Gift for 62 year old lady…

ChakaKhanfan · 03/11/2022 10:54

Not my mom but someone I care for deeply.
She is a widow and had breast cancer herself a couple of years ago although (hopefully) fully recovered.

She is wonderful to me and my children and I want to buy her a gift. It’s usually just socks and chocolate but this year I want to treat her a bit more.

She doesn’t really drink, I know she likes to read crime thrillers, she has mentioned a few times about sensitive skin (chemo side affects) not really sure what she watches on TV or whether she has a DVD or not.

Any ideas?
I am rubbish at gift buying!

Could you ask anyone close to her what she might like?

Or even, ask her directly, telling her how much you value her and would like to spoil her? (Not very British but she might like to know)

Ideas - a day out together somewhere special eg theatre

Make up a photo album for her

Special skincare (really she needs to tell you what she likes though)

Massage voucher

I really want to be supportive but you are making a 62 year old sound like a really old lady - why would she still have a DVD player rather than stream movies like the rest of the world.
However you want to buy her something nice which is great - what would you like to receive yourself as a nice treat?

Mrsjayy · 03/11/2022 10:59

A reasturant voucher or afternoon tea out with you or another friend might be nice,

Genuinely don’t mean to- I’ve just never been in her home and she doesn’t talk to me about tv so I wouldn’t know where to begin with films, sorry!

Day out together sounds lovely thanks!

Well obviously 62 year olds are as varied as any other age group so I'm not sure how you think her age will help. But anyway, the one thing I can say as a person of that age group, is that many of us have accumulated a lot of 'stuff' by more, so consumables are good.

Is she a foodie? I often make hampers ( not the bought sort, they're stupid expensive) but just a decorated carton or big gift bag filled with tissue strips and themed foods. M&S or Waitrose have lovely stuff that you can theme by, say, Italian or French stuff. Or maybe a flavour theme like coffee, or afternoon tea?

Mrsjayy · 03/11/2022 11:01

I still have advd player I don't stream movies I hate streaming im not 62. Not everyone is into Streaming Netflix.

xyzzyx · 03/11/2022 11:07

A hamper of good whether it be food snacks or soaps and lotions...
A nice scarf
A bracelet
New purse

PaulGallico · 03/11/2022 11:07

@Mrsjayy totally understand that..but as a 62 year old myself I just get a bit tired of being represented as a really old person when I still work full time, have a social life an so on.

My grandparents are 82 and independent and techie and they would be mortified at being described like this - never mind a 62yo!

Defiantlynot41 · 03/11/2022 11:17

@PaulGallico me too, am nearly 61 but hate being thought of in the elderly camp

I'd like:

Really nice candle, (eg Jo Malone, Neom) diffuser (same brands or SKANDINAVISK is good ) or Neom oils for an electric diffuser - if she hasn't got an electric diffuser they are lovely and John Lewis have a Neom usb chargeable one for £50

Some lovely chocolates- Godiva , Paul A Young etc

Flower subscription from Cornish Blooms or a really nice Christmassy fresh flower arrangement/delivery

Yoga gear (obviously very dependent on taste/activity) and need to know size

Books are good if you know their taste

Magazine subscription, coffee subscription from Columbia Coffee Roasters in Oxford

If she lives alone , a selection of half bottles of good wine or even champagne

Cashmere snood , I have one of these and it's so cosy, I wear it loads in winter, comes in lots of colours. https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-cashmere-snood/light-blue/p5685618?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

You know you are right @PaulGallico I'm sorry it was the tone you were on about not the actual words , I still hate Netflix though 😀

This place does lovely roses:

Maybe see if they've got one with her name in?

ChakaKhanfan · 03/11/2022 11:20

God I feel awful for describing her in such an old way. She really isn’t, I’m just realising I don’t know her that well, as wonderful as she is, she is my neighbour and we chat every day but I don’t know a great deal about her.
Certainly don’t know if she is techie or not. 😬

Anyway cheers, lots of good ideas!

I second the cashmere snood from John Lewis. I have a couple and love them.

pattihews · 03/11/2022 11:30

No idea what your 62-year-old friend would like. As 61-year-old 'lady' I'd like:

a new dry robe
an inflatable kayak
a new kettle for my camper van
a Mulberry Antony messenger bag, preferably vintage
Grenson Harlow Chelsea boots
loose tea (Earl Grey, Darjeeling BOP, Lapsang) and coffee from Fortnums
a treat from Betty's tearooms www.bettys.co.uk/afternoon-tea-delivery

TwoBlueFish · 03/11/2022 11:41

How about a subscription

  • book & biscuit
  • flowers
  • magazine
  • cookies/cakes
kateandme · 03/11/2022 11:41

After chemo my friend really struggled to regulate her temp and got cold ever so quick.so what about a really luxurious proper wool sofa blanket.

I completely agree. At 62 she is quite likely still working. I say this as a 68 year old lady.

ChakaKhanfan · 03/11/2022 11:51

She doesn’t work anymore.

The wool blanket is a wonderful idea thank you. Currently online shopping ☺️

I am 60 and I'd like a beauty voucher for a pedicure or facial. I'd have liked that at 40 and 20 too!

This was one of my first thoughts but I’m not 💯 sure she would use it as I know she has to be careful with what she uses on her skin.

Appreciate everyone’s input

I third this, much better than a blanket or wrap. More luxurious.

bigblueyonder · 03/11/2022 17:57

House plant

If she does not drink maybe a posh non alcoholic bottle of something like Pentire or Feragaia feragaia.com/

Candles

Mossstitch · 03/11/2022 18:10

I'm similar age with sensitive skin. Like someone else said by this age we have most things we want so I always prefer useful presents or consumables. I like the 'faith in nature' make for soaps, shampoos ect, they don't use anything artificial in them or Lavera organic suit my skin, they do a lovely moisturizer in a round tin called all in one cream for about £9 which is even alright on my face and I'm allergic to a lot of things normally. Or does she have a hobby that you know off, I'm always glad of presents of yarn.

snowspider · 03/11/2022 18:18

When my dd's mother in law (my son in law's mum) in same age group was diagnosed with cancer I wanted to get her something and got a neom diffuser and oils, similarly I had never been to her house so a bit of a stab in the dark but she seemed to appreciate it.
