Would this a silly gift?

Thinking of ways to cut back a bit this year... My family (extended) love my homemade custard and I'm considering making a big batch of it, decanting into smaller containers and freezing it, then giving as a gift? Not just on its own obviously! But would that be an odd gift? My DSIS was telling me about her dessert the other day and she was about to heat a carton of Tesco own brand custard and said it's not a patch on your homemade stuff. So it got me thinking. Honest opinions please!

Yes please! I’d be very happy with this type of gift.

Medoca · 02/11/2022 16:27

It’s a bit odd. Personally I have no space in my freezer. Also the logistics of wrapping up some freezer bags of custard and transporting them (the paper would go a bit soggy with the condensation). Can you all do a secret Santa instead then you only have to buy one present. Or all agree no presents? That’s what I’ve done with some people this year.

TDoginHats · 02/11/2022 16:27

It's a no from me..our freezer is always rammed at Christmas.

UWhatNow · 02/11/2022 16:29

Ew no. Just give a token bottle of Merlot or a box of Lindt like normal people.

LightGreenDot · 02/11/2022 16:30

It's not a silly gift but I wonder about the practicalities of a frozen present... you can't really wrap it and put it under the tree.
If you are handing it over at a time you can get it from your freezer to theirs in good time, go for it!

CoffeeFanatic · 02/11/2022 16:30

Maybe a voucher for custard at a time of their choosing.

hairyunicorn · 02/11/2022 16:30

Yum, feel free to give me homemade custard anytime x

pastabakeonaplate · 02/11/2022 16:31

No

That's a sweet idea

SisterGeorgeMichael · 02/11/2022 16:32

I wouldn't have anywhere to store frozen custard.

itsgettingweird · 02/11/2022 16:32

Personally I LOVE something where someone has listened to what I've said over the year and given me a personal gift.

Money spent doesn't matter to me - but feeling like someone loves me enough to listen and act means the world.

And I would love homemade custard!

But the storage would be a nightmare. They'd un wrap it and then it would all be half defrosted

MilkToastHoney · 02/11/2022 16:33

I’d absolutely love this. What about a nice little jug to go with it?

Sprogonthetyne · 02/11/2022 16:33

I think it would be a logistic nightmare to keep it frozen. You would need take it out of your freezer, wrap it and get it to them within about half an hour, then they would have to leave straight away to take it home to their freezer. If someone is hosting they are not going to have the freezer capacity to keep multiple peoples custed gifts frozen, so most of it will defrost and go off.

skgnome · 02/11/2022 16:40

The logistics of a frozen gift would make me reconsider
however is a very thoughtful
if you’re planning on going round before Christmas and hand delivering, yes go for it
orherwise it’s really just the logistics of a frozen girt

donttalkaboutbookclub · 02/11/2022 16:44

Maybe you could give them a recipe for it with a (cheap) jug or some of the ingredients?

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 02/11/2022 16:44

Could you also do cake ingredients in a Mason jar to go with it? Dd made one for her siblings one year... Ribbons and a homemade tag and it looked great!

pastabakeonaplate · 02/11/2022 16:45

Father Christmas isn't going to know it needs to be in the freezer so it will just get left under the tree?

Frankensteinisamonster · 02/11/2022 16:52

I think uou know this is kinda weird, Im not sure many folks will go oh great, frozen custard.

can you make anything else. Like truffles, or other chocolates etc? Handmade stuff if you genuinely can do it well is often appreciated, but it tends to be more defendant stuff, I’m just not sure a jar of frozen custard falls into that category. I would have, course lie through my teeth tell you you made the best custard ever, it survived freezing and I loved it.

MyRiverThee · 02/11/2022 16:57

But would that be an odd gift?

Yes.

grayhairdontcare · 02/11/2022 17:27

I wouldn't and I wouldn't have any room for it at Christmas either

hattie43 · 02/11/2022 17:29

I'd find that a really weird gift unless it was part of a foodie hamper

Cococomelon · 02/11/2022 17:33

I wouldn't want it.

ghostsandpumpkinsalready · 02/11/2022 17:36

I'd love it if you wrapped me a nice mince pie to go with it 🤣
And I wouldn't care if I had no freezer space it would be eaten by the end of the day surely 🤷‍♀️

hopalongnowplease · 02/11/2022 17:37

Not for me thanks.

Without being harsh, it could also be one of those things someone mentions for years afterward or on MN when someone asks "what's the weirdest Christmas present you ever got"?
