We do secret Santa in our family so not many gifts to purchase for the adults, but I always love thinking about and planning gifts for my (6yo) DS, really thinking about what he would like and be interested in.

Below are some ideas I have had for main gifts so far and why.

  • dance mat (plugs into tv and you follow instructions, exercise and fun)
  • coding robot (he has starting coding at school and also thought it would be good as it’s a STEM gift)
  • tiny tendo (he has a Nintendo switch which he loves and thought this might be a cool different thing, perfect for long journeys etc)
  • giant jenga (not only can we play the game but make things with the blocks)
  • Mentos and Coke (to do the experiment where the Coke explodes which he’s always wanted to do- science)
  • Sentence dominoes (fun but educational)
  • One of the Smart Games (he already has the red riding hood one and it’s a great logic game)
  • Playmobil rocket (he has the mars research vehicle already)
  • New switch game (I know some people are against video games but DS has gained a lot from certain games- logic, reading, creativity etc)
  • Childrens weights (he always seems interested in other peoples weights and I thought it might be a Healthy thing although will have to look into it more)
  • roller racer (saw one at soft play and thought it would be a cool outside toy, he struggles with his bike but loves his scooter)
  • board game (I have been looking at ‘fire in the hole’ started on kickstarter, good for family fun, or ‘think words’)
  • Playmobil Viking set (he’s into how to train your dragon and has a couple of those)
  • Multiplication board (like a Melissa and doug one for doing times tables)
  • Galt toy lab (he already has a few but I’m looking at the magnetic lab and the glow lab)
  • V tech kiddi camera (he loves taking photos on my phone, maybe it will spark some creativity?)

He will probably get a mixture of a couple of larger gifts and then the usual books, new trainers etc
please share ideas for your 6yo!

Geomag
Screwball scramble
Vtech marble rush
Den building kit
Magic Marvin glow art pad
T shirt from Illuminated Apparel
Stomp rocket

AlwaysLuigi · 21/10/2022 09:31

I’ve actually got the magic art pad and screwball scramble on his Amazon wish list (handy for keeping ideas in one place even if I don’t always buy off Amazon)
I used to love screwball scramble as a kid

Ive thought of something else, DS loves doing what he calls ‘domino rally’ where he puts the dominos up and knocks them down. His dominos are poor quality though and struggle to stand so wanted to get him some better ones, also maybe with a little machine to stand them up? We had one when we were kids but I don’t remember how good it was!

Gu yitzu (sp?) Robot, fluffy blanket

AlwaysLuigi · 21/10/2022 11:10

My DS loves goo jit zu 😂 imo they’re overpriced but they get played with ALL the time!

Thanks OP, I've got DDs 6th birthday this month as well as trying to think of Xmas presents! I'm furiously making notes as I've had no ideas!

She did seem to like the look of the game being advertised on TV where there's a layer of sand and you pull out supports below and hope your game piece doesn't fall (can't remember what it's called!) but other than that I'm stuck for ideas!

Kinetic Sand Sink'n'Sand! It's a great game.

AlwaysLuigi · 21/10/2022 14:08

That game sounds great, I’m going to take a look!
@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut i always come to threads like these for inspiration so hope it might give others some!

Other things on the 6 year olds list here are Aquabeads, Moon Shoes, anything Harry Potter, costumes, colour changing things and craft sets.

AlwaysLuigi · 21/10/2022 18:10

I had moon shoes on my list for his bday in the summer but didn’t get them in the end, I got him a flybar foam pogo stick instead!

@AlwaysLuigi which coding robot are you going for? I'm trying to decide!

Dramateacher1 · 23/10/2022 13:31

The coding robot is a great idea. Does anyone already have one they can recommend? Or let me know which one you’re thinking about getting?
my 6 year old son will be getting some Lego sets, a couple of switch games, lots of Harry Potter things and the set of how to train your dragon books. I’m not sure what else right now…

Neednewfloor · 23/10/2022 15:36

I'm getting my nephew a small foosball table

Dreamwhisper · 23/10/2022 16:09

Heelys Trainers
VTECH Magic Lights 3d Peg Box (it's like a pixel art board that lights up)
Kiwi Crate box - one off or subscription!
Slime making kit
Baking Supplies hamper with a couple of those science experiment themed cupcake kits
My boy will be 5 but I'll be getting him the Kinetic Sand sandy land
For the stocking - sensory toys from Amazon or similar
Sea Monkeys
Mario LEGO

Dreamwhisper · 23/10/2022 16:09

Oh also Orchard Games are really good for this age :)

Number109 · 23/10/2022 16:15

My 6 year old wants a craft box and we’re going to get her spirograph.

AlwaysLuigi · 23/10/2022 21:15

@CaptainMum this is the one I’ve seen

Learning Resources Botley the Coding Robot 2.0 Activity Set, Programming Robot for Kids, STEM Toys, Early Coding, Programming Games for Kids, 78 Pieces, Age 5+ amzn.eu/d/0DM5KjR

I like the brand learning resources. But to be honest I’m kind of going in blind! I’m think DH might be able to have some input in it but we haven’t got that far yet . Has anyone else got any suggestions?

@Dreamwhisper is that light box like a lite brite? I always wanted one as a child but never had one. So a few years ago I bought one for DS and I’ve never looked back!

I like the heelys idea and the foosball table too

Hi all,
Anybody have any experience of the Toni boxes?
Im considering one ad a joint gift for DD6 and DS2.

TIA
🙂

CaptainMum · 24/10/2022 13:38

@TickTockBaby
We have the Yoto player and it is brilliant. Used daily by 5 & 3 yr olds. It's similar to the Tonie, but far more versatile and economical.

Thanks for that! Had a quick look and think i prefer it, as my main concern with the toni box was storing the figures but the yoto cards would be much easier 👍

AlwaysLuigi · 24/10/2022 18:56

We have a tonie box and my DS loves it. Listens to it every night before bed. No experience with the yoto player but I think either would be a great gift!
