What were hit presents for your preteen girls this year?

DD is 8, nearly 9, and got:
Harry Potter Lego
Books
Glitter backpack
Puzzles and games, including HP Dobble, GravityMaze and Harry Potter games and puzzles

Light up indoor mini drone
Stationery
Instax camera
Skateboard from grandparents
HP chocolate, stocking bits, a couple of soft toys, mechanical hamster in a ball.

The one thing she apparently wanted that she didn’t get was a kids’ Fitbit (though if she had told us she wanted one at any point that might have helped 🤣)

Hits: the Lego, the mechanical hamster, the stocking things, the Harry Potter stuff, the stationery

Misses: she’s a bit lukewarm on the instax camera - annoying as a kids’ Fitbit would have been cheaper!!!

I’m looking for ideas for what your 8, 9, 10, 11 year old girls got and which presents were hits or misses - for ideas for DD’s upcoming birthday and for next year!

What went down well - or conversely didn’t - with your girls?

We got dd a driving lesson (have to be ten). Not had it yet but was a hit at the time.

The2Omicronnies · 01/01/2022 21:43

Please tell me where you got the mechanical hamster in a ball from?! My daughter received one in her stocking and it simply didn’t work, no matter what we tried. I assumed it was just faulty. Amazon had mistakenly sent me a duplicate which they said they did not want back, and that had the exact same issues 🤦‍♀️

Sorry, totally off topic there. In response to your actual question, the biggest successes with my daughter was a huge box of second hand Shopkins (all thoroughly cleaned!), Kindi Kids dolls and a series of books called “How to Draw Really Cute Things / Food” etc

NotTheGrinchAgain · 01/01/2022 21:50

Big hits last year and year before age 9 and 10:
Snuggly plush duvet cover
Box set of Malory Towers
Tin of watercolour pencils and sketch pad
Dry ski slope lessons
Selfie stick (she has an old iphone

This year age 11:
Big hit was an apple ipencil as DD loves to draw and doodle.

DialsMavis · 01/01/2022 21:55

DD is 11 and loved:Glass painting kit, candle making kit, Nintendo Switch (we don't usually do massive presents like that, so she was v shocked about that one), pull up bar Confused

PoodleKaboodle · 01/01/2022 21:58

DD is 10 and asked for and loved:

Oodie
Grinch soft toy
Cat in the hat soft toy
Slippers
Bath bombs
Squishmallow
Hot water bottle
Mug
Lots more other bits but these were her favourites.

It’s her birthday in a few weeks and the only thing she’s asked for is a new jumper and joggers.
Says she got all she wanted for Christmas.

TheOpen · 01/01/2022 21:58

DD10 loved her squishy mochis and watercolour paint pens. Also Guineas book of world records and boot slippers.

Midlifemission · 01/01/2022 21:58

Hits with my DD who is 10 were-

Oodie ( not the real brand a copy
From Amazon)
Large squish mallow
Warrior cats figures (obsessed with books so would only work for some kids !)
Minecraft Lego
Netball hoop and ball
Posca pens
Fidgets ( drive me mad !)
A scruffalov - this is nostalgia as she has had one every Christmas and didn't want to have outgrown them !
Throw throw Burrito game ( but not played yet )

foxgoosefinch · 01/01/2022 22:07

@The2Omicronnies

@The2Omicronnies The hamster was from The Entertainer at £6 each - it went down so well I ordered another one a couple of days ago (and it came by post really quickly!) They needed batteries but worked fine: www.thetoyshop.com/baby-pre-school/3-4-years/Pitter-Patter-Pets-Busy-Little-Hamster---Pastel-Rainbow-Edition/p/539486_pastel?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjuz06MeR9QIVUuztCh2isQCMEAQYAiABEgL4uvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I think we have that how do draw cute stuff book - it’s really good!

@StealthPolarBear ooh that sounds good! I think my niece might have got one of those driving lessons!

