuff.
My rules are basically - nothing that could damage the skin, nothing too expensive.
Buy the bits that aren’t going to harm her skin and be the cool aunt.
We’ve had the simple range and the teenage version of nip and fab.
Clay face masks, hair masks, fancy shampoo, shower gels and body sprays are all pretty harmless and much enjoyed in this house.

I have absolutely no idea what a jade roller is and am stunned that 10 year olds don't just use soap and water on their face. It's so depressing to think that they are already falling for the massive con that makes people think they need (expensive) skincare.

N4ish · 17/11/2022 13:45

I think it's depressing too. Setting young girls up for a life time of feeling they need to spend a fortune on 'pampering' and 'taking care' of their skin. I also have no idea what a jade roller is!

Piling loads of chemical products on to the delicate face of a 10 year isn't necessary, agree some specific products might be helpful for teenagers dealing with acne breakouts.

Who just uses soap on their skin now a days?

Soap is harsh and damaging, might aswell bathe in hand sanitizer as it will dry your skin the same... and non of this stuff people are talking about is 'expensive', hell the oil stuff I use cost £1.99 from homebargains clearly make a MASSIVE difference to my skin.

DD is a very grown up almost 10 and is like this! Florence by Mills looks lovely as a Christmas treat.

GrimDamnFanjo · 17/11/2022 14:32

I have bought my 13yr old an Ordinary cleanser?

Cas112 · 17/11/2022 14:35

My 11 year old sister has asked for same. I think its very on trend at the moment. What is wrong with looking after your skin?

Nothing is wrong with looking after your skin. But using lots of products on your skin isn't looking after it . Your skin doesn't need beauty products

Yes I think the Florence by Mills stuff looks OK.

I'm going to get some sheet masks and I'm thinking a body shop moisturiser and a body lotion or maybe a face wash. I just can't bring my self to get toner or serum or stuff.

Yes if anythinf I'd worry her skin would get sensitised to too many products.

My DS 11 is also into skincare and I have got him a few bits for his stocking.

It is harmless!

Harmless? That does depend on what you got.

Mistlefrog · 17/11/2022 21:35

Of all of this I’d rather buy the stones!
i hear you, it’s sad that they want skincare at that age if they’re worried about how they look
but the roller is a bit bit of self care, they feel lovely, she may just enjoy it. I think 10 year old girls have been trying to copy what older girls do for decades, it’s just that now it’s fancy skin care! Seems much more positive than the over plucking, diet culture of the 90s anyway.

Rainbowshit · 17/11/2022 22:15

My DD is 13 and has been into skincare products for a good while now.

She spent £50 of her birthday money on Florence and mills products.
