Gift for 62 year old lady…

Not my mom but someone I care for deeply.
She is a widow and had breast cancer herself a couple of years ago although (hopefully) fully recovered.

She is wonderful to me and my children and I want to buy her a gift. It’s usually just socks and chocolate but this year I want to treat her a bit more.

She doesn’t really drink, I know she likes to read crime thrillers, she has mentioned a few times about sensitive skin (chemo side affects) not really sure what she watches on TV or whether she has a DVD or not.

Any ideas?
I am rubbish at gift buying!

How about some nice skincare (maybe Liz Earle) and taking her out for afternoon tea?

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 20/11/2022 19:45

I'm 64. I would like a voucher from one of my favourite online plant suppliers (Crocus, Sarah Raven, Bluebell Nurseries); anything cashmere; champagne; charbonell and walker truffles (Marc de Champagne for preference); some really good quality running socks; tickets to see a comedian live. Thanks everyone.

nopuppiesallowed · 20/11/2022 19:47

Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest. Why not invite her for dinner and get to know her a bit better? Perhaps invite a couple of local people you think she might gel with as well. Sometimes people don't need more stuff - but new friends are always welcome.

WindyHedges · 20/11/2022 19:50

Well I’m 64 and I’m actually a normal human being. What would you like to receive as a special gift @ChakaKhanfan ? Chances are a normal woman of 62 (not a centenarian!!!) would like that too.

RosettaStormer · 20/11/2022 19:51

ChakaKhanfan · 03/11/2022 11:20

God I feel awful for describing her in such an old way. She really isn’t, I’m just realising I don’t know her that well, as wonderful as she is, she is my neighbour and we chat every day but I don’t know a great deal about her.
Certainly don’t know if she is techie or not. 😬

Anyway cheers, lots of good ideas!

Does she like gardening? If so buy her a plant but find out what she wants first.
How about something you've made? Chutney, a cake, jam?

WindyHedges · 20/11/2022 19:55

The punk generation never thought they would become delicate Victorian maiden aunts so soon.

indeed @CPL593H !!! I can remember doing the Twist to The Beatles in kindergarten and then a few years later arguing with my friends about whether the Stones or the Beatles were the best band in the world. That was before I fell in love with David Bowie and then actually got to meet Lou Reed.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 20/11/2022 20:12

I'm that sort of age and would hate a spa day, facial, candle or houseplant. My best presents last year were a pair of dungarees in my favourite colour and some earrings in the shape of my favourite dogs. But the idea I like the most is being taken out for tea or to the cinema or theatre. It's an occasion to have fun rather than more stuff, and especially not another bloody plant to keep alive

OxfordDog · 20/11/2022 20:56

If she likes reading Crime/Thriller fiction then i would recommend a great new release hardback called Marple. It's 12 new Miss Marple short stories written by current authors. £10 on Amazon and WHSmiths. I am getting it for a friend (40s) and my mum (60s). A recent release so she's unlikely to already have it. Would go nicely with some chocolates or a candle or whatever else you decide to buy.

Well at 62 is not that old !! I’m the same age , so why don’t you book tickets for your both to go to the theatre together to see a nice musical if you live in a city with a good theatre. Or how about taking her for a nice posh afternoon tea. Or how about a spa day out. As others have said cashmere jumper M&S do nice ones, or some silk pjs . I also like candles and diffusers from the white company.

This sounds ideal! I’d love this - I’m 62!

17caterpillars1mouse · 20/11/2022 22:05

I would go to a local book shop and choose two or three books then put it with a box of hotel chocolate. As a reader I would personally love that

Shall I report for goady-ness? Halloween Grin

(And I can spell ‘too’. Mortifying typo.)

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 20/11/2022 23:56

Aixellency I have no idea what you mean! ??? Goadyness? How???

HumourReplacementTherapy · 21/11/2022 00:13

At what age do we stop becoming WOMEN and start become an "X year old LADY"

I'm 2 years younger. I do yoga and weight training several times a week. I jog too. I ride a bike. I travel overseas in my campervan regularly. I drink lots of white wine. I love music. I saw Eminem when he performed at Twickenham about 5 years ago. I dance wildly to good music and stay up late doing so. I wear skinny jeans and Doc Martins.

Hope that helps.

Sorry. A LIE. I am two years later. Just re-read the OP post.

I'm nearly 62 and hate candles...love houseplants though, especially if they're in a beautiful cache pot. And special chocolates are always welcome.

Books are risky because if it's an author she likes, chances are she'll already have it. The same goes for anything hobby-related unless it's something that's consumed or wears out.

This is one of the reasons nice socks work as gifts, they do wear out and need replacing whereas scarves last decades.

HS1990 · 21/11/2022 00:33

A scarf bouquet maybe? Google it to see examples

As someone of similar age to your neighbour, this poster has mentioned all the things I’d like.

Jux · 21/11/2022 01:14

I'm 64. I have a dvd player/recorder, a cassette deck, a vynil deck (more than one - I have one which plays 78s). I have lots of old stuff and yet I stream netflix, prime and a number of other online streaming services. I was the first person I knew who used Tor, spotify, and a load of other stuff which disappeared, possibly when you were still at school!

These are things I would love:
Books, books and more books - book token or vouchers preferably, then I get the gift of the voucher and later ther gift of going to the bookshop and choosing the books....
A silk scarf
Silk-lined leather gloves
I would love to taste Ruby chocolate
Bath/shower things or a bar of really nice soap
A very pretty shrub or perennial in a nice pot that's big enough so I won't have to repot it for a couple of years; something that will always remind me of you, a friend gave me a beautiful little azalea which has been in the garden for years now and I smile every time I see it. It's called after my friend.

A day out with you would be lovely too.

I don't know your budget and some of those things can be pricey 😀 so do feel free to ignore.

AutumnCrow · 21/11/2022 01:36

Dammit @Jux you’ve just ruined my theory that no woman ever wants a scarf; they just get given them at Xmas.

YesThisIsMe · 21/11/2022 02:35

Silk pillowcases are quite a good shout for almost any non-vegan woman.

PaulGallico · 03/11/2022 11:07

@Mrsjayy totally understand that..but as a 62 year old myself I just get a bit tired of being represented as a really old person when I still work full time, have a social life an so on.

I agree. I'm nearly 60 and am fit, live in jeans & t shirts, have long hair and always on the go.

We're not all Miss Marple.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 21/11/2022 02:52

Heated throw

Outing for afternoon tea, wine tasting or pub

Felco pruners if she's a gardener ( Swiss, pricey)

Gardening magazines, stack of

Nice black leather gloves

Dry champagne

The websites below have some useful gift ideas.

Some are for someone actually going through chemo but there are things like skin balms.

I'm nearly 62..I'd love to be taken out for afternoon tea, but that's not because 60+ like afternoon tea though, it's to do with feeling special.

Give her an invitation card, arrange a date then book it. Pick her up, drop her off after. Personally, I would feel really really special.
