Wrap as you go along or do it in big batches or on Christmas Eve?

I like to wrap once the decorations are up, and preferably the tree, so after the 12th December. I like to get the presents out and look at them regularly and consider if I'm done or if I want to buy some more. I like wrapping and love looking at all the nicely wrapped presents once they are done. I'm autistic and don't like opening presents but love giving to others and seeing them unwrap them.

What paper are you using this year? I've yet to buy any.

I do it in batches but only after I have bought everything so I can lay them out in bundles, check I have everything and turn on the Xmas music, candles and get started. Has to be in December aswell after the tree & dec's are up 🎅 🎄 🎁 and I always aim to have it all done before 22nd/23rd

Medoca · 21/10/2022 20:15

Christmas Eve for me! I love sitting down, listening to carols, with a glass of champagne, it’s a tradition here!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/10/2022 20:19

I do it in front of SPOTY.

Snugglemonkey · 21/10/2022 21:50

I do the wrapping after the tree is up in batches, once I have a whole family's presents bought. I wrap one present to DC from us for under the tree and Santa brings the rest. They go in the stocking, in a reusable gift sack, or just sit on the floor beside the sack and stocking. I make up a stocking for DP, but also have some wrapped things under the tree.

TokenGinger · 21/10/2022 21:59

I have wrapped in batches in the days leading up to Christmas previously, but like PP have said, it's made Christmas Eve really stressful where I'm up late wrapping and in the last two years, also building the bigger toys for DS.

DS is 3.5 this year and just about old enough to enjoy a pantomime, so I've booked one for Christmas Eve. With that in mind, I've been wrapping as I go so I know that come Christmas Eve, all will be sorted and we can go and enjoy the panto, come home for hot chocolate and bed ❤️

TokenGinger · 21/10/2022 22:01

Oh, and in terms of wrapping paper, I bought mine last year after Christmas. Morrisons had their 10m recyclable wrapping paper reduced to 50p and still in the 3 for 2 offer, so I got 6 rolls/60m for £2. It's brown paper and has Santa's face all over it, and I have brown paper tape that's recyclable so it can all just go straight into the recycling bin.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 21/10/2022 23:13

i used to wrap as I went along, then I’d forget what I’d brought and where I’d put it etc. Now I wait till I’ve got everything and usually do it a day I’m off and the kids are at school.

InvincibleInvisibility · 21/10/2022 23:23

I have a list of ideas for each person and tick it off when bought. The Dc both get the exact same number of presents.

Wrapping is done in batches in December. Brown Kraft paper with fabric ribbons - one colour per person. Wrapped presents go straight under tree (except stocking presents).

Have never ever confused what Im buying for whom, or found that I have an uneven number of presents cos I list them all beforehand.

FilthyforFirth · 21/10/2022 23:41

I would love to wrap as I go, but DH moans that they are harder to store. So I start buying in the summer and they sit there until December.

It is very frustrating!

I don't have that many to wrap nowadays but I do it in one big sitting when the decs are up.
I have a little tradition of being home alone, watching Christmas films at a little wrapping station (dining table or ironing board) and working my way through. I really enjoy wrapping presents though.

I use a mix of brown paper with ribbons, brown paper that I decorate with stamps and some recyclable patterned paper.
I like it if the presents don't match, not sure why but I think it looks nicer (but I also like coloured lights and lots of decorations so maybe tasteful isn't for me)! Xmas Grin

For the last few years I have given everyone matching paper- but I seen a picture of a tree with lots of different wrapping papers and it made me feel really Christmassy and nostalgic so I think I'm going to do that this year.

thaegumathteth · 22/10/2022 00:10

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I know it's probably obvious but it's on my mind now - what is SPOTY - ?? Of the year??

Pinkittens · 22/10/2022 00:17

Wrap 2 weeks before Christmas and put the presents in bin bags in the attic all ready to go.

Used to wrap on Christmas Eve in the early days, it seemed to take hours and we went to bed too late and a bit stressed when I'd rather have been enjoying a mince pie on the sofa and a Christmas movie.

