Theme: all gifts exchanged need to be under £10

As a group of family / friends (there are over 20 of us) we have decided this year that all gifts exchanged have to be under a tenner.

There is often a theme to the Christmas exchange: last year we only bought gifts for the under 21s; year before only comestibles; previous years the budget has been greater etc etc.

From baby to Grandma of 80+, please hit me with your bargain buys, novelty factor also has a value!

Thank you ☺️

Jigsaws. The Works sell loads from ones for babies up to 1000 piece ones. Generally around a fiver.

For £10 I would be tempted to scour charity shops tbh.
Some ideas:
Oxfam bookshops near me often have virtually unused cooker books (have bought Nigella ones for £5)
Collection of cocktails in a can for older teens (usually 3 for £5)
The Ordinary is a very good skincare brand that is not expensive - plenty under £10
Games like Dobble would work - good for families or kids
Luxurious bubble bath - £10 would buy something really nice
Costa gift card always a bonus
If you know them well and what they need - a lot of kitchen stuff comes in under £10, such as measuring spoon sets, spatula, colander, chopping board - not glam but I (for example) would love some new silcone spatulas

So if there’s 20 people in the group - is everyone is going to buy & get given 19 x £10 gifts?

I don’t understand why you would do that?

I’d either do a Secret Santa for the £190 and get a very nice present each or don’t bother.

No one wants or needs 19 x £10 stuff

I agree

id rather buy myself something for £190 and not have the tAt!

Needmorelego · 19/10/2022 19:10

@Butterflyfluff actually I'd prefer 19 different presents. There isn't really anything specific that costs almost £200 that I want. Pretty much everything I love to receive is things that are usually under a tenner. I like getting books, chocolates, crafty things, Lego, bubble bath. I am sure the OPs family have discussed this.

Given the OP is asking for ideas they presumably don’t know what each of the 19 people would like.

19 items is a lot to potentially get wrong 😂

You could also buy the cheaper stuff that adds up to £190. It does t have to be one item...

Needmorelego · 19/10/2022 19:30

@Butterflyfluff that's true. That's why in my family we do wish lists.

Totally with you on that

Asking strangers what your family might like - for 19 different people - at £10 a present - is unlikely to have a high success rate 😂

MahMahMahMahCorona · 19/10/2022 19:42

We have discussed this and we know each other very well, as someone upthread has said, we know one of us is in need of new kitchen utensils, and kitchen storage boxes, so we are each buying different items of the same brand. Another needs new champagne flutes so there are a few clubbing together to get a dozen.

I was simply asking for some further ideas - and I appreciate very much the suggestions and links - thank you!

Plus the ideas are useful for other people looking for sub £10 gifts eg for work or family secret Santa. Whatever anyone else thinks of the idea, the OP and family have agreed this is what they are doing so please could we focus on constructive suggestions please?

I once received a 35cl bottle of gin and a couple of different fever tree tonics as a secret Santa. Much enjoyed and zero waste!

I'd also appreciate plants or a selection of biscuits/crackers more expensive than I'd usually buy.

I've bought serving platters for under £10 from TK Maxx / Homesense
TK Maxx also often has some lovely jewellery around this price.

10 scratch cards.
But I really don’t know why not do a secret Santa, all these small gifts seems very wasteful. I’d much prefer a decent £100 gift

YuliaJollyberry · 21/10/2022 09:51

I’d like the smaller gifts rather than a bigger secret Santa one, bit of festive fun if everyone’s together when exchanging and thought went into the gifts so it’s not wasteful.

With this years budget theme I’d get all 19 a variation on a similar thing and try to stick to useable and consumable.

Perhaps a beverage container paired with a beverage and possibly an edible tailored to individual likes and interests. So a nice tea cup and saucer with tea ball strainer and loose tea, a glass latte cup and biscotti, novelty jokey mugs with teabags and biccies, thermos flask and soup packets, cafetière with ground coffee, engraved pint glass with fancy can of beer, character mug with hot choc sachets for children, sippy cup with organic baby rusk or teether toy for baby. Mini teapot and gin. Don’t think your budget will stretch to a mini bottle of champagne with champagne glasses, maybe wine glass charms.

Or I’d buy everyone a pair of novelty or nice socks tailored to their individual likes or hobbies and shove 1 sock in the bottom of the other and add consumable bits they like either edible or pamper things. For baby the socks will be small so put with cute outfit or buy a pair of rattle socks, character socks with small character toy for younger children.

Or maybe I’d get everyone some nice-ish shower gel or soap with facecloths/bath puffs or bath bombs and bath toys for children and baby.

Lovemusic33 · 21/10/2022 11:19

So each person is buying 19 gifts (£190) I wonder how much of that will actually get used and how much ends up in landfill?

why not do a secret Santa and set the price at £30/£40 so each person gets a nice useable gift?

Needmorelego · 21/10/2022 11:51

@Lovemusic33 if everyone does wish lists then everything will be wanted wouldn't it?

Needmorelego · 21/10/2022 11:54

@Lovemusic33 something doesn't have to cost £30 or £40 to be 'useable'. There's is loads and loads I would love to receive and would use for under a tenner.

Lovemusic33 · 21/10/2022 12:11

I’m not sure I could think of 19 gifts under £10 that I would want?

Yes a wish list would be helpful but I would rather receive one nice gift rather than 19 gifts under £10. Every year I receive gifts that I won’t/can’t use even from people who have asked me what I would like (and have then bought the wrong thing). I just find the whole gift giving thing a bit tedious, yes it’s great for kids if it’s things they will use but as an adult I would rather not have lots of gifts.

Needmorelego · 21/10/2022 12:45

@Lovemusic33 gosh I could write a list of about 100 things that people could treat me too that are under a tenner....
Books
More books
A whole load of Lego books currently on offer in Smith's
Lego Polybags
A whole load of the Lego sets that are under a tenner
Novelty tree decorations
Nicer bubble bath that the 79p stuff I normally buy.
Nicer chocolates than I would normally get.
Posher versions of soft drinks I like
Coffee shop voucher
Craft bits and bobs
A couple of magazines I wouldn't normally get.....

I won't list all 100 🙂
Is there really nothing that costs under a tenner that you would want? Not even a paperback book?

travellingfamily · 21/10/2022 13:07

If you club together, eg your suggestion with champagne glasses, you could get magazine subscriptions (3 months from one person, 3 months from another). Or similarly annual passes to somewhere.

Not really 😬 I’m not really a book person unless it’s a information/reference book and most of the ones I want are more than £10. I have sensitive skin and there’s not many beauty products under £10 that I can use. Maybe I’m just fussy. I would much rather a voucher than a gift unless it’s something I have specifically asked for. I am going to ask my mum to get me a one of those long hot water bottles, she’s awful for buying me tag that I never use, I would rather she asked me what I wanted. Every year I ask her not to buy me food but she doesn’t listen and buys me a load of stuff I won’t eat.
