Need gift inspiration for relative in 40's

TheGrinchWhoStoleChristmas · 01/11/2022 15:00

Got an auntie in her 40's who lives at the other end of the country from me. Needing gift ideas as inspiration has packed up and left for me.

Usual gifts have been pyjamas, luxury bath products, Jewellery, luxury chocolates, candles. I don't want to keep sending the same old things, so needing some inspo please.

Budget this year is around £50 - I have just had a baby so not got as much disposable as I would normally for her. She is the only relative in my life so I don't want to say to her that I'm not gifting this year due to cut backs etc....

Thanks :)

Really nice decoration for the Christmas tree? I am her age and I really like getting things like that - I don’t have to find room permanently and it reminds me of the person each year when I decorate the tree.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 01/11/2022 15:34

A cook book for a new style of food, and a selection of the more unusual herbs a spices used.

Books

Swarovski Christmas character

ProtectorExtraordinaryOfTheCantonsOfNim · 01/11/2022 18:03

Can you tell us a bit about her (rather than what kinds of presents you've bought her in the past)? What does she do for fun? How's her home decorated? Is she a reader? Does she cook? Any pet causes?

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 01/11/2022 20:03

Drink! (Said in a Father Jack style).

A decoration for the Christmas tree?!! What kind of lunacy is this? OP if you like your auntie at all please get her anything but that. I’m 50 and would much prefer anything from your usual list, or perfume, books, booze, nice make up, a theatre/panto ticket, a voucher for an afternoon tea/manicure/pedicure etc.

falllakes · 01/11/2022 20:27

I'm in my 40's and my MIL always gets me a Xmas tree decoration and I really like it.
Does your relative like Christmas?

HowledThisSongForWooooooo · 01/11/2022 20:56

@PinkSyCo I wouldn’t appreciate anything on your list! We’re all just making suggestions so no need to dismiss something as lunacy just because it’s not to your personal taste.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 01/11/2022 20:56

What dose she actually like though? Although those gifts are nice I’d probably regift most, in my 40s also.

If you can tell us what she’s into, likes, more about her we can give you better ideas.

This. So sad that all you have to say about her is that she's "in her 40s".

IScreamMonday · 01/11/2022 21:12

I really appreciate things I can use through the year like gallery/garden subscriptions.

But honestly, I think you need to look beyond age as I'm sure you know loads of people your own age who you have nothing in common with

SantaScribe · 01/11/2022 21:25

What does she like?

But I see this suggested so often on Mumsnet yet I can’t imagine anyone actually gifting someone such a boring, impersonal, unpractical gift in the real world.

SantaScribe · 01/11/2022 21:25

What does she like?

Nobody knows, hence she’ll probably end up with some Knick knack that will live in the attic for most of the year.

LynetteScavo · 01/11/2022 22:14

I'm
In my 40s and would hate to receive a Christmas tree decoration.

I like the same things as people in their 30s and 50s; book I'm interested in, quality scarf, gloves, hat- really nice mugs, a vase, a decent candle, an oodie, tickets to something I want to see. But all those things come with a crap versions.

LittleBrenda · 01/11/2022 22:14

It's no more boring than your trite list!

SisterGeorgeMichael · 01/11/2022 22:19

Mumsnet is just impossible at the moment.

Why can't people just suggest things without saying 'what kind of lunacy is this?' Just make different suggestions, you don't have to be a dick about what someone else likes.

So a Christmas tree decoration is more interesting/useful/fun than anything on my list? Okay.👌

SantaScribe · 01/11/2022 22:29

I like tree decorations.

I also like lots of other things that no doubt wouldn't interest many other people.

I'm in my 40s.

The point is we don't know what OPs aunt likes so it's impossible to say really.

Madcats · 01/11/2022 22:33

Just in case you are anywhere near Bath (or there is a similar local offering) if she is a reader:

Strawblue · 01/11/2022 22:43

Op you need to give more ideas of what your aunt likes in order to receive some useful ideas.

I’m also in my 40’s and would like to think that family don’t look at me and think what would a middle-aged woman want, rather than me as a person and what interests me. Personally, a Christmas tree decoration would not impress me, but then neither would a fancy candle which always seems to be recommended on threads.

lovelilies · 01/11/2022 23:05

I'm in my 40s

I'd like
Nice face cream
Cashmere socks
Olaplex no.3 (or any others)
A sliver ring
Earrings
A casserole
A new bath mat 😆

Dinoteeth · 01/11/2022 23:14

I'm in my 40s I'd like
Perfume
Small Handbag
Lego 😜

I'm so hard to buy for I know. But actually if she's your only relative that's probably the same the other way. Would she like to go for lunch or something with you?
