Best board games for 5 year old similar to Monopoly?

EnterHere · 03/11/2022 12:47

He will be 5.5 at Christmas time. Loves numbers and counting.
Likes Monopoly Junior.
Hates loud noises so things like operation where it buzzes are out.

Can anyone recommend other games?
We've had kerplunk and gooey Louie which he wasn't keen on so thinking more Monopoly-like.

Thanks

MNHQ Update
This thread is a little old now, but if you've come across it while on the hunt for similar recommendations, our guide to the best family board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability. While many options are geared towards older players, there are several games younger players will enjoy as well - all tried, tested and approved by Mumsnetters. We hope it's helpful! Flowers

Junior cluedo and junior Scrabble?

Filleto · 03/11/2022 12:53

Monopoly junior is my 6 year old’s absolute favourite. She also likes uno, kids of carcassone, Marrakesh, game of life, mind the gap, orchard toys pop to the shops, and various pairs/matching games

EnterHere · 03/11/2022 12:55

I should add we have junior scrabble and lots of orchard games.

Junior cluedo sounds good though. Thanks

My First Ticket to Ride
Catan Junior

Not a board game but frustration, uno and pass the pigs are all hits in our house.

Marblessolveeverything · 03/11/2022 13:41

What about playing card games?

SweetPeaPods · 03/11/2022 13:47

My 2 love junior monopoly, uno and dobble.
Have you looked at Junior game of life, guess who, mouse trap?
Orchard toys do some good ones too.

BlueChampagne · 03/11/2022 15:14

Jaipur
Rummikub

Christmaslover2022 · 03/11/2022 15:18

Mime love cludeo junior and game of life!

Voiceofreason92 · 03/11/2022 18:25

As previously mentioned,
junior Ticket to ride is fantastic, as is My First Carcassonne. And actually enjoyable to play as an adult.

kavalkada · 03/11/2022 20:30

Not exactly like Monopoly but these board games are perfect for 5 year olds:
The Enchantred Tower (the most beautiful board game for kids)
Spinderella
Dragomino
Kingdomino
Ticket to Ride junior
The Magic Labyrinth

Awumminnscotland · 04/11/2022 11:43

For numbers..shut the box , magic maths, uno, cafe money match and pop to the shops.
There's also Mammoth maths but we found that a bit boring.
I always have 3 dice in my bag for times of quiet waiting, good for simple numbers and adding and subtracting .

Also Outfoxed, Guess in 10, Junior cluedo .

Connect 4? Snakes and ladders and the gruffalo deep dark woods game are popular with my 5 year old. We also play snap, uno-type games and dobble.

movehimintothesun · 05/11/2022 09:33

Labyrinth (don't know if they do a junior version?)
Hotel has Monopoly/Game of life vibes and is a real favourite in this house.

Titsflyingsouth · 05/11/2022 09:50

My son loved 3D Snakes and Ladders at that age...

Also colour-dot dominoes were popular.

Scrambledeggsontoasted · 05/11/2022 09:53

Have you looked at one of these

Scrambledeggsontoasted · 05/11/2022 09:54

Sorry posted too soon! One of those sets that are 10 games in one?

He might also enjoy card games if he likes numbers.

Rainbowqueeen · 05/11/2022 09:54

Sleeping queens

Tartifletti · 05/11/2022 09:55

Another vote for Catan junior, which is actually fun for adults too.

bettybyebye · 05/11/2022 10:24

We are huge fans of monopoly builder in our house. My son got it for Christmas last year and we much prefer it to actual monopoly!

thismeansnothing · 05/11/2022 10:32

Junior rummikub perfect for those who like numbers

thismeansnothing · 05/11/2022 10:33

And you can't go wrong with Uno

JamMakingWannaBe · 05/11/2022 10:45

Not an academic game by any means but we like Kersplat!

yoshiblue · 06/11/2022 15:09

Not numbers based but Ravensburger Funny Bunny is good for that age, currently 60% off £7.99 on Amazon. Still have to count onwards to move.

Monopoly Deal card game too, but it might be a little bit old for him yet.