Main hit aged 11 was an Amazon Fitbit thingy and a rubber pig that poos slime

snowmanshoes · 01/01/2022 22:19

My dd is 11 soon and big hits for her we’re squishmallow/mochi/fidgets and her alcohol markers and proper drawing books

For her bday shes only asked for a pencil she can use with her iPad mini, some headphones, a mesh ball and a bucket hat

snowmanshoes · 01/01/2022 22:20

Oh yes we had throw throw burrito too (dd loved it as the burritos are squishies!!)

ffscovid · 01/01/2022 22:25

DD (11) loved her Beats headphones

liveforsummer · 01/01/2022 22:29

DD8 got a laptop so is understandably over the moon. Also yes no game, funny face game, horse theme monopoly. The rest she lives is a bit niche as based on her hobby but lots of matching clothing

The2Omicronnies · 01/01/2022 22:57

@foxgoosefinch thank you so much. She will be thrilled!

chillimice · 01/01/2022 23:06

DD turned 11 just before Xmas and loved

  • a proper desk, swivel chair, light and desk accessories
  • fluffy blankets/fluffy duvet cover/cushions
  • mini food for her dolls
  • eco make up and make up brushes
  • aromatherapy sprays
  • fluffy oodie type jumper
Becsim · 01/01/2022 23:19

My DD just turned 9 before Xmas. She loves her oodie (primary version), wireless headphones, Fitbit style watch, River Island bag, LED lights and IPad.
(Birthday and Xmas presents from us and family.)

She doesn’t play with toys anymore 😢

chillimice · 01/01/2022 23:19

Oh we got throw throw burrito too as a family present - surprisingly everyone loves it!

Northernexile · 01/01/2022 23:26

Almost 10 year old DD loved:
Next version of an Oodie
Technic Lego (she has all the HP stuff and is a real whizz so enjoyed the challenge of the Technic)
Nintendo Switch steering wheel
Funky Hype water bottle
Ninja slack line (like an assault course thing you can string up outside, they are brilliant)
Throw Throw Burrito
New earrings
In line skates
Her birthday is next month so I'm also looking for inspiration!

foxgoosefinch · 01/01/2022 23:33

I’ve never heard of Throw Throw Burrito - that sounds good!

Also I think she’d like glass making and candle making kits, squishmallows, posca pens, and a desk. (She’d probably also like a rubber pig that poos slime but I might pass on that one 🤣)

pantjog · 01/01/2022 23:36

Mine loved her unicorn purse so much she takes it to bed with her… perhaps a bit less sophisticated than her peer group!

Livefortherain · 01/01/2022 23:39

The best and most used present was a box FULL of pens, pencils, paper, card, Smiggle stuff, posca pens and Sharpies. She has used it every single day and because it's all in a box, it stays together! Probably spent around £40 on it.

Lego Friends sets
Barbies
Sew a rainbowcorn (£3 home bargains)
Mini Brands
Magnetix

CoffeeChocolateWine · 01/01/2022 23:49

My DD is 9. Biggest hits this year were…
Lego Friends magical fairground set
Ice cream maker
Hype rucksack
Harry Potter calligraphy set
Cute little polar bear and penguin mug with a ‘woolly hat’ lid and mug cake recipe book!
The hair styling head got a bit of a luke warm response when she opened it but she’s played with it LOADS since then.

Misses…
A knitting kit - slightly annoying as she has specifically asked for this for months but it hasn’t even been looked at.
A personalised rose gold necklace with her birthstone - again, asked for to replace one that she lost, but she’s been more excited by a pair of clip-on earrings from Claire’s!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 01/01/2022 23:55

Oh and a fake oodie from Dunelm! She practically lives in it!

Biscuitandacuppa · 02/01/2022 00:07

I bought a HUAWEI smart watch for my dd for her bday last year and it was a fraction of the price of a Fitbit, just as functional and my dd loves it.

Hits this Xmas we’re -
First phone
Diamond Art
Simple face products
3D jigsaws
HP jumper
How to draw really interesting stuff and a grown up pencil set.

On the list for her bday in March is a graphics tablet as she draws, edits and posts her own animated still frame videos on YouTube.

massiveblob · 02/01/2022 00:23

Age 11/12 DC & her mates
Oodie or snuggly or similar
