Cheaper than Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate?

IhearyouClemFandango · 18/10/2022 21:09

I have bought a second hand velvetiser for a fair price and am now looking for some chocolate to try it out with 😁

I'll probably get some of the real stuff for Christmas time proper, but has anyone tried anything good?

I make my own instant hot choc powder but am thinking something not powder based would be better.

pendragondrinks.co.uk

These do cheaper alternatives but are still chocolate flakes. I don't think they are as good as hotel chocolat as you can see the added sugar in the packet but more superior than powdered chocolate.

I often pick up short dated pouches of Hotel Chocolat hot chocolate in store. Sometimes they are only £2 ish.
Not sure you’re meant to use powdered chocolate in them.

mynameiscalypso · 18/10/2022 21:13

Powder based hot chocolate is still great in a velvetiser. I use Whittards usually as I'm not a big fan of HC. Alternatively, you can just grate some chocolate

Landlubber2019 · 18/10/2022 21:16

My dh bought me loads of different types of chocolate flakes with my velvetiser, honestly though, I much prefer using Cadburys hot chocolate and using the flakes on the top 😃

Zwicky · 18/10/2022 21:16

I use the pendragon ones but I agree with @VanillaImpulse . Not quite as good as HC but much better than powder.

MomwasCasual · 18/10/2022 21:17

I buy one from Barry Callebaut on Amazon that is lovely.

Although having said that, I'm not sure how it compares price wise to HC! I think it works out cheaper because it's a very large size.

declutteringmymind · 18/10/2022 21:17

M&S do some but not sure if it any cheaper.

Can you grate some nice chocolate?

icelollycraving · 18/10/2022 21:19

Sephra Belgian Hot Drinking... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071X4VMTW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I order this one. I gave up buying HC ones as too expensive.

Tesco had some chocolate flakes with their hot chocolates the other week. Wish I had picked some up to try

aliasname · 18/10/2022 21:26

Another vote for Pendragon - and they do loads of flavours

Midnights · 18/10/2022 21:30

To be honest - if you have any chocolate bar you can grate it and it'll work! A flake crumbled in, or a ripple is a fab treat and less faff to grate 😊

Magn · 18/10/2022 21:38

I get the ones in Waitrose, they have a nice selection and anything with a high cocoa content and low sugar content will do. Charbonnel and walker are always good but there's one in a box that looks like a house that edges it. Pretty sure it's cupsmiths.

Nice ideas, thanks everyone!

Go into the HC stores rather than buy online, and they sell short date hot chocolate for 70% off but it keeps for ages 👍

IhearyouClemFandango · 18/10/2022 21:47

Ah, I live on an Island...I don't think we have one here sadly!

I love my velvetier but use it less than people think.
I'm currently using up chocolate that i was given for Christmas that expired in March/ April time.

Tastes fine!

lannistunut · 19/10/2022 13:12

M&S had nice-looking real chocolate flakes on sale when I was there this week.

Magn · 19/10/2022 16:40

Just had a Lakeland catalogue and they have several options. Don't forget your 20% off voucher, some on the Christmas bargain thread if required.

blusteryshowersaway · 19/10/2022 18:36

I got a tub of Lindt/Lindor at our local garden centre for £4.99 today. Hopefully it tastes as good as their chocolates.

dawnfromgavinandstacey · 19/10/2022 18:54

I got some fry's hot chocolate powder maybe form b and m and it's lush

dawnfromgavinandstacey · 19/10/2022 18:55

Sometimes I just put Lindt balls in hot chocolate.

any flavour will do

Be careful with the Tesco Finest flakes if you're using in a Velvetiser! The flakes are huge so got stuck in our Velvetiser whisk and made a horrendous noise - had to resort to a pan in the end. Wondering if I can get away with taking a rolling pin to the bag to crush them a bit more before trying again.

I bought these with the last shop.... highly recommend!

mamabluestar · 21/10/2022 16:27

I bought my daughter the Aldi Velvetiser supe last year. She wasn't keen on the HC hot choc but liked it from Whittards

Floralnomad · 21/10/2022 16:31

I only liked one of the HC chocolate sachets , we use all sorts in ours , my daughter likes the Nesquick one and that works fine