I hadn't factored in waiting for the kids to go to sleep properly and not be wandering down too excited to sleep on Christmas Eve, so it was probably at least 10.30pm when we started. It was not magical or relaxing! Never again.

Passmethecrisps · 22/10/2022 00:17

I am a disaster. I order the vast majority from various online retailers. Unboxing them increases the risk of them being found and indemtified fso
for the most part I don’t even open the cardboard boxes.

rhis means Christmas Eve means opening 3748447 cardboard boxes, sorting which has actually been sent from various relatives foR us to wrap, what we have bought for relatives for us to wrap and then what comes from Santa versus us.

havinf said all this we have it down to a fine art and are largely done by 1. Some booze and Christmas telly helps.

Pinkittens · 22/10/2022 00:25

Also I get one type of paper from Santa (usually a cheap 10m roll) then a different coloured paper for each DC so I can identify them easily when setting them out on Christmas Eve. Gift bags for adult presents.

Cazs818 · 22/10/2022 00:25

I wrap as I go place in sacks and pop in the loft , wrapping paper etc is all brought in Jan sales , when tree comes down then a few presents will go under , majority comes back down Xmas Eve

im normally done and dusted by October , hate last minute panicking and a huge expense I tend to spread it throughout the year , also like to spent time on Christmas activities with the kiddos , making things , baking ingredients , visits to Santa etc instead of rushing around like a loony

AlternativelyWired · 22/10/2022 00:49

I end up with things in various places and Christmas Eve is a nightmare having to bring things out of hiding and put them in the living room. We live in a town house and the stairs are creaky plus there's only me doing everything so I'm up, down, up down, up down the creaky stairs with rustling presents. It's hard work and I've no one to watch out for the dc waking up. This year I need a better plan. I think the ground floor spare room closet is going to come in handy this year. At least as they get older the gifts get physically smaller.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I know it's probably obvious but it's on my mind now - what is SPOTY - ?? Of the year??

Sports personality of the year.

We tend to wrap one evening in December once the children are in bed. We have a birthday mid Dec as well so it feels good to have everything organised and birthday stuff wrapped in birthday paper. This year our spare room is occupied by mil so it's slightly awkward as I normally shove presents into the spare wardrobe. Not bought anything yet apart from stocking fillers so not thought about it!

thaegumathteth · 22/10/2022 01:36

Of course! Thank you!

MayFlower22 · 22/10/2022 01:38

I use reusable foil bags from amazon

NegroniLover · 22/10/2022 11:11

I wrap in one batch in December once the tree is up so they can go under it. Never ever on Christmas eve though

TheChosenTwo · 22/10/2022 11:12

I love wrapping! I don’t do my shopping until the first weekend of December, get it all done in one fell swoop - make the list on the Friday night, out at the shops on the Saturday and then Sunday I do all the online bits. I shop for about 50 people, I would be easy to let this task span a massive range of time but I refuse to let it take over my life so I’ll dedicate a couple of days to it and No more.
I wrap in a few goes over the next week or two, and then leave a little bit of time on Christmas Eve for the last bits that get panic bought 😂
I just sit on the floor of the front room, usually one of my dds will help (I don’t really like this as they aren’t as neat as me but I appreciate the help!).

Rainbowshit · 22/10/2022 13:09

KnottyKnitting · 21/10/2022 13:27

We made the mistake of wrapping on Christmas Eve once when my DDs were small. We were at it for hours after they had gone to bed and it really spoilt Christmas Eve. Always just wrap as I go now.

Yep same here. Made this mistake once and never again.

The kids didn't go to sleep until past midnight, DH and I both had horrible flu and we were awake until 3am. Oh and we ran out of sellotape.

Never never again. It's all done in large batches well in advance of Christmas Eve.

Illbeready · 22/10/2022 13:10

I saw this thread this morning and have made a start on wrapping lol.

AlternativelyWired · 22/10/2022 13:17

Where do you keep it all once wrapped?

OP posts:
BadgerLovesMash · 22/10/2022 13:17

In big batches once the tree and decorations are up. Can usually get it all wrapped in 3/4 sessions. My mum often has the girls for a day, I do one day while they are still at school and then a few evenings. I like to stick on a christmas film and eat chocolates while i do it!
