Stockings for adults?

I’ve noticed that in some families, there are stockings for the adults as well as children. How are these explained regarding Santa? I’m not from the UK and come from a family that did not celebrate Christmas.

We know they're not from Santa and just do them for each other?

They play along if they have little kids. Some people keep doing it as they always have. I think it's a waste of money myself - my kids (teens) haven't had them for years. They look nice hanging from the mantle though so we got one for each of our pets! I fill them with treats and dog/cat toys.

In my family, Santa leaves a present for each child on the end of their bed to wake up to.
We, the adults, do stockings and gifts under the tree. So we all have a stocking and pike of presents.

In our house, Santa fills the children's stockings, but the adults fill each others, because Santa does not come to adults.

Everyone sleeping in our house on Christmas Eve gets a stocking (even if just a very little one) regardless of age.
But the children know perfectly well that Father Christmas only comes to children - grown ups do it for each other, because it’s fun.

Stockings aren't from Santa.

They are a tradition in honor of the Saint Nicholas as he gifted money in stockings.

Santa is a made up magical person who lives at the north pole and has flying reindeer based off the eastern tradition of Ded Moroz ('Grandfather Frost' who is an underworld Imp).

I have no idea how or why people mix up the real life person St. Nick with the entirely fictious and impossible Santa/father christmas... its like claiming the Easter Bunny is the same person as Jesus.
