How will your tree be decorated this year?

Interested to hear how everyone will be decorating their trees for Christmas. We have always gone for the traditional red, green and gold but somehow all my decorations were accidentally thrown out this year when we've been renovating and clearing things out so I'm starting from scratch. I've replaced them for now with a bunch of random colours as I just couldn't decide what to go for so looking for some inspiration before I buy any more! What colour schemes do you go for and do you always have the same or do you change it each year? We have a main tree in the living room and a pencil tree in the dining room so need to decide if they should match or go for different schemes on each.

We go for the "throw any old shite and hope the cat doesn't climb it" look.

😂😂😂 Both the dog and cat have had the tree over at my house so we now have a "baubles that have survived" look.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 28/09/2022 19:17

Open the box and sling it on. Anything is fine as long as I don't have to buy new bits of crap.

Burnt0utMum · 28/09/2022 19:21

This has definitely inspired me to go for the 'anything goes' look at least for the main tree. I do love the vintage look so will see if I can achieve that.

We have vintage decorations collected over the years, I love the old Czech glass baubles. All different colours and proper fairy lights - no LED ones. DH bought me a set of Pifco vintage Cinderella lights last year which are gorgeous.
I don't like the perfect themed tree look tbh.

boxybox · 28/09/2022 19:25

same as the past 30 years really. We buy a decoration from every place we visit during the year and if we do a new activity we'd buy something to signify that too (so a skate the year they started skating lessons, a boat the year they started to sail). Every decoration tells a story to me

I have to say this method always confuses me because you have to have lived a life to pick up decorations from places you visit/new activities. So in the years proceeding 30 years do you just have a tiny tree or a sparsely decorated one?

MuddyBoo · 28/09/2022 19:25

We have a vague theme of an enchanted forest. Each year we add one or two more decorations to our collection. We have woodland creatures like foxes, mice and badgers carrying baskets of Christmas puddings or logs for a fire. Bronze and gold pinecones, red and gold baubles fill the gaps and a tartan ribbon winds down the tree.

It won't be everyone's cup of tea but it makes me feel so cosy!

Mine is generally colourful & a mis mash. Lots of old Krebs & Woolworths ones stolen from my mum, a load of glass 2nd hand ones. Every year I spend far too much in Liberty, John Lewis & Paperchase on new ones.

3peassuit · 28/09/2022 19:31

For the first time in decades, I’m not hosting Christmas this year. I’m getting a small natural tree and just putting on some clear lights. I’m passing on 40 years worth of assorted baubles and elf crap to the DCs.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 28/09/2022 19:34

We have white and silver decorations - white lights, silver tinsel, silver baubles, snowflakes etc.

EekThreek · 28/09/2022 19:39

I came here ready to say "the same as every year you loon", expecting this to be a thread about changing decorations every year. But ouch, you have my sympathies - we add a couple of new trinkets every year on the same theme of white and red with a bit of green, some of them have real significance and I'd be gutted if our box of decs got lost.

In your shoes I'd start again with your original theme - I'd be worried about it not feeling like Christmas if the tree looked too different (bonkers I know).

thaegumathteth · 28/09/2022 19:51

Our tree in the living room is coloured lights and all the things the kids have made / collected over the years.

BUT this year I also have a second living room and in it I'm having a 8ft slim tree with grey and red gonks on it and little crystal hanging baubles and white lights which the cats will destroy

Lemonyfuckit · 28/09/2022 19:56

Same as every year - surely people don't buy a whole new set of decorations each year? We have red silver and gold and clear glass, with white fairy lights, no tinsel. Have always aimed for a 'scandi' look and add the odd decoration when see a nice one in various places we have visited on holidays.

caringcarer · 28/09/2022 20:00

I am a Xmas tree bauble snob. I will put up the same decorations as last year. I have many very expensive hand blown glass baubles. I bought a one new one each year. Mostly red, purples and gold. I bought one every year for each DC. Last year DS moved into own home and says he got loads of compliments on his expensive tree decorations.

aryanna · 28/09/2022 20:05

Our core colours are the classic red, green and gold, but we also include decorations of a variety of other colours! I think this looks really cosy and I can keep adding to my tree whilst keeping the decorations I've had for years 🎄

WhatIsThisPlease · 28/09/2022 20:16

I always have a really Norway spruce, very traditional with mostly white baubles and decorations and lots of lights. A couple of years ago my dad gave me all his old decorations, the gaudy 1970s ones I remember from my childhood. I'm going to use them and have a retro tree this year!

bluesky45 · 28/09/2022 20:24

We have 2 trees. The one in the family kitchen diner has mainly red and white baubles, quite kid friendly, mostly non breakable. The DC pick a decoration each for this tree. The one in the living room is green, gold and burgundy. I pick a new decoration for this tree each year and more of these ones are breakable. The colours on each tree stay the same each year.

Verbena87 · 28/09/2022 20:27

A mixture, but mostly fairly traditional colours (red/green/gold/white). However, not all traditional decorations - got a glorious glittery crocodile bauble from Liberty a few years ago, and a few other silly/ridiculous/joyful bits.

probably accessorised with actual icicles this year if the cost of living carries on as is

141mum · 28/09/2022 20:29

Candy cane lane theme

Floralnomad · 28/09/2022 20:32

Main tree is anything and everything , second tree is a very organised red / gold / green with all baubles the same size .

Ponderingwindow · 28/09/2022 20:33

Almost all our tree decorations are sentimental. We would never be able to do a theme. I’ve thought about a second tree, but I do enough other decorating.

GuyFawkesDay · 28/09/2022 20:34

We have the "Christmas puked on my tree" look.

It's mostly scandi/rustic style but there's all sorts of shite the kids have made, insisted on buying, godawful things with their names on. It's all memories and joy.

I'm even going back to coloured lights this year. I feel like I need as much simple joy as I can muster in scary and uncertain times

declutteringmymind · 28/09/2022 20:44

Same as last year

MyLifeNow20 · 28/09/2022 20:57

I have rose gold/ pinky type decorations, I love it.
This year though I have inherited my Granny's xmas tree, she passed away in feb (Its an M&S one with lights and baubles etc included) and I think I will use it to remember her x

MrsJamieDornan · 28/09/2022 21:01

FourChimneys · 28/09/2022 17:48

Adult DC and partner will probably arrive on Christmas Eve, put the tree up and then coo over all the decorations which are about 30 years old. Any attempt to change or modernise things would be met with huge resistance.

I know someone who puts playgroup-made toilet roll fairy on the tree each year. Made by her DS who is now 28 😂

I have a loo roll angel my DC19 made at nursery and it still goes up every year and I always put it right at the front. It's one of my favourite decorations.

2pinkginsplease · 28/09/2022 21:01

We bought a 7ft tree for our living room and our children get a new Christmas decoration each year (our tradition) and the rest of the tree is decorated with white lights and silver tinsel and round baubles.

it’s a bit of a miss match due to 2 new decorations each year but I love it.
