How will your tree be decorated this year?

Interested to hear how everyone will be decorating their trees for Christmas. We have always gone for the traditional red, green and gold but somehow all my decorations were accidentally thrown out this year when we've been renovating and clearing things out so I'm starting from scratch. I've replaced them for now with a bunch of random colours as I just couldn't decide what to go for so looking for some inspiration before I buy any more! What colour schemes do you go for and do you always have the same or do you change it each year? We have a main tree in the living room and a pencil tree in the dining room so need to decide if they should match or go for different schemes on each.

I am boring and have had the same decorations for over 30 yrs though I do add a bauble or two each year.
My christmas decorations are like old friends to me and I gave no desire to.change them now or ever tbh. I am a v sentimental person !

@flapjackfairy me too!

mine is decorated in 53 years worth of memories. Mostly red/silver/white/black (standard Christmas ornaments) multi colour traditional filiment fairy lights and a pink Christmas Angel Doll - she's older than me! On the top.

Not at all 'designed' or 'co ordinated' but full of memories & love 🎁 🎄

Tree 1 - multi coloured with decorations I have collected over the years from loads of places.

Tree 2 - silver and white decorations.

Tree 3 - jewel coloured decorations like peacocks.

Tree 4 - new this year and I’m going for rustic woody type decorations.

Tree 5 - in DD’s bedroom, she has collected her own decorations. It’s quite a ‘girly’ tree.

Tree 6 - in DS’s bedroom, mostly his childhood decorations. As he is a teen he will pretend not be arsed about it.

Then there are the outside trees …………..

I may have a problem.

That sounds like an amazing problem to me!

same as the past 30 years really. We buy a decoration from every place we visit during the year and if we do a new activity we'd buy something to signify that too (so a skate the year they started skating lessons, a boat the year they started to sail). Every decoration tells a story to me

I have to say this method always confuses me because you have to have lived a life to pick up decorations from places you visit/new activities. So in the years proceeding 30 years do you just have a tiny tree or a sparsely decorated one?

@boxybox I can't answer for everyone, of course, but for me at the beginning there was more tinsel, & plain red baubles the tinsel got replaced by decorations & now I could easily decorate 3 tress!

I could do with getting rid of quite a lot if it, BUT, I'm too sentimental!!

We have a vague theme of an enchanted forest. Each year we add one or two more decorations to our collection. We have woodland creatures like foxes, mice and badgers carrying baskets of Christmas puddings or logs for a fire. Bronze and gold pinecones, red and gold baubles fill the gaps and a tartan ribbon winds down the tree.

It won't be everyone's cup of tea but it makes me feel so cosy!

That’s beautiful .

Fullsomefrenchie · 28/09/2022 21:21

We live in an old listed building. Our main tree is very traditional to fit with its setting. Red and gold, gold baubles, little red bows. Our other tree is more multi coloured , both with warm white lights. We also have large wreaths we put over the fire places, and a garland for the stairs.

inappropriateraspberry · 28/09/2022 21:26

With the decorations that are in the loft and a few I got cheap after last Xmas that are in the garage.
I don't put exactly the same on each year, but don't really think about it until I'm doing it, which will be a week or so into December.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 28/09/2022 21:31

I’m getting a new tree this year but will be using the colours I’ve used the last 2 years, rose gold, gold & pink mainly. I will just get more decs to go with this theme. Previously my main colours were black, silver & blues for about 20 years. I still have all these. I collect Christmas decorations when travelling, most of my tree decorations have a story or meaning behind them. I also put up multiple trees, the main tree (mine) stays mine and done nicely but I let the DCs have their own plus themed trees, over the years these have grown. It’s one of the reasons I keep decorations as they can be used on different trees. We have a Star Wars themed one that goes up most years, but also others, An Elf one went down well last year, Harry Potter, Frozen (Elsa & Anna), random chuck anything on, kitchen (food themed) one and this year I’m looking at a grinch themed one. We moved this year and pulled a lot of things out of storage, we now have a big tub of McDonalds soft toys that will make a fun toy tree, the dcs are looking forward to doing this. I let my DCs decorate my main one with barbie dolls a few years ago for a couple of weeks before I decorated it myself, it was a hit with the primary school kids who have to pass our house to get to school 😆

I also use random things as decorations that others might find strange, kinder egg toys and as I said McDonald’s toys ( well before they went plastic free) They’d have hanging loops to hang on things, they are great for the themed trees.

Annigolden · 28/09/2022 21:34

I’m not a fan of heavily curated trees. I too just stick on a load of old ones. I top up with some new ones each year. I also have some fab vintage ones. There’s no theme to it.

Figmentofimagination · 28/09/2022 21:36

2 trees. Our tree themes are fun and lots of colour with decorations that mean something to us.

Front room is my tree. I call it my Mardi Gras Disney tree. Orange and purple lights, alternating multicoloured tinsel (bright pink/green/turquoise/silver and bright pink/turquoise/gold), lots of glass baubles, Masquerade masks, decorations from our holidays and Disney decorations with Tinkerbell on the top. Every year a few decorations get added to it. This year I already have about 7 new decorations to add to it as we went to Disney World in Feb 😂

Conservatory is DS's tree. It's multicoloured Disney. Multicoloured lights, Mickey Mouse tinsel and baubles, the old shatterproof baubles that we bought for our first tree 11 years ago, Christmas tree chocolates and a new decoration or two that my DS picks out each year (a yellow stegosaurus, Spider-Man, Buzz Lightyear, the toy batgirl he got in his happy meal).

