Ideas for new uni student

My Dd has just started uni. She is very happy and settled and says she has everything she needs. She never asks for anything, but anything your students of this kind of age have found useful or that they live in their room that we may just not have thought of. She has a MacBook, the usual phone and AirPods etc. doesn’t want a speaker as she doesn’t want to be a nuisance in the flat and is happy using her AirPods. It gets harder and harder as they get older!!!

Just posting for ideas too!

No DCs this age but if I was buying for a student I’d look at:

Make up
Nice toiletries
heated throw or weighted blanket
heated foot warmer
mini fridge for her bedroom
clip on desk/bed light
concert tickets

Very boring but could they use a dehumidifier in their room if they are in a student flat. Great for damp and warming a room up.

Maybe gift cards so she can go out and do things? Like starbucks or costa, wagamamas or whatever she enjoys? Clothes vouchers? Food vouchers? Amazon voucher she can spend on books but gives freedom to buy what she likes if she doesn't want books.

A hamper of lovely foodie bits to treat herself with would probably go down well, things like hot chocolate, indugent biscuits and such.

Nice bedding/pyjamas?

A stocking full of surprises?

Mystery stationery box?

Does she have any hobbies you can buy bits for or a voucher for an experience?

So far I'm buying my student dd a good chef's knife (she likes cooking and only bought cheapy knives to take), an instant puncture repair spray for her bike, & a book.

DD has mentioned how much she uses the Contigo insulated cup that I bought her before she left for taking coffee to lectures & to the study area.

Rocksalt lamp or fairy lights to make her room look cosy

Vouchers! along with nice bedding the one thing that's been a hit at christmas for my kids at Uni are vouchers to spend on groceries or toiletries later in the year. Ubereats, Boots, Nando's, coffee shop ones etc have been really well received.

Noise cancelling headphones :)

If she's cooking for herself, could you do a fun "trolley dash" style thing with her and let her chose foods to take with her?

Bookishish · 31/10/2022 11:42

Coffee machine or the dreaded velvetiser?

Was just wrestling with the same problem for DS. These have all been previous years presents.
He has way more money than me as he’s saved loads, has got a grant as well loan and isn’t sociable so vouchers no good.
He doesn’t drink alcohol, tea or coffee - drink of choice is tap water! Has endless water bottles of various kinds.
Loves tech but has as he builds computers he has everything already. Bought himself a 3 d printer, soldering kit, tools and has many headphones/microphones/keyboards etc.

He likes merino wool socks but I got him more recently.
I like the sharp knife idea. He loves Japanese and healthy food. Aside from that no idea.🙁

My daughter is getting an airfryer- she really misses our one at home!

elephantseal · 01/11/2022 06:36

Toastie maker
Smoothie maker
Push toiletries
Nice dressing gown
Costa vouchers
Meal out vouchers
Money
Perfume
Hamper of treaty food she might not be able to afford every week...

elephantseal · 01/11/2022 06:36

Ps you're not allowed mini fridges in DD's halls

lannistunut · 01/11/2022 06:39

I think it's great she doesn't want much. Last year I got my child who is same stage some really interesting food ingredients and a voucher for the cafe near to where he lives, plus the usual clothes and other bits.

jocktamsonsbairn · 01/11/2022 22:41

Last year I got dd:
Mini fridge - a make up one which has an led light up mirror front
A 'cuddle cushion' to make working from bed more comfortable
A laptop lap tray thing - again for working in bed
Vouchers for Greggs, U er eats and weatherspoons
Toasty machine
Big pack of 24 cans of diet coke (usually unaffordable)
The spicery kit - was something Mexican!
Personalised planner from Papier (see referral thread)
Toiletries to see her through next few months
Stationery
