Wrap as you go along or do it in big batches or on Christmas Eve?

I like to wrap once the decorations are up, and preferably the tree, so after the 12th December. I like to get the presents out and look at them regularly and consider if I'm done or if I want to buy some more. I like wrapping and love looking at all the nicely wrapped presents once they are done. I'm autistic and don't like opening presents but love giving to others and seeing them unwrap them.

What paper are you using this year? I've yet to buy any.

I will wrap in batches, but I also like to get it out and look at it all Blush

I will probably start in November sometime. I have left it all to Christmas Eve before and it was mayhem & never again.

I ordered my paper today, the gingerbread man one is my favourite.

I wrap nothing.

Why do people wrap Christmas presents?

It's fun?

thaegumathteth · 21/10/2022 18:53

I like to do it once the decorations are up in a few batches. Used to do it in evenings when kids were little and went to bed at a reasonable time. Now it's trickier so do it on weekends etc.

JurassicShay · 21/10/2022 18:56

@AlternativelyWired it was a bargain at £3.50 I think for a 22 metre roll.
It was only today that I got all the presents out and looked again 🤣 I have an app that it's all tracked in but I still like to look.

Wrapping everything on Christmas Eve is another one of those things I've only ever heard about on MN.

Why on earth would you? Everything wrapped as it is bought and under the tree. Usually a few presents for family we are not seeing on the day and exchanging early with anyway so would need to be done earlier.

My mum always wrapped on Xmas eve and I can still remember even now how stressed she'd be every year and I'd lie in bed panicking she wouldn't get it done or that she'd be up when Santa came and I wouldn't get anything 😂

@JurassicShay be aware studio paper is usually only 60cm wide

JurassicShay · 21/10/2022 19:03

@thaegumathteth ohh I didn't think to check how wide it is. Never mind, I'll buy more if it's needed.

thaegumathteth · 21/10/2022 19:03

I only know because I did the same thing!

Nadal · 21/10/2022 19:11

I always mean to wrap as I go but it rarely happens unfortunately

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/10/2022 19:11

I used to end up frantically wrapping at midnight on Christmas Eve.

No longer! I do it in batches, well before the day as far as poss. Trying to remember where I hid everything is the problem now.

@PaisleyP

Is the magical appearance of toys under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning not surprise enough?

Never did that either or heard of it real life. I thought it was something that only happened in films. Everything except stockings goes under the tree as soon as it's bought and wrapped.

EstellaRijnveld · 21/10/2022 19:13

Once I've finished buying for one person, I will wrap and tag ready to put away. If I leave it for one mammoth session then I can't confused and accidentally label the gift with the wrong tag.

TheGhostOfLiz · 21/10/2022 19:15

As I go.

I would hate to do them all in one lot - too tedious. Plus, it seems so sad to see the wrapping torn off just a few hours after I put it on Smile

SuziLikeSuziQ · 21/10/2022 19:25

I wrap all in one go after the tree is up, so usually the second weekend in December. I have a glass or two of wine and put on a festive film, often just something on iplayer. One year it was the festive classic 'Black Death'!

I wrap in fabric, though, so it's fairly quick as you don't have to faff with sellotape. Just tags to write and I love having a pile of finished presents!

Mind you, with 5 immediate family birthdays in December, too, I have to do as much as I can quickly or I'd spend all bloomin' month wrapping stuff.

ThreeRingCircus · 21/10/2022 19:30

I wrap in a couple of big sessions but in early or mid December. Storing presents unwrapped is a lot easier IMO plus I have all my shopping done by November so I can enjoy wrapping when the tree is up and I'm feeling more festive.

That said though, I don't buy loads of presents and I am lazy so make life as easy for myself as possible. All DDs stocking presents are either unwrapped or in red and white striped sweetshop bags that I bulk bought from Amazon and told them they were candy cane themed and from Father Christmas as they're different to any of our other wrapping. Present in bag, fold over top and tape....done!

I also use gift bags a lot as they're so much easier, especially if things are an awkward shape. I keep any that I'm given for reusing the following year.

But otherwise, I wrap in one or two sessions but well before Christmas Eve.

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/10/2022 19:37

I wrap a couple of weeks before. When the DC were little it used to be when DH took them to his work Christmas party but they are mostly adults now so I just do it when they are at work and school. There's not as much to wrap this year as they are each having one present to unwrap and a stocking. The stocking fillers are wrapped in tissue paper and everything else is wrapped in whatever Christmas paper I've got although I still use a different paper for each DC. I could probably do it all in an evening and there may be 🍾

Rocklobstershell · 21/10/2022 19:37

I do in one or two big sessions when the toddler is asleep - I have to have it all out in front of me too to make visually make sure all 3 DC’s all get approximately the same amount of things to open!

HumphreysCorner · 21/10/2022 19:40

Wrap as you go if you can. Last Christmas I ended up in the caravan manically wrapping every night with a glass of wine x

Fairislefandango · 21/10/2022 19:44

I wrap nothing. Why do people wrap Christmas presents?

Because that's what you do with Christmas presents? Otherwise you might as well just let Amazon dump them on the doorstep and let people open the brown cardboard packages from whoever.

I buy presents from about Mid-november.

Why do people wrap Christmas presents?

I didn't have wrapped Christmas presents from my parents as a child/teenager. It was the norm but now I wrap the gifts I give. Mind you my mum used to invite her auntie for Christmas and she wrapped her gifts but then saved you the bother of unwrapping it by saying "it's slippers/a nightie/a wash bag". The best of both worlds 😂

Myleakycauldron · 21/10/2022 19:52

I wrap in batches throughout December but still end up wrapping a bit on Christmas Eve - I love the idea of wrapping being festive but after a couple of presents it's just tedious!

Fascinated by people using an ironing board to set up a wrapping station - someone please tell me more!

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/10/2022 19:56

@Myleakycauldron you can set the ironing board at any height that suits. Either down low if you are sitting down or higher up if you prefer standing. More adaptable than a table or the floor.

I still wrap on the floor 🤦🏻‍♀️

troppibambini6 · 21/10/2022 20:03

I wait til I've got everything. I need to check out exactly what the kids have got and see their piles.
Then I usually do it over a few days. My rule is it's done before they break up from school.

AnnapurnaSanctuary · 21/10/2022 20:05

DH and I wrap together on Christmas Eve (except the ones that need to be posted in advance obvs). We use reusable fabric.