Same as always, the overall look is a bit Scandinavian but it's just lots of decorations bought over the years not intentionally themed.

RosesAndHellebores · 28/09/2022 21:45

By the men who deliver the Christmas trees. Plain creamy white lights. Red and gold baubles. Grannie's fairy on the drawing room, star in the family room. They also put green stuff over the fireplaces and the main bannister. Have a twiggy shit tree in the dining room with lights.

Sometimes I buy spice filled bags and rest them on the tops of radiators forna Christmassy smell. They used to be fab; not so much recently.

ohhelldoi · 28/09/2022 21:45

Last year we had just finished decorating the sitting room on 23rd Dec so I didn't do a tree, I did have fairy lights, loads of baubles in vases, candles etc so it still felt "Christmasy"

The relief of not having to do a tree was huge!
I fiddle for days trying to get the tree right, it annoys me so much that I can't get it perfect, every time I walk past I'm moving something, it bugs me so much that I can't wait to get it down again grrr..........so I have decided that this year I am going simple (I would never have a tree again if it was up to me but family insisting as apparently it's not Christmas without a tree Hmm)

Im having a real tree with warm white lights and nothing else - possibly my lovely old fairy on the top (if her wings stay on). Simple, smells good, not much can go wrong, no faffing about - I will chop it up for firewood so no waste - no fiddling for me! Christmas tree made easy Grin

MrsMontyD · 28/09/2022 21:47

I may buy new lights this year, it's the first year DP will be living with us, his tree is much more colourful than mine so I'm thinking as a concession I'll get a set of lights with more bulbs as he finds mine a bit too subtle. I've had them at least 12 years and they will be used elsewhere in the house. They'll still be soft white as the baby Jesus intended.

SnowJamz · 28/09/2022 21:51

@Minimalme Your tree is so beautiful! I want one! 😁

WhatIsThisPlease · 28/09/2022 20:16

I always have a really Norway spruce, very traditional with mostly white baubles and decorations and lots of lights. A couple of years ago my dad gave me all his old decorations, the gaudy 1970s ones I remember from my childhood. I'm going to use them and have a retro tree this year!

I bought some old style 70s/80s baubles last year in a charity shop, not enough to do a full tree but I’m hoping to build on them, they brought back so many good memories from my childhood.

mondaytosunday · 28/09/2022 22:06

Ours is everything but the kitchen sink. I have decs on there from when I was a kid (I'm 60), and decs my kids made, and for some reason I have become a depository for peoples' decs when they don't bother with a tree anymore, so I've got some from four other people.
Plus my parents travelled a lot and would pick up decorations. So I have straw Ángels from Mexico, yarn dolls from Peru, I bought some delft pottery ones from Amsterdam, a red glass chili from New Mexico...
I have to confess that Christmas decorations make up the bulk of my storage unit. In my old (much bigger) house we had two trees, plus I used to decorate a tree in our holiday flat (now let out), so I have loads.
I'd be devastated if they got thrown out!

recklessgran · 28/09/2022 22:15

No idea. We've just decorated our sitting room in blush pink and navy. It looks fabulous but OMG I didn't think about my tree decs which are mainly red, gold and glass. Crumbs. And all the Christmas cushions and throws, again mainly red. There's no way I can put the red in there but equally I won't be parting with the decorations which like others have been collected over many years and have huge sentimental value. It looks as though I'll be buying quite a few new baubles this year. I'll probably stick to silver and white to go along with all the crystal and clear glass ones I already have.. We''ll see but I guess I'll keep them and bear it in mind next time we decorate which probably won't be for another 5 years.

LittleSid · 28/09/2022 22:17

Battery powered lights, tea lights in the Yule log and whatever didn't break/get thrown out last year. Reuse and recycle where possible.

HereIfYouNeedMe · 28/09/2022 22:28

Decorations from my childhood that have been added to over the years. Love getting them out every year, I always forget what I have especially new ones DH has bought me. 4 sets of coloured lights. I've bought new beads though! I use those instead of tinsel on a 8ft tree

sanityisamyth · 28/09/2022 22:30

Badly.

fairtrauchled · 28/09/2022 22:40

Our tree doesn't have a colour theme.I think of it as a tree of memories.I have decorations from when I was a child and others that have been gifted to us over the years. I also like to bring back a decoration from holidays if possible ,be that in the UK or overseas.

Nagado · 29/09/2022 07:07

Our tree is quite... retro.

I have coloured lights with the plastic petals around the bulbs, 70s style, and red, gold and green tinsel. Baubles are a mixture of tatty old things handed down from my Nan to my mum to me, expensive glass and cheap but pretty glittery bits we’ve accrued over the years. Lots of birds too, which has been accidental. Then I chuck red, gold and silver lametta over it.

Nothing matches and there’s no theme, but if Slade were to decorate a tree, it would look like mine.

Ima90sbaby · 29/09/2022 09:20

I am a Christmas tree snob and I hate it whenever anyone touches my tree, me and DH have always ended up arguing when he tries to "help" decorate the tree! 🤣🤣 I have red and silver baubles and snowflakes and the chuck on tinsel rather than normal tinsel, etc on the tree, with white lights.Last year I bought our 6 month old (at the time, will be 18 months this year) his own little Christmas tree and baubles for his bedroom, with the intention of this being one that he can decorate himself in years to come. I had thought and planned to buy new decorations for this year as we were hoping to be moved into our new house, which is not happening now due to all the interest rates and everything :(. Starting this year I want to start a tradition where my dc pick a bauble each year from a Christmas Market which we can hang on the tree 🥰
