Nail polish for teen

My dd is 14 and has just succeeded in stopping biting her nails and has lovely long nails. I'd like to buy her some nail polish, and a care set as well as polish remover. She's not a pastel girl, she painted her toe nails black over the summer !

What colours are teens into atm? Would be very grateful for any suggestions and also any good care kits ?

I still bite my nails so this is all new to me 😁

Try www.essie.co.uk

There's loads of colours / sets and they do tools etc too. The polish is fairly good quality too. Goes on easily and lasts a while.

Great thank you; Essie looks great. I'm just clueless on what colours are 'in'!

Maybe stick with some classics? If she's not into pastels I'd get a good quality black one, a deep deep wine red, perhaps a deep forest-like green, a sage green, a navy blue?

I think "in" wise it's winter soon so deep reds and jewel tones, classic frosted winter ones with glitter (doesn't sound too up her alley though!) and greens are everywhere from sage to muddy green!

Thanks that's reassuring as I've just been browsing Essie on Boots and have initially selected an almost black (licorice), either khaki green or very dark blue, a cobalt 'aruba' blue and a very dark red. So looks like I'm on the right track. The blues in particular make me think about sorting my own nails out they're lovely .

You're right she hates glitter, and yet I have so much glitter. I guess that's why it's a bit mumsy these days!
Going to go for the khaki green and add a sage green as well

Or this one in bright colours - perhaps a bit more summery though.

Colour choices sound good. Have a look at Mavala nail polishes too. Similar colours, nice small bottles and are free from the 13 harmful chemicals found in nail polishes.

Brilliant thanks I think I'm going to make my own nail gift box so have got nail file, varnish remover (she's been using mine which is about 30 years old 😳), and then 5 colours a khaki green, denim blue, deep turquoise, almost black and a purple . Should I get a top coat? (Jus so she feels professional ?!).

And then in the new year I'm going to grow mine after 50 years of nibbling them and use all her varnishes 😁

Definitely a top coat and base coat! Will help it last longer too 😊 those colours sound fab too!

Ooh I'm excited now ! Thanks for the help!

Oooh definitely a purple!

neonleopard · 09/11/2022 17:34

I just bought myself a nails inc 'neon quad' which are quite fun colours! Agree Nails Inc and Essie both good brands.

I think colours are very personal, I always attracted to metalic purple or blue regardless of age.

Most people I know are buying their own gel nail stuff now with the lamps, thats the huge trend right now (even my tomboy friends who dont do their nails have bought them, I feel like I'm the only person without one lol).

If you want old school polish I always liked Sally Hanson Quick Dry stuff as having tacky nails for 48 hours and not being able to do things like put your hands in your pocket without gouging a chunk out sucks.

@woohoowoohoo If you’re making your own gift box maybe consider buying some reusable pads for her to use. You can buy them online or in a health food/eco shop & so much better for the environment than using cotton pads

woohoowoohoo · 09/11/2022 21:58

Yes we have these for makeup already good idea

You can get really nice advent calendars with just nail polish.

I use Essence nail varnish. You can buy it in wilko. It's cheap and lasts ages, and they've got really fab colours. They've got loads of nail bits to put in a hamper too, including little nail transfers and touch up pens etc.

Mumdiva99 · 10/11/2022 06:27

I would be looking at the quick dry polishes. Like Sally Hansen insta-dri - that's what I'm getting my teenager.

Ketakones · 10/11/2022 06:33

Essi or essence has quick dry drops. They aren't expensive and go over the top coat. Help it try faster so it doesn't chip. Essential for impatient teens! Also fab present! Well done, hope she loves it.

Thanks for all the encouragement and ideas on this thread. I'm in theChristmas mood now. Got them at Superdrug which has a 3 for 2 offer on them if anyone else is looking .
Will get the quick dry drops, definitely needed !
