Would this a silly gift?

Thinking of ways to cut back a bit this year... My family (extended) love my homemade custard and I'm considering making a big batch of it, decanting into smaller containers and freezing it, then giving as a gift? Not just on its own obviously! But would that be an odd gift? My DSIS was telling me about her dessert the other day and she was about to heat a carton of Tesco own brand custard and said it's not a patch on your homemade stuff. So it got me thinking. Honest opinions please!

Yes a bit weird, but if you had your heart set on it maybe give them the recipe printed on a tea towel or something similar and ingredients to make it themselves as a hamper.

Istolethecookies · 02/11/2022 17:40

I would be happy with that! I'm not sure how practical it is to gift frozen food though. My parents made hampers of homemade food one year and it went down really well! Although ended up being just as expensive as buying a gift.

DurhamDurham · 02/11/2022 17:42

I love custard, I wouldn't appreciate a frozen container of it.

threegoodthings · 02/11/2022 17:44

Love custard but doubt there'd be any room in our freezer for it, so no

NemoNotThatOne · 02/11/2022 17:45

I think the logistics will be a struggle, unless you all live next door to one another and have large freezers.

mollysmummyx · 02/11/2022 19:11

That'd do just nice in our house! It's a lovely idea I think x

Medoca · 02/11/2022 19:18

Yes, do the recipe idea. Much more practical, they don’t need to find storage space or unwrap a soggy present. Then they can make it whenever they want.

Theydoyaknow · 02/11/2022 19:18

God no.

mam0918 · 02/11/2022 19:29

No I would not want old custard.

Even if I liked the fresh stuff someone served at a dinner party etc... being given a lump of old frozen stuff is NOT the same.

I also don't like homemade food as gifts (allergies, no safety regulations, no nutritional info etc...) especially anything for non immediate consumption (I mean how long can I keep this random frozen mass safely?)... I can forsee the mold and taste the food poisoning.

fastandthecurious1 · 02/11/2022 19:32

I think a IOU for you to make them a big fresh batch when called upon is a lovely idea maybe bake a cake with it also? If you can :)

Frankensteinisamonster · 02/11/2022 20:08

I’m not sure to be honest I put a bowl of custard doesn’t really do it for me.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 02/11/2022 20:37

Thank God I didn't put this in AIBU Grin

I never even thought of the logistics! Yeah it's a silly idea so I won't do it, thanks for bringing me back to earth!

I really wouldn't want to receive something at Xmas that has to go in the fridge. There's never any room

Allthestarsabovemyhead · 02/11/2022 22:19

I don’t think it would taste as good when defrosted. Can we have your recipe though? :)

mondaytosunday · 02/11/2022 22:42

I hate custard but if you were making jam or chutney I'd be totally happy with that. My mil does those fruit shaped marzipan and usually gives me a box if those at Christmas- much more appreciated than some random box of smellies.

JaneJeffer · 03/11/2022 00:49

Send it to me. I love custard and I've got a huge freezer with loads of room for it.

YuliaJollyberry · 03/11/2022 01:03

I love custard, if the logistics worked between us I’d have room in the freezer as I’ve just taken loads out for Christmas Eve/day.

I’d much prefer a pretty ceramic jug from a charity shop with a hand written tag promising to come and fill it with custard and perhaps even teach me how to make it one afternoon.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 03/11/2022 01:11

Make a trifle! I love trifle. Make me a trifle. Grin

I think hand are gifts are a lovely idea. I would love more of them. I'd also love to be talented enough to make things to give to people.

kateandme · 03/11/2022 02:34

My sister always buys my dad food gifts.it’s not hard.when she arrives she just puts it in the fridge until Christmas Day and tells him not to open it.
I think it’s lovely. As long as it’s as good when it’s been frozen?
tou could make it into a little Kilner jar.

sashh · 03/11/2022 04:58

Could you bottle it?

I've given pickles and preserves as presents and they have been well received.

codehelp · 03/11/2022 05:29

Offer it as a gift anyway to your sister OP and see what she says Smile

pastabakeonaplate · 03/11/2022 06:20

A voucher for your sister who loves it and a nice jug or something would work.

As a business idea no, frozen custard isn't a great gift idea.

LesserKnownKardashian · 03/11/2022 06:24

Please can I have your recipe.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/11/2022 10:04

As a business idea no, frozen custard isn't a great gift idea GrinGrin yep, I get that now!

Custard is honestly one of the easiest things to make so please give it a go if you haven't tried before. The recipe I use is Delia's, tried it years ago and loved it so have followed that ever since!

6 large eggs yolks
570mls double cream
50g caster sugar (golden if you have it but I've often used regular)
1 dessert spoon of cornflour
1 dessert spoon of vanilla extract (the best quality you can get or you could scrape out a pod if you have one)

Put the cream in a saucepan over a low heat and in a mixing bowl whisk together all the other ingredients. When you see the cream just start to slightly bubble pour it into the mixing bowl and whisk thoroughly with all the ingredients, then immediately pour the whole lot back into the saucepan (scrape the bowl to get all the contents out) and continue to whisk it over a low heat. Keep doing this until it thickens, it might take 5 minutes of so. When it's done if you're not serving it straight away just cover it with clingfilm and then give it a good whisk when you're reheating. It always thaws & reheats perfectly for me when I freeze it (although I rarely have any left to freeze!)

I would love to receive this.
