Christmas book for 9 year old

Does anyone have any recommendations for a Christmas book for a 9 year old (almost 10)?

Always put a Christmas book in the Christmas Eve box but it’s getting harder!! She already has a goosebumps Christmas book, and the Christmas pig books by jk Rowling.

she is a confident reader so can manage most things, just has to be age appropriate (ish, I’m not super strict!)

Tom fletcher the christmasaurus and the naughty list

NoDairyNoProblem · 17/09/2022 22:01

I second the Christmasaurus books - however they are great to read in the lead upto Christmas. DD was begging to squeeze in extra chapters before school last December.

UniversalTruth · 17/09/2022 22:04

I came on to say Christmasaurus too! Also Terry Pratchett's Christmas short stories book.

NauseousNancy · 17/09/2022 22:40

Just checked her bookshelf and she has the Christmasaurus ones too! So many books.

she doesn’t have the terry pratchett one so having a look at it.

What about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?

Desperado40 · 18/09/2022 08:28

I have 2 good ones for you, my daughter enjoyed both! The Christmas Carrolls by Mel Taylor-Bessent and Hetty Feather's Christmas by Jacqueline Wilson.

Oh, something else to thing about! We've had Christmas Pig, Christmasaurus and A boy Called Christmas over the past few years. A secret Unicorn series also has some wintery stories. I also need something for a 10 year old.

This.

Or some other Christmassy books - The Dark is rising ; The Box of Delights ; actually, sort of, Harry Potter!

The Christmas Cat by Robert Westall

Taytotots · 18/09/2022 10:35

The story of Holly and Ivy (Rumer Godden). I love 'The dark is rising' as mentioned above but my kids weren't into it last time I tried. Will try again this year though. 'The children if Green Knowe' is also Christmassy - lots of snow and cosy fires.

A boy called Christmas by Matt Haig is a lovely book.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 18/09/2022 10:40

The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder. It has one chapter for each day of advent.

Ageneralsenseofproundconcern · 18/09/2022 10:41

Michael morpurgo the best Christmas present in the world. I cry like a baby every single time but it's really good.

Where Snow Angels Go: - by Maggie O’Farrell is lovely. amzn.eu/d/8qvxX79

A boy called Christmas by Matt Haig. It's the first of a trilogy.

This is a lovely book. My DD (9) is getting the third book in the trilogy in her Christmas Eve box, it's probably a little young for her in terms of reading ability but I think she'll enjoy it as she loved the other two.

Thisisthelifewevebeengiven · 18/09/2022 15:35

The night I met Father Christmas by Ben Miller is a really good one. We read it as a family when mine were aged 10 and 7.

Also agree with a boy called Christmas, we did that one last year (which was great Cos we watched the film after too)

Christmassaurus are good too, and I see there's a new one coming out before this year too.

GettingStuffed · 19/09/2022 07:26

I loved The Lord of the rings at that age, but the Hobbit is more a children's book.

LaTangerina · 19/09/2022 15:52

There's a Tom Gates Advent calender I've bought for my daughter, unsure how Christmasy it is though. It was half price on Amazon & A3 size.

SummerLightning · 19/09/2022 16:05

Not a Christmas book specifically but I love the Christmas scenes in all the morrigan crow books if she hasn't read them.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 19/09/2022 16:10

Jenny Pearson has a Christmas one just recently out. She is a fabulously funny author who manages to write about big emotions perfectly for children. Not read the Christmas one yet but it will be on the Christmas book pile for my youngest. Unless he spots it while shopping and makes me buy it first.

Tracy Beaker Christmas Book (“Starring Tracy Beaker”)
“The Fairy Doll” by Rumer Godden

“The Battle for Christmas” by Jeremy Strong

“Invasion of the Christmas Puddings” by Jeremy Strong

I enjoyed having “A Christmas Carol” read to me at that age (don’t think I read it myself until I was a bit older) but was already familiar with it thanks to the Muppet version!

Little Women might be nice too? Or possibly next year. Not a Christmas book as such but the opening is so lovely and is gloriously festive! “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents…”

Perhaps not for a 9 year old (might work best for younger or older), but this glorious Night Before Christmas Pop up book is 40% off on Amazon. It’s beautiful - all grown ups I’ve shown it to are completely blown away, more like an art book than a childrens book (tho mine, 4 and 2, do love it). The Amazon pictures don’t do it justice The Night Before Christmas (Pop-up book) amzn.eu/d/e6RqbTn
