Are we the only parents who don't do Christmas Eve boxes?

we have just never bothered, something else for me to think about too!

They've never questioned why they don't get one. They weren't even a thing a few years ago right?

I was Christmas shopping today (I know, early but I don't often get much chance to shop mid week when kids are at school). The cashier picked up on me buying for Christmas and was chatting nicely, she says oh well you give your kids a Christmas Eve box yeah? Just her assuming that all kdis have one. She meant well but I am questioning myself now.

I was like no we don't!

we tend to visit family on Christmas Eve and gifts are exchanged and sometimes opened early (from family). We always have take away on Christmas Eve!

that is our tradition.

we have an elf on the shelf but we do it our own way. Sometimes I wish I never started though.

we also don't bother with the whole matching PJ thing.

we tend to just do things our way without following any fads! That's okay, right?

Nope. No American OTT here.

User56785 · 21/09/2022 19:04

If it makes you feel any better, we do none of that extra stuff,

I don't there is any need to make her feel any better.

mynameischloe · 21/09/2022 19:04

We don't do them either. The excitement is the very fact that it's Christmas Eve because of the feeling, not because they get a box full of stuff. Don't do elf on the bloody shelf either. And we don't do these crazy expensive advent calendars either, they get a chocolate one for a £1. I do wonder if the cost of living will make a difference to all this extra stuff just for the sake of it.

SpotlessMind88 · 21/09/2022 19:11

When i was a kid we never did matching pj's, xmas eve boxes or elf on a shelf but yet xmas was the best time of the year. I only found out about them on Etsy when i was looking for xmas ideas for my first born. She will be 2 soon and i started the tradition of the xmas eve box, matching pj's, and also sprinkling reindeer food and leaving milk and cookies for santa. I love xmas and want her to have these traditions to remember.

hewouldwouldnthe · 21/09/2022 19:13

Just another money grabbing idea. No i don't

slipperfsce · 21/09/2022 19:14

Tbh they confuse me, why new xmas pjs for the end of Christmas? also lots of dvd talk but we stream everything. 😆

PacificOcean · 21/09/2022 19:15

Complete waste of money IMO. You don't need extra "stuff" to make Christmas Eve special - it's exciting just by being the night before Christmas!

slipperfsce · 21/09/2022 19:16

Admittedly I have been bullied into elf on the shelf, however due to my lack of organisation/laziness he often arrives very late & goes missing for a few days. One yr his mate came instead as he was lost. th

Alwayswonderedwhy · 21/09/2022 19:16

I'd never heard of them until seeing them in FB. I don't know anyone in real life that does them.
I think it's probably popular with the same type of people that have gender reveals, baby showers etc.

ShandaLear · 21/09/2022 19:18

Nope. They get a Cadburys advent calendar each though. That’s plenty.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/09/2022 19:20

How do people know all of their friends Christmas traditions? I have absolutely no idea how my friends spend their Christmases beyond the odd photo.

(Apart from the Elf as we took some pictures at the "North Pole" aka the ski resort the Pyrenees for them)

DomesticBlisters · 21/09/2022 19:21

We do a Christmas Eve box, a December box, we have an elf who plays hide and seek (isn't naughty though) matching pjs, advent calendars the whole lot and I bloody love it!

The Christmas Eve box is just a wooden crate and most of the things that go in are reused every year, it's mostly just a box to hold it all plus some popcorn and snacks to eat while they watch a movie before bed.

December box has festive snacks for everyone to enjoy throughout December. So basically the contents of the Christmas cupboard and our new pjs and advent calendars.

Some of us weren't lucky enough to have Christmas traditions growing up and we need to make our own.

You said you when you meant I 👍

Airymanning · 21/09/2022 19:27

We don't. No magic lost.

QuillBill · 21/09/2022 19:28

Pretty sure my teen don't even know what a DVD is.

NanaNelly · 21/09/2022 19:32

I don’t do boxes, elf on the shelf or Christmas stockings.

Its not american it started in Scandanavia lol.

mam0918 · 21/09/2022 19:42

My favorite posts are the people that proudly say 'We dont do a xmas eve box, we just...' and the proceed to write the tradition of a xmas eve box that they do lol.

People get mighty hung up on the word 'box'... it doesnt matter if you actually use a box or not its just a handy way to contain it lol.

StopStreet · 21/09/2022 19:47

In reply to your query about the coolness, they're deriding you because they think you posted in faux naivete rather than genuine concern. This is because every year there are threads putting down people who have Christmas eve boxes. So some people think you posed this question to make yourself look superior.
I'm sorry. I'm autistic too.

Oh I’m a cool one too! No box, no creepy elf, no new pyjamas for the sake of it.

^Me too

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/09/2022 20:05

I've never done them. I've never really understood it.

Nidan2Sandan · 21/09/2022 20:49

Never done it. We have a wicked basket that appears around 6PM on xmas eve and it has PJs for the kids in. Not xmas themed ones, just their PJs for the next year.

We would never do the cute matching PJs thing, as DH doesn't wear them anyway 😁

It's just a small thing some people have made part of their tradition.

A bit like, you might always have done... Mushroom Soup for starters, or your Dad always gets a box of chocolate brazils, or your kids always do the Christmas lighs switch on, or you but a new decoration each year... Or whatever. There's nothing to "understand"....

Lol yeah... "we send the kids up for a bath with a new bath bomb/bubbles, and we all get in our new PJs, break open the gingerbread house and eat it watching a film we watch every year. But none of this was in a box! So it's absolutely definitely not the same thing...."
