What did you get your DCs for their first Christmas

Looking for inspiration and ideas.

Our DD will be 8 months at Christmas.

Ideally we would like to give her something special she can keep / use for a long time.

Budget fairly flexible as we will just do one big gift and a stocking for her.

What did you gift your DCs for their first Christmas?

We didn't get anything special in a memorabilia kind of way, other than a tree decoration.

Instead we got toys that DS would grow into, like megablocks and a ride on toy. Grandparents got happyland. DS is 3 soon and all of them are still in use

A nice but also very cuddly (Steiff) teddy bear - to be her main teddy, and happily she has ended up loving it and sleeps with him every night. Also a really nice illustrated book of nursery rhymes - both kind of keepsake but also practical presents. Then some small bits and pieces that were more age appropriate books and toys (she was 3 months)

A tree decoration with their name on, still like seeing them now and they are all teenagers!. We didn't buy any actual presents as was pointless as had been given lots of second hand stuff.
We did wrap up their favourite toys instead of buying stocking stuff, when they had older siblings Was always cute seeing them excited about seeing their toy!

One of those walker things with wooden bricks in it

mondaytosunday · 22/09/2022 08:42

I think a toy or two but that's it. He was five months and it was just for us to acknowledge he was there rather than anything else. The following year he was much more into it all at almost 18 months
Don't see a point of 'baby's first Christmas' ornaments- they are pretty cheesy.

Perfect28 · 22/09/2022 08:42

Nothing, they won't remember and I had already spent the best part of a year buying everything they need. Plus they get spoiled by others.

SuperCamp · 22/09/2022 08:47

A simple chunky wooden xylophone.

Not memorable, but DD really enjoyed .... a bucket of clothes pegs. She was obsessed by them whenever I was hanging the washing, so she got her own personal supply

A ballpit, it's still used 2 years later

Loads of stuff, I always go big at xmas.

Trying to remember:

My oldest was 13 years ago and hes a new year baby so was nearly a year old, most stuff was charity shop finds and the only thing I really remember was a life sized bob the builder teddy but he also got a baby drumkit and all sorts - we didnt have routine back then so where just winging it.

My middle child was only 2 months at xmas so harder as he didnt do anything or understand much, I know he got loads of stuff but I cant really remember what I think there was the counting kitty, an electronic micky mouse teddy, scout bear and stuff like that. (The next year at 14 months old he got a trampoline and slide as the big gifts which I remember.)

My youngest was 6 months at xmas and go an activity desk plus things like a rag doll, light projector, the gund penguin, rattles etc...

mam0918 · 22/09/2022 10:04

Oh thats it my middle child got a ball pit... how could I forget that lol, should have read the comments to jog my mind before posting.

psuedocream3 · 22/09/2022 10:09

My yougest got a jumperoo, and clothes, bibs, dummies, teething toys as he was a few months. He will be one this year and I've bought him a wheelybug, nursery times crinkle newspaper, and a b.toys music set. I'm stuck for ideas so it'll probably just be clothes as we have loads of toys already.

My toddler got a lot of lamaze toys for her first christmas, a few months old, as there was 75% off at boots so she had the whole collection.

Rocking horse

ChillyB · 22/09/2022 10:46

If money is not an issue I’d get a pikler triangle with a slide, or a swing for the garden if you’ve got one (you can get swings that “grow” with the child too so good investment).

Otherwise I’d look for sensory and stacking toys, anything that can be set off to crawl after too.

My son was three months at his first Christmas and he got sensory toys, clothes and books. I also got him the Raymond Briggs Father Christmas book and it comes out every year on Christmas Eve now.

I got him a triclimb and slide for his 1st birthday and the swing for his next Christmas. These are still in use and he’s now 4.

DS1 had sit and ride tractor he could push himself around on. DD had baby walker with blocks in. DS2 had Fisher Price activity table.

A Winnie the Pooh dressed as Santa
A Sophie the giraffe
A bag of buttons for her first taste of chocolate
Christmas onesie
A Christmas bauble for the tree with her name on it

ALittleBitSkeksis · 22/09/2022 11:09

Oh and a beautifully illustrated copy of The Night Before Christmas, which I wrote a special note inside, and we still read it every Christmas Eve.

GlobetrottingPercy · 22/09/2022 11:10

DS was 10 months, we got him a trike and a ball pit, I still remember the pain of queuing for the Aldi website and hoping the ball pits were still in stock! Still very much used now and I hope for years to come.

Love this idea

He's 17 now, and in a recent clear out told me to put it somewhere safe for him.

ShabbyNat · 22/09/2022 20:15

We got a bucket of bricks from the early learning centre, that were coulorful & all different shapes

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/09/2022 20:19

A Fisher Price farm. It was a favourite for ages until we donated it to the local toy library when he was 8 and hadn't touched it for 3 years.

containsnuts · 22/09/2022 20:27

Not much. I got DD at 7 months a feely/sensory book and a box of music toys and shakers. She loved it!

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 22/09/2022 21:36

DD was 6 months at her first Xmas. Someone bought her similar to these. She used them for years until they literally fell apart. Loved them. I'm planning on buying them for friends ds this year.

Ball pit. A year later (nearly!) It's one of our most used toys and older kids love it too when they come over.
