What do children use alexas for?

We don't have any alexas, but I imagine my DC (8,6) would love them.

We have prime music. Could they each play music in their own rooms?

What else do similar aged children use them for?

OP posts:
Dannexe · 21/09/2022 15:26

Mine are older but use them for streaming music, as alarm clocks, for reminders and as house intercoms (this is the reason we bought them)

mumonthehill · 21/09/2022 15:28

Audio books here as well as music. Really well used in our house. Ds loves his

YoSofi · 21/09/2022 15:28

My daughter (7) loves hers.

She plays music on it, asks questions about things she’s learning at school, she plays games on it, 21 questions is her current favourite and she makes it fart 🙄

Lolly86 · 21/09/2022 15:29

Music, audiblebooks, reminders, silly games, announcements etc we love ours

baxtersm · 21/09/2022 15:30

Alexa tell me a joke

karmakameleon · 21/09/2022 15:30

Timers so everyone gets exactly the same Nintendo time

TooMinty · 21/09/2022 15:30

Playing music, setting timers (mainly for brushing teeth), asking questions, Beano skill, animal noises, jokes, fart sounds...

TooMinty · 21/09/2022 15:31

Getting the kitchen Alexa to ask me for a snack!

FrankTheThunderbird · 21/09/2022 15:34

My DC are teens. But niblings (ages 5-9) mainly ask Alexa for jokes, or to fart Hmm

OneFrenchEgg · 21/09/2022 15:35

I don't think you can have music playing on two at the same time.

Dannexe · 21/09/2022 15:39

You can have music playing on two at the same time. You can do play everywhere which plays the same song everywhere or you can play different music on different alexas. If you can’t then it will be to do with your Amazon music/Spotify subscription

BlooberryBiskits · 21/09/2022 15:41

As above plus phoning grandma /aunts - quite useful actually

sanityisamyth · 21/09/2022 15:42

Timers
Alarm clock
Audiobooks
Harry Potter quiz
Reminders to brush teeth, charge watch etc
Calling my mobile or dropping in on my echo

blebbleb · 21/09/2022 15:44

My 2 year old keeps shouting "Alexa Stop" it's so cute. Or "Alexa play baby shark" 😆

ChalkHeartsMelting · 21/09/2022 15:44

All the above but I use the ones in their rooms to call them down for dinner.

OneFrenchEgg · 21/09/2022 15:55

We have one prime subscription and can only play music on one device - if I ask it to play in a room when someone else already has it going it won't play two separate songs at the same time.

gogohmm · 21/09/2022 15:58

We can play Spotify on 2 different devices because we have a duo account. Dsd's is on her own account which means unfortunately I can't use it to call her for dinner

OneFrenchEgg · 21/09/2022 15:58

Just checked - we have Prime which includes Music but we don't have Music Unlimited with Amazon, so one device only. I don't want to pay for music on top.

Multi room app for music is about fifteen quid, a must if you don't want to listen to the same song on repeat for hours.

Silly quizzes and sound effects

"Dropping in" to the alexas in other rooms to find me and complain about the cat/ask for snack/where's my green hoodie etc

Call me on my phone if I'm at work and his dad has said he needs to tidy up his room and he feels this is unfair

Sleep sounds app at bedtime

Audible (requires a subscription)

Alarms/timers/routines and control smart lights (afraid of dark, can control hall and bathroom lights)

Podcasts (free lots of apps)

Emmelina · 21/09/2022 16:20

Mine are a bit older, but use theirs for music, alarm clocks, games, house intercom. Doing quick calculations. (Alexa what’s-x-)
it took a long time to get “Alexa who farted?” And “Alexa, meow” out of their systems I will say Grin

Greydogs123 · 21/09/2022 16:24

My dd listens to podcasts and I use it to call her down from her room without shouting! It also controls a lanp she has that isn’t easy to reach.

Is that the £14.99 family plan so you can have different songs streaming? Setting up multi room is free; you just group the devices.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 21/09/2022 16:40

Everything listed above. Seeing my youngest finally crack Alexa play baby shark was priceless.

Stag82 · 21/09/2022 16:42

Mine both have them, one inherited as we had surplus once dp moved in!

they tend to play music on them and Alexa play fart noises (for a small fee she will even fart you happy bday!)

UpdateStoleMyProfile · 21/09/2022 17:18

Intercoms. As a calculator or encyclopaedia. To play music and tell jokes and send silly announcements to the rest of the house. To create shopping lists or birthday lists. Christmas countdown. Birthday countdown. Timers and alarm clocks and reminders.

we have some smart lightbulbs so they can turn lights on and off from their beds, I can also turn my younger child’s on or off from my room which is handy if they wake and need a nightlight. I also love the fact that when we are rushing to leave the house I can shout “Alexa, all lights off!” as we leave and not come back hours later to lights burning in bedrooms all day long.

Kids take a message from Alexa about bedtime much better than they do one from me too.

older child likes to find recipes, sort out conversions from cups to grams, play trivia quizzes, get Alexa to sing songs about dogs…
